Inside Meta's open source A.I. program

As artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, the companies developing it are largely keeping their technology closely guarded. An exception is Meta, the owner of Facebook, which is emphasizing open sourcing in development. Yann LeCun, a Meta developer and one of the "Godfathers of A.I.," said such work is necessary. Years before generative AI rush took off Britain was called out for building AI controlled fighters for RAF, Russia has autonomous AI targeting systems in some tanks and we don't even know what US and China have done with AI. If its public we'll atleast know if something goes wrong. There could be some regulation, but we all know those only favours the billionaires

Powerful open-source is just a stupid thought, even if there's only 1 (from the 8 billion) individual with bad intentions and a few GPU's the world could come to an end...

    I use many of these tools for research and I was kind of blown over to realize they were developed at meta of all places. I think of meta as a data vacuum have they changed their ways?

    Facebook got into a lot of trouble because once everyone created a Facebook profile... nobody wanted to use it anymore. So they took all the money they made from selling people out to advertising, and went fully into the future with artificial task generation and into the 3-D workspace... tbh, it's a long shot into the dark... and there may potentially be a lot... or absolutely nothing there...

    The chances that these AI revolutionaries who are mostly Libertarians are ever going to share their profits with the little people through UBI are almost zero. And IF it would ever happen, there is zero doubt that those receiving it would have to submit to constant surveillance regarding their actions, what they buy, et al ad nauseum.

    I would think twice regarding any high authority take on new technology such as generative AI. The problem isn’t AI dictatorship, but institutional fear of losing prescriptive and regulatory speech under this new creative outbreak. I am sure that generative AI empowers people to a degree inconceivable before.

    Love or hate Meta, they've had the most success with open-source AI. I still think a DAO AI is the ultimate AI, but OS is better than closed that's for sure.

    I’ve had the privilege of having a long personal chat with LeCun recently, he doesn’t worry about the big picture because he’s very well aware of the shortcomings of AI. We are many years away of any kind of AI threat. It’s a great productivity tool for people who are able to use it.

    @@raybod1775 "Any kind of AI threat"? Any? It's already that. Here's the thing: When you consult LeCun, it's like consulting a committee of one that proclaims its opinions are unanimous. In reality there is no good reason to automatically give him the last word on the subject. Do your homework. There are top AI experts of equal or greater stature who ARE concerned.

    Anytime something is made open source, I respect the creator. Its smart, and every company should do this if they were moral, but they would be made uncompetitive. I think meta just shot themseves in the foot to help the global community.

    every inventor would necessarily have to develop things that serve to benefit the prosperity of individuals everywhere if there were no idiotic governments enforcing 'intellectual property" laws. Insuline would be a cheap as aspirin. And people wouldn't have to give their organs and tissues for free, they could actually benefit by selling them, instead of the insurance companies harvesting the organs for free and selling them at a profit (this is real).
