Inside ALS: The neurons behind the disease

Ғылым және технология

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder that mainly affects the nerve cells (neurons), which control muscle movement. As the motor neurons degenerate, they stop sending signals to the muscles, causing progressive muscle weakness and - ultimately - death. This animation focuses on the mechanisms within the motor neurons that cause them to degenerate. By understanding these mechanisms, researchers hope to one day find a cure for ALS.

A rare gene produces the Valosin Protein Disease which can be responsible for Paget's disease ( the bone disease) ALS (MND) Parkinson's and certain types of dementia which is why a variety of these diseases can be found in families where the rare gene is inherited. It might be possible to slow down this degeneration of cells by certain supplements which boost glutathione which is necessary for regeneration of cells involved in tissue building and repair, hopefully scientists will do more research in this area.
