Inside Adam Savage's Cave: The Rocketeer Rocket Pack
Ғылым және технология
Adam Savage shows off the progress of the Rocketeer jetpack he's currently building. We discuss how he's weathering the rocket engines to get the right look of discolored metal and a cool trick to illuminate the bottom of the pack.

Holy crap this is almost 10 years old and they both look damn near the same still…
As a former Army helicopter crew chief I can say that Adams heat signature on the engines and pipes is very accurate.
Take shot everytime Adam explains Rub n' Buff to Norm on Tested

Just started this video and no! I have had alcohol poisoning before!
Is there a finished video?!! I have to see it!
Oh man - all these tested videos about design and props are soooo awesome!!! Really cool to get a look into Adams workshop - hopefully one day I can have one of my own...
I am going to look this movie/comic book up. It seems really interesting! Thanks Adam!
This was great. One of my favorite movies as a child, and still one of my favorite heroes' signature tools being re-created by one of my heroes.
@Tested Can we see the final please!

Yes definitely, would love to see the finished pack
I have never wanted to be adopted till I watched this video... Adam would be the greatest dad to have!
Thank you for doing these videos, i notice that Norm and Will are getting more and more comfortable with Adam and this whole concept, at first it felt a little uncertain, but now things are falling into place. Keep up the good work!
MORE PLEASE!!!!!!!
Four years later: Adams is grey. That bubble mirror is busted and Norm still wears that shirt!!!
the end result is so amazing
Adam... I know this is way late and I haven't seen your finished product on the rocket pack. To make the exhaust in combination with your lighting, what about using computer cooling fans (1 for each exhaust) with a CO2 fire extinguisher triggered with the hand controller? Just a thought and probably too late...
Love to coloration of the braided tubing. For those that don't know the colors actually come from the oxidation of steel at different temperatures from 400 to 800 deg F; at 480 deg F the steel will turn brown, at 520 deg F it will turn purple, at 575 deg F it will turn blue, and at 800 deg F it will turn grey.
Loving these videos, Adam Savage is one interesting bloke.
Saw one of those awesome guns from The Fifth Element in the background!
I loved the Rocketeer.. one of those big movies form my childhood. If I EVER went all in on a costume, a Rockteer costume would certainly be up there.
I grew up watching Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and The Rocketeer. Every time I watch that movie, I feel transported. I love it!
Strange to see Adam "getting old". I love this series.
Sorry to hear that. Best of luck on the next run at things!
I've watched this movie as a child so many times.
when can we see it FINISHED!? unless Adam hasn't finished it yet of course.
I don't know what it is about Adam, but I could watch the dude talk about this stuff all day long. The way his mind works is just fascinating.
Officially the coolest channel on KZread.
Pretty good replica discoloration; the diffuser of the rolls royce jet engines I work on look like that almost exactly.
Funny story. Disney Junior came out with a new Rocketeer show this November. However Disney forgot to release any merchandise for the show before Christmas. I'd expect this from other companies, but not Disney.
That's a damn good idea, I'm making a pack at the moment.
Recording to the Star Trek voyage DVD special features. The original pack from the film. was used in some of the Captain proton episodes ( Tom pairs Holodeck programs)
Thanks, I think I'm going to work on it slowly at the beginning of the year so it'll look really good by October....hopefully. But we all know how life can change drastically in the span of a year.
i take it you have the helmet?? as i love that thing sooo much the way it kinda locks on to the top of the pack and makes it all streamlined...... awsome adam is the don of knoledge hehehe
The rocketeer is awesome! I played it on the commodore 64!
this is in dire need of an update!
hey Adam, awesome stuff as usual. I know you said you used urethane resin for the thrust directors i guess i will call them. Just an idea, but something with an incredibly similar shape would be a automotive turbine, similar shape/size plus you would get a nice turbine in the bottom. Not criticizing just a thought i had watching this. Again thanks for sharing these :)
Who makes the strip lights? A link would be great!
Update?

Adam Savage is hard to interview. The best thing to do is let him talk about whatever he wants to talk about because it's always super interesting and on point. People make it hard to interview him by trying to dumb down what he says and directing his talking points. He doesn't need any of that, he just needs someone to hold the mic.
You can get them at HobbyPartz(yes with a z). When you go to the website there will be different categories on the left, and one will be LED Lights. They will on that page in may different colors, but they are not $1 a foot ($13 for 2 meters) like Adams's Lights. Hope that helps.
Add some flame with David's design. Search for EDF afterburner. This would give the look and the sound :)
Adam is the rocket pack finished it looks kool
Straw color is a higher temp color past the blue and purple. Remember heat treating in shop. Was going to use those led strips on my r/c Munsters style dragster. Prices change. Auto or home same thing. Home center just had 120 to 12v charger plug and was cheaper. Auto have to cut off power point plug.
Adam Savage; the most interesting Man in the world
What was the brand of the lights?
We hope to see the full thing. He said the body was in the shop being plated.

I was just going to say that!
I went to see the Rocketeer when I was 8 or 9 years old. The theater had a guy who dressed up as the Rocketeer to greet people in the theater, which was cool. About 40 minutes into the movie, I had to pee so I left the theater and went to the restroom. The Rocketeer was in one of the stalls going to the bathroom and he just put the helmet on the floor. I could have grabbed it and fled, but I chickened out. My thinking at the time was, "it might be the real Rocketeer and he'll get me".
The mirror in the background wasn't always broken?
Where is the video for the finished thing,Tested!!
Why do I have the feeling this is in prep for this years Comic-con in San Diego
It's been 7 years... I saw the pack in the background of many of his newer vids but can't find any video of him completing it or even showing the completed piece. What gives?
Where can you buy the LEDs?
-"I have no idea" Wow. I did not expect that.
I can not for the life of me remember what the piece of kit is called that he has the LEDs hooked up to that the voltage can be adjusted. Can anyone help me out with this? Great videos also! Please release more and more frequently if you can!
Where did he get those LED's?
You don't want heat discoloration in aircraft parts as it indicates the heat treatment of the metal has been effected and the temper and properties may change. Usually jet engines have soot in the exhaust and titanium color (because hot parts tend to be titanium)
"Exactly" "Exactly"
PLEASE Adam, give us a full rundown of your Rocketeer costume. It looked great, I'm in the process of building my own. Which means I have a month and 10 days to complete it.
When do we get to see the finished product?

Still not yet, past me.
Before the film, there was the wonderful The Rocketeer comic by my late friend Dave Stevens. Dave originated the designs used in the film.

You were friends with Dave Stevens? Awesome.
Yeahs it's an adjustable power supply, I think that one is an extech brand. Its voltage and output adjustable.
curiosity at its finest...
HELP!!! Does anyone know where to get those strips of leds with self stick backing for $15.00???
Use fibreglass strands and put them in front of the led's and put a fan inside to give the illusion of flames.
Is this done?
Needs it for stability!
The rocket engines look like small APU turbines from a large twin or a small luxury jet. Nice work btw.
So, how'd it turn out?
I want to know where he found the led strips
@Adam be careful with self stick led. Heat and such makes the cheap ones delaminate and wrecks it. I found out the hard way
Blade runner mirror behind them hahaha! Awesome
Exactly.
Adam's cave is so jam packed now compared to this!
I think the guy talking to adam was in Burn Notice
Have you tried Ebay?
so....is it finished yet?
Yes yes he is :D
you could use a co2 canons to blast exhaust
I hope one day to be able to afford to be this nerdy
Adam could use RC Gas turbines to add the thruster look, feel and effect to the model.
2:00 for some reason made me laugh. I expected him to know for sure.
Aaaahhh... I looove this series. Say, wouldn't it be cool if Adam's rocketpack would release CO2 from the jet exhausts?
Problem with the Rocketeer is its set in 1938 but it has a 1928 Gee Bee in it as if it was a new plane. That always bugged me.
Show the finished! Please!
Adam needs to give credit to Dave Stevens, the brilliant comic book writer/artist who created the Rocketeer -- including the rocketpack, helmet and jacket designs duplicated in the movie.
awseom i want to see more i have a deadspace rocketeer rig i have to make.
yeah he has the helmet . you can see it on one of the comicon videos
does he ever finish any of these projects??

Sometimes, but a lot of them have been on the shelf for years.
Adam: *relevant statement* Norm: *irrelevant restatement of what Adam said* Adam: "Exactly"
every one hated this movie but the rocket pack was a beautiful prop, and the helmet was an early version of what they designed the first iron man helmet to look like. (the one at the start of iron man 1)
I think it looks to clean. It should have more soot on it!
I'd have gone with blues only for the flame led. The pack runs on alcohol, which produces a blue flame.
Allow me to clarify: Amazon sells them for $1.00/ft. In the latest video(Bourne Burn-bag)Adam explains this...just uploaded a few hours ago.(9/6/2012)
And 2 years later where is the Re visit?

Actually, it was pretty much posted less than a month after this video. It is called "Adam Savage Surprises Fans at Comic Con" and while it isn't the same type of video showing weathering detail or anything, it does show the entire costume in good detail as he walks around the convention. The finished costume was also shown in Tested's 2012 SDCC Photo Gallery and got featured in some mainstream media, including Entertainment Weekly.

Updated
I wish I could contract Adam to make me a Jin-Roh Panzer-Cop armored suit.
'1' of 'em, to be exact.
Well, he says Amazon, eBay also always seems to have them too.
Weird how Adam opens every video saying here in my cave but scolded Norm for it lol
So... This *isn't* the Rocketeer Rocket Pack as the title states, but rather the *engines* from the rocket pack.
Made the mistake of reading your comment before the video actually started...all I've heard so far is "Exactly" XD
