Ever heard of story of a desperate man who goes find his old hard drive contains with thousands of bitcoin at a garbage dump site every day? Now that is one sad story. Prior to 2013, everyone was thinking that even 100 bitcoins is useless in real life. Had I known bitcoin would be where is it now (like everyone else), a broke 23 years old me in 2010 wouldn't mind starving everyday just to invest $1000 in my bank in bitcoin so in 6 years to come, he would be enjoy jet-setting around the world and snort cocaine off from the ass and boobs of prostitutes in each every continents. Ah well, I could only dream..

one of my buddies tried getting me into bitcoin when it was around 80 cents. I was going to buy $1,000 worth for kicks but didn't really understand the concept and when started telling me about planning to buy expensive graphics cards to "mine" them thought it was some kind of scam to sell hardware. My bud bought 8 gpu's but then lost most of his savings in stock market and sold the gpu's before setting them up. Then years later he came up on money and invested 100k when bitcoin prices were going crazy. He was paying 2-3x retail cost for used more electricity efficient GPUs. Rented space in data centers to setup his mining farm. Then bitcoin started crashing and for few months he still did ok mining other cryptos and exchanging for btcs but with so many new coins coming out whole market got diluted and it was too hard to make $. It got to a point where his mining couldn't even cover electricity costs and had to fight to get out of his data center contracts and then sold off all his hardware for big loss as gpu prices collapsed with btc and other cryptos. So sick guy was onto it from the beginning and was so sold on the concept and still ended up losing bunch of money. He could have made 10s of millions of dollars just running his 8 gpus collecting bit coins.

It's not a "failure" and it's not a "scam". It's simply a newly emerging technology. The category it eventually falls under depends on how people will use it in the future. How are people going to call this a bullshit idea when it is clearly functional, solves a long-standing computing problem, and has been growing exponentially in use and progressive advancement for 6 years. Want a real scam? Try digging into how inefficient and inflexible our current transaction and financial systems are. How centralization has given huge institutions free reign to essentially gamble with people's money, and then get a nice bailout when they ultimately and inevitably fuck up.

Bitcoin mining is not very profitable anymore, and you need specific machines for it. You can mine ETH on a normal computer all you need is a decent GPU, then you can convert that into BTC, that is the best way to mine right now, but it's not clear how long that will last so it is a risk.

There's some fuzzy math going on at @2:43 $80,000 divided by 1250 kWh = $64.00 per kilowatt hour. I think he meant to say that their power requirements are 1250 kilowatts. 1250 Kilowatts x 24 hours x 30 days = 900,000 Kilowatt Hours 900,000 kilowatt hours x 8.9 cents (per kilowatt hour) = $80,100

Thanks, 400 antminers will most definately turn a profit as they are Application specific devices, meaning they are for mining crypto-currencies ONLY. A single Antminer is about 200 times faster than if you were to mine with just one AMD 290x. The thing is that this would cost a lot of money to start up & you wouldn't see profit straight away.

This video inspired me to start digging for bitcoins. After few days of non stop working I end up with, wait for it.... A burned motherboard and CPU. There are other cons and problems, from what I've seen their great expenses and problems are 1) wages and salaries 2) electricity 3) locals (I'd be surprised to discover they own all the places they operate) 4) obsolescence (technology evolves every time, their miners must stay at the top of efficiency, their cooling system however just has to be "good enough") 5) increasing difficulty (the more it goes, the harder it gets, the more expensive the investment has to be) 6) volatility (the Bitcoin is not a stable money and thus there is a very high risk when your business is based on them).

even back then, 20 bitcoinsX $200-300 (lowest prices of that year)=$4000-$6000 a day x 30 days =120.000-180.000/month from where you deduct the $80.000 electricity bill and some salaries. wasnt a bad investition. especialy with the chinese salaries lol

Some linux distro and Claymore most probably. But you can mine on any OS with any software you like on your home computer, the difference is legible. But when you have 6000 GPUS running over a few machines, the difference is suddently $20k/month.

This computer still can't run Minecraft at more than 120 fps. Guaranteed.

See theory proven. I mean, this was basic logic since my 6600K and 1070 can't even run it at over 150 FPS on highest settings. Optimisation?

It is not because they aren't powerful, but bitcoin miners relies on types of cards that doesn't really compute what your CPU or GPU would compute. Infact, they are more related to their ARM brothers, meaning that they are set to do more specific tasks. It is like you have hardware to specifically work with minecraft and only minecraft.
