*IMPORTANT* Hey guys, setting my usual sarcasm aside for once I hope you’re all safe right now. Like a lot of the documentary style videos on this channel, this video was filmed many weeks before its release. We shot this long before the Tokyo lockdown; as I mentioned in last week’s video, for several weeks now I’ve been self isolating in my apartment with a stash of cup noodles, where I’ll be staying for the rest of April (and likely beyond at this point). I considered postponing this video given it’s set outdoors, but I figured anything that provides an escape from the ongoing situation can only be a good thing (especially given how hilarious Ryotaro was in this episode with his love of “different air”). I was wondering if anyone else was going to mention this!I hope they told the other people on the train that they were going to be filming. I noticed that at least one of the other people at the back of the train had their face blurred out, as Japanese people are usually very touchy about being filmed without permission. Not to mention how taboo it is to disturb others around you, especially on a train. I would really like to hear what Chris has to say about this experience

Another impressive thing is the salarymen that come in there for a quick bowl between meetings or on their way to work. They basically inhale that bowl just as quick as they make them..

I'm a Japanese and I went to Spain and found that they have a great bullet express train there as fast and smooth as Shinkansen. Then I found out the logos "Hitachi" are written on the body of the Spanish bullet train. So, it was made in Japan

That's not the fastest trains, at least in commercial speed. Fastest trains in Japan, run at 320Km/h in Japan, in France, Morocco and China, fastest trains run at 350 Km/h. Both

Rather than taking premium seat on the Shinkansen, I recommend staying at a better hotel at your destination or spending more luxurious dinner. The Shinkansen is comfortable even in economy class, and the ride time is VERY short anyway.

This. I took the economy class Shinkansen on my first trip - just to say I'd taken it - it's already very comfortable, and yeah, for a journey that doesn't even take two hours, you really don't need the luxury. The price of the first class tickets is enough to upgrade you from two days in a cheapass business hotel room to a moderately fancy ryokan with hot springs, sashimi and wagyu beef for dinner, and all that good stuff. Between two nights' worth of luxury and two hours, I know what I'd pick.

@@notatallheng fair point, but don’t diss the green car seats, I have ridden both Green car and economy, Green car was quite the upgrade and didn’t even cost more as it was a hayatoku green ticket (it was either that or paying for a conventional reservation that costed more...) That got me from Odawara (I live in western Kanagawa) to Shin-Osaka in style for not that much money, with plenty of space for my dog in a carrier.

@@a76101 some languages more than others. English is pretty simple once you throw logic out the window and adopt the "it is that way because [insert] said so" mentality. My native language (Dutch) is easy to learn thanks to our relative low amount of exceptions to the rules, but hard to master because of our hard G's and rolling R's. I can't fathom learning Chinese or advanced Japanese in a spoken manner, let alone writing. TL;DR: Every language has it's ups and downs. Don't be afraid to try and learn.

I lived in Japan for 2 years, and my (now ex) wife and i traveled on the shinkansen a few times. She did it more often as she traveled for work. We didn't get to try Granclass, but we did travel in the Green cars on both our main trips. Really enjoyed being on them. =)

I rode a bullet train over a decade ago on a trip to Japan when I was 16. Growing up in New York I was used to noisy dirty slow trains. The bullet train was amazing.

The most unexplainable thing is: how the hell one eats noodles wearing a white turtleneck!??? We have a confirmation that Riotaro is a wizard.

haha... most of Japanese people can do that. We study how to eat noodles from young ages but for Curry Udon, I pretty care about the spitting of the brown soup to my white T-shirt or tie as a business man. if I speak seriously, when you eat that kind of noodles your mouth should be near to the bowl and guide smoothly with your chopsticks not to dance the noodles between the bowl and mouth. that's how we do that.

This was the most recent video that had been uploaded when I discovered this channel, hard to believe that was only a year ago. It feels like I've seen every video on both channels multiple times in that time and it's amazing how quickly Abroad in Japan became one of my favourite things to watch, I'm so grateful for the humor and escapism that only this channel can provide :)

Martin Brundle used to enjoy riding on the Shinkansen when he was an active F1 driver!

One thing everyone should know about the Welcome Suica is that (unlike with normal Suica) you cannot refund the remaining charge in it. So be sure to spend all of the charge in it, as you cannot use the card on your next Japan trip due to the card being valid only for 28 days.

Last time I missed buying the welcome suica, because the ticket office at the airport was already closed at the time of my departure. I'm collecting all the IC cards from across Japan. Only 2 from Fukuoka left (forgot to buy them, even I went there three times xD)

But the problem isn't just the government and corrupt people, it is people itself and their culture, and those are things that won't change in well over 100 years. One day when the human race evolve a bit more perhaps. Japanese culture is a culture of the future.

Keep in mind that in 1942 when Japan attacked the U.S. they were industrially one of the most advanced countries in the world. Moreover, their infrastructure wasn't as devastated as Europe. I would say South Korea took a bigger leap forward.

As a tourist who've visited Japan in 2019, I can't recommend the JR Pass enough. Be warned however, if you buy it in advance, YOU MUST BRING THE ORIGINAL VOUCHER WITH YOU. There will be no reprints and no acceptance of copies or digital versions. You've lost or forgotten it? Tough love sunshine, buy another one. So, talking from experience: while you may save a bit by buying it in advance, my advice would be to buy it in-situ at a train station. It may save you a massive headache.

You can not buy the JR Pass in Japan. You have to order it in your home country, and bring it with you.

Hmm, actually, the JR pass is like a cheat code mainly for those who take the Shinkansen.. It's not that worthwhile if you only hang around within a city like Tokyo or Osaka. The JR pass is (obviously) only for JR trains (but not the faster Shinkansen trains), and not all JR buses and ferries. It is not valid for most private trains and subways that are found in the major metropolitan areas. Sticking JR only within Tokyo can make intra-city travelling rather painful.

Looks nice, not sure anything qualifies as 'complimentary' when you have spanked $700+ on a ticket tho lol

Now you say that, Last time i visited Japan, years ago a guy that looked a lot like Ryotaro asked us how we were enjoying our trip and where we we staying as in area, I thought he looked familiar! Awesome guy!

5:23 i thought it will be a boring 45 minute wait at Mihara station, until a bullet train just woosh and all my senses are awake. I never thought that something as mundane as train passing could be so fun in japan.

Ryotoro reminds me of my father! I absolutely love videos with him in it. I hope to be able to join the JET program within the next two years as soon as i finish my degree. I want to meet him.

The JR pass is how I traveled all over Japan, up the east coast and down the west coast, and everywhere in-between. It was well worth it. I will buy it again.

I've been to Japan over a dozen times as my grandmother lives in Sendai. This past October I went back to Japan and made the journey from Sendai to Tokyo and back a few times. No matter how many times I ride the Shinkansen, I can never get over how fast and smooth it is. You never feel yourself accelerating, no bumps, just gentle swaying when going around bends. You just look out the window and next thing you know, you're gracefully traveling at 200mph. It's truly a technological marvel. Thanks for the vid and honestly while I was visiting, I was hoping to run into to you.

I love how when Ryotaro reacts to the arrival of the return train, the woman behind them just cracks up.
