I lived in Dubai, then the Trucial Oman States, in 1970. On arriving in Dubai for the first time one had to walk from the airplane across the apron to the Custom Department. In those days it was a wooden shack, its changed a bit.

You cannot take any of those riches into eternity with you. You can only live in one palace at a time, drive only one car at a time and none of those things can extend one's life. My SUV takes me where I need to go. It doesn't need to be gold. I can only wonder how many precious little mouths could be fed around world with the cost of just a few of those assets. I'm glad that I can be content with such as I have.

I have always been amazed how often people put down the rich leaders of the UAE. Look where the oil money is doing in Dubai. Yes some of it goes into their pockets but rightful so but they spend a lot of oil money for infrastructure and making life better for UAE citizens. A lot of things (education- healthcare come to mind) are free are for UAE people. Tell me what amazing building or much of anything in the US the oil money has done, pretty much nothing, it goes in the oil companies pocket and never leaves. I have been to Dubai and Abu Dhabi a couple of time and love it there.

The Shah of Iran had this vision 60 years ago! Just to let you know!

what is the use of all this luxury when one dies he goes alone in the grave leaving all he has behind. do something big for those in need is a big achievement.

Well, a small clarification to my previous comment on smartness of the investment of the Al-Maktoum ruler: its a bit risky to pay 500 million dollars of one beautiful race horse. But apparently that investment was also a success. Its bit too EXTRA or too extravagant to golden your car. In case you plan to drive it in public. But when money is not an issue, who cares. I don't. Lets hope that they live happy life. And the future is brighter, not only for them.

Well, the Al-Maktoum family has used wisely their money. 🕌🏝️. One must respect how they have established all that, and more outside Dubai, by well thought investments. Very smart people. Outsmarted many of their competitors. Time will show how well they adopt themselves to the time after oil as key source of energy. Being smart they are, one can't doubt that either. Sheik Hamdan is atm a educated, sporty playboy. He surely growns up to the standards expected for the Ruler. Dubai as tourism destination sounds and looks bit plastic and artificial. But the succes shows that maybe my analysis is bit wrong. Well, originality is rare element in today's turism biz. Or can one say, that Disney World feels autentic? Nope. Either not.
