One thing the BBC didn't mention is The P.M. stopping farmers from using fertiziler immediately on their crops. This was the real nail in the coffin economically for Sri Lanka. The country used to grow enough crops to feed itself but now with a ban of fertilizer they are only growing half the amount of crops than normal and there is not enough food to feed the population.

Seems like that's outside of the scope of the report. It's clearly intended as a general overview of the situation. They interview multiple people who mention the corruption and mismanagement of the government, so it's not like they entirely gloss that over, they just don't go into specific detail as what that mismanagement involved because it's not particularly relevant to an international audience who doesn't live in Sri Lanka. You can easily go look up the specifics if you're so inclined. I wouldn't call this bias, except in the sense that the report is clearly aimed at people who aren't actually living in Sri Lanka.

For example, China and Russia vetoed against UN security council proposals against Sri Lanka that were brought in by the likes of Briton and US. China provided Sri Lanka with required military aid and funding to end the war with the terrorist organisation called LTTE. China always provided required funds for the development of the nation. They never hesitated when asked. It was Sri Lankan piliticians and high officials who pocketed the bulk of the funds and used the rest on useless mega projects like the Maththala international airport. China was never a reason for the current situation in the country. If the Chinese and other funds were used properly for the past couple of decades, Sri Lanka wouldn't be still called as a developing country.

I feel sorry for the Sri Lankan people. Hopefully you get through this. From Bangalore, Karnataka, India. 🇮🇳❤️🇱🇰

I am sad the fertilizer import ban was only covered for 30 seconds. In Sri Lanka, just over 1/4th of the population works in agriculture. That's compared to less than 1% in the United States. When your government is dumb enough to ban fertilizer imports, and massively decrease crop yields, things are going to get very ugly! And that's before the debt, tourism drop, and food and energy prices skyrocketed.

@@jirachi-wishmaker9242 In most cases organic farming is worse for the environment, and produces lower nutrition quality foods than modern farming. Or it requires an unreasonable amount of labour.

I live in Sri Lanka, so I'm really sad to see my mom struggle everyday to give me and my brother's 3 meals a day, going to work walking halfway and back because there are less busses and the once that are running are jam packed 😓😓, some of my friends hardly get 2 meals a day, some get non at all. the only thing I can do is pray, if you can give a small prayer for all of us it would be a big help ✨✨✨

in sl news several people have said about not having 3 meals daily . look at europe and other so called rich western countries where many cant afford 3 daily either even 1 or 2 with some people . personally i dont think 3 is necessary . the people are struggling badly too and many have sold their cars because they cant pay for fuel insurance etc nor for many other things . times are very tough for non wealthy people everywhere . there are plenty of stories on here yt .

So sorry to see the suffering being inflicted on the people of Sri Lanka. I lived there for 3 and a half years from 1979 to 1983. I was a student there studying accountancy (CIMA) .i could not have chosen a better place to go . The SriLankan people are some of the best people i have ever seen. I have been to about 40 countries and that says a lot. When as a student i got broke there were always kind people to help me out. My prayers are just that they get out of this terrible situation and live better lives.

That's a poor example, because rabies is really very rare these days. It's a danger of least concern, because it's just not very likely to happen. Sri Lanka is not one of the countries to have managed to eradicate the disease completely, but still it's not common at all.

In March 2020, the IMF told the Rajapaksa regime that Sri-Lanka’s debt was unsustainable. The IMF did a debt sustainability analysis and came to a conclusion that the debt was not sustainable for the next five years. The regime ignored the warning from the IMF! In Sep 2021, the regime appointed Ajith Nivard Cabraal as the central bank governor. Cabraal repeatedly claimed that there was no need for an IMF bailout! Sri-Lanka has asked the IMF for bailout 16 times in the last 52 years. This shows that Sri-Lanka has been an economic basket case for the last 50 plus years. However, the Rajapaksa regime has comically claimed that going to the IMF would damage the sovereignty of the country and wasted two years in seeking an IMF bailout. Now, after bankrupting the country, the regime is asking the IMF to speed up the bailout! In 1950, one US dollar bought Rs 5. When Gotabaya Rajapaksa was elected in November 2019, one US dollar bought Rs 180. Now, one US dollar can buy more than Rs 360. The Rajapaksa regime is probably the most incompetent regime in the world!

Australia is giving Sri Lanka fifty million dollars and so are other nations. With the corruption by the family running the country and their henchmen I wonder how much will go into their pockets!! These corrupt individuals have been bleeding this unfortunate country for years. Just check their assets : luxury hotels in Dubai and other such places for instance. And now even with the so called Emergency in place the wives and children of these corrupt individuals have fled under cover of darkness to their mansions overseas. India, UK and US have been propping up the Rajapaksa regime and the previous Sri-Lankan regimes despite knowing their records of corruption and violence! Mahinda Rajapaksa stole money from the Tsunami Aid funds. You can check online for “Helping Hambantota”. The Commonwealth gave Mahinda Rajapaksa the honor to host the Commonwealth Summit in 2013, despite credible allegations of war crime against the Rajapaksa regime. Instead of liquidating rogue regimes, the West wants to nurture them! Just over two years ago, the vast majority of Sinhalese voted for the Rajapaksa brothers knowing their records of corruption and violence, when they were in power from 2005 to 2015. The Rajapaksa brothers were elected primarily because of Sinhala ethno-nationalism. So, the Sinhalese have no right to complain now! It is worth noting that every government since 1948 (except the first government of Ceylon) left office under an economic and/or political crisis! So, Sri-Lanka’s future will be bleak!

I heard that part of the problem is that Sri Lanka has gone organic and since pesticides aren't used any more there is much less produce... Is that just a rumor?

My goodness what happen to Sri Lanka

For the last 2 years, it lost about 10 B USD from Tourism and Worker Remittances due to the Covid. it was a big hit to its foreign reserve(7.5 B USD) in front of the loss of its access to the international commercial credit market. So, this resulted in a dollar shortage, and now working with IMF and other international assistance to get rid of this.

Cabbage is still about 1/3 less in Sri Lanka than the US. Yes it used to be cheaper, but is still cheap. Inflation is the measure of change, not a level.

Fellow other countries , if you're listening from where ever you are... Just if you can help people of Sri Lanka. Send chemical fertilisers for farmers ( directly to the farmers ) and fuel. Forgive me if you find these words of mine as Dumb words. Just help the people you can. I'm not a hater. If you cannot help each other with other countries. I guess , there won't be a world to live anymore.

I don't understand this world. Why we can't even distribute free food and medicine throughout the world? It's basic!

Reports say the stolen amount by the ruling family is closed to 30 billion dollars and most of the stolen money is invested in developed countries. So technically the west is also responsible for srilanka's economic downfall. Most developed countries never check where the money is from. Like London to the Russian Oligarchs.

Sri Lanka's economic crisis ???? Have the BBC noticed that there is an economic crisis in the UK. Probably not, as they are not subject to economic forces, people are forced to pay their "licence fee"

How? No gas, no electricity and more importantly no petrol. Constant protests and chaos in the street. No tourist would love to travel in this type of situation.

Sri Lankan here. There was no effort to go "green". govt made it up after looting the country dry to cover up the lack of Dollars to import fertilizer.

Dear International community, We need your help. Our people are dying in fuel queues, a teenager died 2 days ago because he was bit by a snake and the hospital didnt have anti-venom, kids cant face exams because there is no paper to print exam papers, farmers cant farm because there is no fertilizer, there is no milk to feed young kids. People are contemplating suicide and some have already taken thier own lives. And to the government the suffering of the people are a joke. We need your help. Visit us help bring in foreign revenue because we need it as the day when the majority of Lankans start commiting suicide in droves is not far away. 😞
