Inside the life of master showman P.T. Barnum

P.T. Barnum was America's most famous promoter -- and in recent years, his life has been getting a fresh look. Two years ago, there was a movie starring Hugh Jackman; this year, author Robert Wilson published a book called "Barnum, an American Life." Jeff Glor joined Wilson for a tour through Barnum’s legacy.

They tame the elephants using fear. They always have someone standing there that the elephants were afraid of to control them. I spoke to a truck driver that drove elephants for years describing how they were treated while crying silently and claiming his guilt for witnessing it and not acting

That's one of the ways people tame beasts.. Fear, reward, watching of parents etc.. Fear produces the best result but can leave the animal with high stress while reward often has a less desirable effect especially with the more aggressive animals..

Sort of. Today, we supposedly know better. Until just a few years ago, the standards of our own time were well above what they plummeted to under "it's cool to be bigoted/asinine/rude again." If we judge people today by the standards *of our own time* then a large percentage of us are shameful. We don't even have Barnum's excuse.

@@Juliet_Capulet Yeah _supposedly_ as you said. There's no balance and we are constantly looking for problems. I hope later generations will understand how unnecessary the politically correct mindset is. There are some good things it does, as anything unhealthily overdone can accomplish. However it is creating issues where there aren't issues. I think we have to be tough. I think we are focusing too much on how we talk and we should focus that energy on other things, like trying to change government.
