Inside An Invisible Home Built Entirely Of Glass (House Tour)

Ойын-сауық

A highly minimalist, almost invisible home, The Invisible House reflects the natural beauty and art of the desert landscape.
A 1,680-square-metre, three-bedroom, four-bathroom invisible home cantilevered 30 metres off the ground, Invisible House is the innovative and imaginative collaboration between film producers and owners Chris and Roberta Hanley and architect Tomas Osinski.
The invisible home is located on 36 hectares of land in Joshua Tree National Park and features a mirrored exterior to reflect the ever-changing landscape and create a dialogue between object and site. “We were drawn to the desert of Joshua Tree. We would always come out here, we see it as an escape,” says Chris. “We were looking for a place with rocks … and then we just had to pull it together and do it,” says Roberta.
After exploring the site, Chris and Roberta’s vision for the invisible home was quickly conceived. As filmmakers and creatives, their intention was to create, approaching the house as an art object and a space to facilitate entertainment, creativity and contemplation. They were inspired by their interest in large-scale projects with minimalist design, a vast network of artists and a passion for architecture.
Once inside the Airbnb guesthouse there are solar and thermal systems, 68-square-metre projection wall, large kitchen and a 30-metre indoor solar pool. “We drew on the idea of the pool as an ecosystem so there would be more moisture and you wouldn't dry out here and used glass walls on both sides of the pool.” says Roberta, “it’s a living room, we put the pool in the living room. Why would you break it up?”
The home is a measured response to the landscape, which is constantly changing depending on the time of day or season. In the morning, as the light changes, the home filters UV and infrared light so that it appears black yet takes on an orange-golden glow inside. “For me, the surprise was at the night-time. The lighting art pieces that Chris made - horizontal beams of colour light and vertical ones in the corners - mean that, between the refracting light at night, you just see the colours … you have this sense of it almost being a theatre,” says Roberta.
Sustainability has been incorporated into all aspects of the architecture. As well as a small environmental footprint due to the property being cantilevered, LEED and EPD-certified elements feature throughout, including a fully Solarcool glass exterior with reflective and refractive light filtering, a Sunpower 32.4kW system with a smart app system, a solar thermal system for electrics, pool and hot water, an energy-efficient and eco-friendly foam roof, and flooring insulation.
A home that doubles as a piece of art, Invisible House is a response to the site and the people who walk through its doors - forever evolving.

Yes, the house is so invisible that the birds will die flying against all that glass...EDIT- To the ones claiming there are no birds in this particular habitat, I invite you to search and read an article from Nature Blog Network that starts: "Joshua Tree National Park boasts an impressive variety of bird species..." There are over 340 different bird species recorded in this Park. Plus bats ;)

The exterior is interesting but the inside is so cold in character. Particularly at night, I couldn’t relax at all with the exposed blue lighting & exposed ceiling. I suppose such a characterless interior puts the emphasis on the landscape but I think you could take cues from the landscape & not distract from it.

Love this - it's a liveable sculpture. I have seen videos on it before but don't tire of it. I understand the criticisms that see it as a modern blemish on the setting but any architecture in that landscape is going to draw the eye and I I find it is less of an intrusion than an adobe or wooden structure would be, ultimately. It gives the surroundings back to themselves.

It’s very concerning that the architect didn’t consider the impact that this building’s external finish would have on the potential death of bird life given it is made of a mirrored glass material . For this reason, l view this design as not at appropriate for it’s location. 😢

I think that the outside looks stunning (except for the birds as 100 other commenters said) but the inside is drab and office-like. I hate the pool idea. Desert climate should allow for an outdoor pool and outdoor areas. I get how the house would stop being slick, but it will become far more livable. though I totally see how the clients might not even be awake for most of the day and party all night long :)

I really didn't expect to enjoy this one as much as I did, but the narration from the artists' definitely drew me in. It seemed so plain and boring at first, I've never imagined I would enjoy living in a desert. But the connection to nature to experience from within this space I'm sure is so enlivening. Unfortunate about the potential of birds running into it. I hope that doesn't happen to be the case.

While all those rocks are very impressive the whole property is barren and lifeless so a lifeless glass house works perfectly in this environment. You can never judge a house's worth until you actually live in it. I'd love to hear a report from the occupants.

For all those bird lovers, which I am, you need a lot of trees for birds to nest in. I don't see one tree. I don't know to many birds that nest in rocks on the ground.

  • @helenan7368

Fist of all, there're birds that don't nest in trees (yes, some of them even nest on the ground) found in several habitats all over the world. Secondly, you don't need trees near by to have birds flying around looking for food. I'm sure they can find lots of insects, small lizards and rodents in that rocky habitat. Unless, of course, they smash themselves against all that glass first... EDIT- an article about this particular habitat (JTNP) from Nature Blog Network that starts "Joshua Tree National Park boasts an impressive variety of bird species..." I invite you, as a fellow bird lover, to search and read it.

"The big discovery was not to furnish it." Is this a parody video? The Local Project has some awesome content, but can get a little pretentious sometimes. And this one knocks it out of the park. The bird-trap that gets totally overlooked (see other comments). The wayward characters with their otherworldly, almost AI like presence. The out-of-place angular structure as if it was just there one day. The colourless interior as uninhabitable as the rocky landscape. It's just one chuckle after the other, but I don't think it's meant as such?
