Inside STARGATE SG-1's Original Pilot Script: 9 Changes from Script to Screen

Ойын-сауық

GateWorld has unearthed the original, first-draft script for "Children of the Gods" - the 2-hour premiere movie for STARGATE SG-1! The finished episode aired in July of 1997, launching the television franchise that would span more than 350 episodes. But plenty of things changed between Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner's original script and the final episode.
Here we're running down 9 big changes (plus 11 more small ones) - from the name of the Big Bad, to the Stargate's iris, to a scrapped fight scene inside the prison on Chulak, to Lt. Kawalsky's final fate. One main character from the show even got a change in name and rank before SG-1 premiered.
You can read all the script excerpts and analysis at the link below!

The 1994 film is not canon to the series, it stands alone, the series version of the 1994 film played out differently, and there are various differences between the two. I know they've been saying it for a long time, but ... it's coming back. It may have better funding, if it becomes a Disney property. And that would mean, General Jack O'Neill is a Disney Princess. ... that's how that works, right? :) That could explain part of the delay, as they have considered it a profit making franchise, but adding to it would be expensive. The whole world of who owns what properties, and how they decide to monetize them, is rather complex. Dumping money into things that are about to be sold aren't a great idea. But dumping money into a previously successful franchise that you just bought, is a great idea.

My headcannon always assumed that Kurt Russels O'Neil used to be more of a jokester like Richard Dean Andersons "O'Neill" was, but since the movie begins with his kid having died not long ago, maybe just a few months or hell even weeks, he was still grieving for him. We saw that in the movie when the Airforce guys show up to tell him he's reinstated that he was virtually suicidal. Heck, he was choosen for the assignment due to the fact that he WAS suicidal. He'd have no problem blowing himself and the others up with the nuke they brought with them if shit went down. But he slowly changes throughout the movie, he bonds with Skaara etc and regains his "will" to live again. So by the time we see Richard Dean Anderson play Jack "O'Neill" a ´couple of years later, he has moved on (of course he misses his son and still is hurt by that, but he has moved on) he's back as "himself".

Honestly, I wouldn't mind the Goa'uld hand device being able to open Stargates. I mean, that scene in the pilot makes way more sense that way, and it could have strengthened why the Goa'ulds are perceived as gods, not to mention did the Asgard, the Nox, and even future Cassandra have that exact same technology.

in the alternate reality movie continuum teal'c uses an device that he attaches to the gate that not only dials the gate it also provides power to the gate for the dialing process. as if this tech was normal to the gould. we can assume that Apophis had this tech from the beginning of the pilot and we the viewer just never saw the device being used up until this point. or at least this is how i imagine it happened in my head.

@ken parvu i'm not saying it has to be an big change, like the example i was thinking was someone discovers how to fix the asgard DNA issues, but they need to go back in time to warn the asgard of what not to do when it comes to cloning themselves, perhaps they don't need to physically go back in time to send this message, but this idea would require them to understand the asgard history before they attempt such a message. but your right, it could change history so much that it could cause the asgard to not ever meet the tauri and who knows, they may not end up dealing with the replicators or the Ori. obviously we wouldn't want this, the puddle jumper could only time travel as little as 500 years back in time. so maybe this would be a bad idea, unless they figured out how the time needed to an even lesser time into the past. i'm just sad they had to die, they searched and searched for an cure to their cloning dilemma and never could figure it out, and then the obvious threat of the Ori being yet another issue along with the replicators.

I actually really liked some of the original plot points. Like kewalski not getting taken over by the symbiote, as I really would’ve liked to have seen more of him. Or the hand device being able to open the gate, as it would enforce the image of the Go’ould having “divine powers” that could open pathways to the heaven and hells of the various people they rule over. And how tealc betrayed Apophis (I don’t care for the apep name). And more variety in the set locations would’ve been nice. I know they had limits but I’d love to have seen some worlds that weren’t obviously filmed in Canada or a set.

@@paulcoy9060 i agree, but i wasn't talking about that aspect of the conversation, i was talking about the fact that the network essentially coerced the show writers into showing nudity, even though they didn't want nudity in the show. eventually they came down to an arrangement to only show nudity for the pilot. but the show has been coerced into other things as well when they were bribed to put certain aspects within the show as a permanent role. however, back then it was more subtle than it is nowadays. where nowadays it's pretty much forced into shows where no negotiation's take place. and the same thing is going to happen to the new stargate because Amazon bought the rights. so i don't know if i look forward to the shit show they are likely to bring, i'm sure the show will have all the nice special visual effects like it were a movie, but writing direction will be significantly fucked and will damage the show's integrity into the future if they decide to take it too far with political nonsense of today.

So I was able to watch and I remember the nude scene. I was but only 16 at the time. It being one of the very first tv shows to air on a premium cable channel of course there would be nudity but sadly that was the only episode that had any. It was many many years later when it was in sidication I was able to watch anymore of the show. Of course I have since owned all the seasons and watched them all through multiple times. In fact I am currently midway through season 5 rewatching since the new bluray of the series was released.

Good question! As best we can tell from the show, when building out the mythology of multiple gate addresses (which needed to be corrected for millennia of planetary drift) the writers decided that the Abydos address worked in the original movie because it is relatively close to us in space -- so less affected by eons of drift. That, and they wanted to tell a story that was largely centered in a single galaxy. That way when you send someone outside our galaxy, or bring in the Asgard on a rare basis, it's more of a special event.

Not that I've heard officially from Wright or Glassner. I suspect that "Sha'uri" was changed because they knew they were going to have multiple actors saying it a lot, and it was just hard (cf. how RDA has always says "Goold"). For "Tyler O'Neill," my guess is that TPTB may not have noticed the detail of the certificate in the bedroom scene.

The change to how Teal'c reneges alone makes the final script the better version. I like a few of the original ideas, but I prefer most of the changes. I'm thankful they made Carter more palatable. Back when I first watched the series as a lad, it didn't bother me when Carter brings her "reproductive organs." But just remembering that line, nowadays... gets me rolling the old photoreceptors. Not to blame the show's writers for today's drivel, but it does make re-watching my favorite show bittersweet, at least for a moment. I dearly hope a new Stargate show or movie isn't made. Not for the time being. The first good Stargate video game could be possible, however. Star Wars' got a lot of great games (none recent), even Star Trek has the Elite Force games which I thought were pretty good. Stargate, on the other hand, has zilch worth mentioning, despite boasting such a great premise for video games of multiple genres.

Background: Apparently most actors from the original movie knew that Emmerich and Devlin had their own plans for the franchise and weren't happy about the TV series, so refused to join the show. John Diehl (Kawalski) was apparently one of the few who agreed to help kick off the show, but wanted to be written out. When he later realized Emmerich and Devlin weren't on board, and pulled out, it was too late to keep Kawalski. I think Wright (or another writer/producer involved?) mentioned in an interview that they were very sad because they would have kept Acovone if they'd had time, because he was so good in the role.

It is hard to believe it has been twenty-three years! I was 'Anquietas' on your website around when it first launched. As much as I would love to see Stargate come back, I fear that in the present woke climate, it would be a disaster. I pitched an idea to Wright years ago, titled 'Stargate: Ancients', set in the time of the Ancients alliances in the Milky Way and the establishment of the SG network, but nothing came from this as MGM were dead-set in doing nothing with the property. I think that SG Origins with Catherine might have come out of that concept, but it was clearly not what I had in mind. I no longer write for any television or film production; or frankly for any paid source, because the editorial staff for almost everyone is under the heel of people that hold ideologies that conflict with me own. I want to tell stories, not push propaganda. It's a sad time in life when you have good stories to tell, but your stories do not tick enough boxes to be told.

  • @GateWorldDotNet

    @GateWorldDotNet

    3 жыл бұрын

Glad you're here! Some version of "Stargate: Ancients" has been ubiquitous in fandom as a story idea, I think because it's such a deep and interesting aspect of the franchise's mythology. I loved that opening scene with the old Alterans at the start of "The Ark of Truth," and would love to see a show / movie / miniseries set after they arrived in the Milky Way. That said, I think Brad is always going to be opposed to it. He regularly reiterates that in his view part of what makes Stargate what it is is the present-day setting -- that "it's us," trying to find our way in the universe. Stargate would have to take a major pivot (perhaps akin to Star Wars telling stories outside the Skywalker saga) before we'll get those kinds of stories.

I was always a bit disappointed that SG-1 never made any more of the "goa'uld spies within our midst" angle on the show. That was such a missed opportunity. Also, after we got the Tok'ra and it was no longer "all Goa'uld are evil", there would have been a great opportunity to explore Goa'uld society and show us what it means to grow up a Goa'uld by maybe having a spy redeem themselves. They did a little of that with the Ashrak early on, and later with Ki'ana (but it never got enough screen time to feel like a natural progression for her), and Yu proved there were honorable Goa'uld, but they could have done so much here. If they ever reboot Stargate SG-1, I hope they choose to go for more of the plots they never explored, interspersed with familiar plotlines as the over-arching story arc.

A reboot would be detrimental but it would be interesting to see more modern/mature/intimidating Goa'ulds. They where ridiculous in the show, perhaps excluding Ba'al who admits pretty early on that posing for gods is only a tool and a pretty stupid one. I have no real problem whith that given it was a late 90' series and that O'Neill repeatedly pointed out how over the top they acted. But now, we could afford to have more grounded, deep and violent antagonists. Ra, in the movie, was intimidating as hell despite looking like a young boy and I think Klorel managed to almost pull this off. I really hoped that he would be the arch enemy but he never was. Maybe the Goa'uld Apophis could have transfered to skaara body? IDK, for me, Apophis was a maniered angry chihuahua pouting bitch and absolutely not a powerful Godlike figure as the show wanted everyone to believe. Not to mention Osiris with his halloween costume and this one other pale goa'uld guy who got easily destroyed by healed apophis.
