Inside look at how school bus drivers are trained for dangerous situations

A number of crashes in the past year have involved school buses in the Brazos Valley. While these crashes have been relatively minor, with mild if any injuries, the incidents do highlight the need for proper training of school bus drivers.
Much of that training is based at the Texas A&M Engineering Extension, or TEEX. Hector Silva serves as an instructor in that TEEX program as well as the College Station ISD director of transportation.
Silva says Texas has some of the most- and best-trained drivers in the country.
"They go through school's training to get their CDL, then the state also requires a 20-hour course that the person has to go through," said Silva. "After that, every three years they have to go through a re-certification course."
Silva demonstrated specific maneuvers that school bus drivers are taught, See the video player above for the full demo.
"A lot of the accidents that happen on school buses don't usually happen when the bus is going forward; it's going backwards and turning," Silva said. "So we focus our training on that."

Usually when someone is doing an interview that involves a demonstration it’s a boss or supervisor who has never performed these tasks a day in their life and they bring someone else in to perform the demonstration, and the person being interviewed just gives a play by play. The fact that he’s actually PERFORMING the demonstration while doing the interview is very impressive.

We are told to NEVER back up without a spotter and to use the amber alternating lights and horn. The first and last word in driving a school bus is SAFETY in any maneuver you have to do.

In my state it is illegal to use the alternating ambers anytime except when approaching a designated stop. Plus I have about 5 turn arounds on each of my routes, so having a spotter for me is pretty much out of the question lol

never swing your bus like that while backing up, the tailspin alone could cause problems, and never reverse at tracks unless cop, fire or r/r police tell you to do so. even then you're still at fault for any collisions.

@@youtubevlogproductions1567 all busses built after 2000 I believe must have back up alarms on them. Even so people will still have accidents with then on. They always claim they didn't hear the alarm. During the pretrip you're required to check the backup alarm. If it don't work you write up the bus and take another one.

I got to agree with you on that. I'm not a bus driver but If I was behind a bus that did that I would surely be worried and that alone would make me either back up myself or try to get out of the way and could cause an accident in itself.

Outstand video presenting the proper way all states should certify/train "Trainers". Unfortunately not all states require that a trainer has recieved advanced training and certified by the state. 2 year recertification is a must! I have first hand knowledge "and witnessed" this: Who wants to train? Okay go train a prospective student Joe/Jane! Although the driver may be a very good school bus driver but without advanced training how to "teach/instruct" with NO standardize curriculum is a formula for eventual disaster. Furthermore "real world" training should be included when training a new student especially on rural routes, narrow roads, gravel, sharp turns, water etc. A real world example would be: It is raining, in the dark (AM/PM) a tree has fallen across a narrow road. You need to train/teach the driver, what options do I have here? Can I go around it? No culverts and mud. Are there any driveways I can use to turn around? No. The road is too narrow to turn around! Although we try to avoid backing up at times you have no other choice. The new driver needs to be instructed to analyze ALL options available. This but one of many real world scenarios that a bus driver may encounter. Remember you are responsible for the safety of the students on your bus. I am a proponent of State Trainer Certification.

we reverse and turn all the time, not a big deal usually if it's just at a stop designed to do that. besides, you obviously don't know how buses are laid-out, we're not all these third party bus companies tracking our every inch with GPS and have these cumbersome and unnecessary screens jammed in our faces. to install that would be a massive expense with almost literally zero benefits, at least for my school.

@@ryanbarker5217 I drive one. There is a route or two where it is narrow and passing selection is limited. If you're unlucky, you have to reverse back and possibly into a junction going downhill. The driving test has an off-road section where you must reverse into a box without internal aids other than the driver's eyes and any mirrors. No screens or anything.

@@forevercomputing that's unfortunately route planning. yeah, we have off-set parking on our test, too. we don't have all that fancy crap, either, we don't even have AC in our old buses. if there's a very specific case where you would need a rearview camera, okay, but that's far from the norm.

Totally understand your concern. We filmed this at the RELLIS campus. The location was first called the Bryan Army Air Field in response to the U.S.‘s entry into World War II. During just over two years of wartime service as an Advanced Flying School, the post specialized in developing instrument-only flight training. At war’s end, the field was deactivated. The runways are still there to this day and are used for multiple uses such as crash testing and driving courses for law enforcemeny.

i don't understand recertification for active drivers any more than i do registering the same car every year. in my experience, the 'classroom' consisted of a woman who drove a bus for maybe six months and pretends she's one of us, then we're tortured into listening to four days of inane bullshit, her personal stories, some political views thrown in, and there's a dumb test at the end. literally everything of any value could be done in one day in a couple of hours.
