Inside A Designer's Minimal Courtyard House With A Japanese-Inspired Garden
A weekly newsletter of home and interior inspiration, delivered to your inbox: themodernhouse.media/wrq
Five years ago, when Daniel Baer and Jassim Ahmad were looking to buy, they were after “a certain kind of house”. They wanted an inspiring live/work space from which Daniel could run his tableware brand, Monoware, that could double as a home to raise their daughter. Having signed up for listing alerts on The Modern House, they received one that instantly caught their eye, featuring an extraordinary courtyard house in south-east London. “It blew us away,” says Daniel, recalling their initial viewing. “It was late afternoon and the way the light was shining on the building was just beautiful.” Fast forward to now - and a landscape project later - we return for our Checking In film series to see how they’ve settled in and made the place their own.

As a garden designer myself, I'm always thrilled to see the gardens of these wonderful houses live up to the the innovation, precision and considered detailing that has gone into the architecture. So often what surrounds these houses is an afterthought; something that has been hastily thrown together when time, enthusiasm and budget has quite literally left the building. This new garden is not only beautiful in itself but complements and elevates the qualities of the architecture. Love it.
I watched this then looked around at my own living room and just sighed 😂😂 I’m not doing something right

Your solution: "Keep just what you need, let only pieces that bring you joy remain"
What a lovely couple! And the house reflects them so well; a true oasis in London.
Stunning. Especially the landscaping.
Oh I've always LOVED this house! If you want to see more of it, you can follow the construction in S14E05 of Grand Designs.

Thanks for saying this. I too loved that house. Interesting a few years later…it does hold up. I wonder why they decided to sell it.

It's not on utube or 4/Grand Designs (which is a disaster with only area and year for reference and the thumbnails don't match the episodes 😢🤪 SOUTH EAST LONDON 2014 👍
What a lovely green oasis in such an urban environment. The house is very interesting and calm as well.
Nice little video, good design. Thx for video!
Beautiful house and garden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In my youth i lived in West Dulwich! Much love from South of France, Marseilles
OH! I remember this house from Grand Designs! Such a amazing house. I wonder where the couple who built it are? Did they start another project? Congratulations on your home. Your garden looks so lush and calming.
I hope they kept the cool, vintage bathrooms that the original owners put in!

You can see this house being built by an artist couple on Grand Designs. They give a very generous explanation of the interior and fittings, really a great episode
Wasn't this house featured in Grand Designs?

I imagine they are rich but you don’t have to be rich. It is pretty pulled back with only a few things, choice to be sure. I love the Japanese grasses.

What is the translucent material used on the walls? It makes the exterior look very elegant and special.

It’s the stuff they use for greenhouses. Polycarbonate-twin walled but doubled up somehow. If you watch the show referred to Grand Designs-the couple went to Germany to source.
What a lovely garden. Does anyone know what those large grasses are? The low broad leaf ones that spill out onto the path?

They are hakone forest grass, hakonechloa macra, I believe.

@@WaitDer You are some kind of an idiot? What if she doesnt know about JK? Properties and land has been destroyed by this invasive plant, and some peoples lives ruined by it who can't move, can't sell their home.. it just seemed plain nasty, not a witty joke, but obviously that's what describes you ?
its cool but would be nice to see the place properly......
There's virtually nothing about that garden that is Japanese.

It's a trendy buzzword to say something is Japanese nowadays. When most of the time they saw a picture on Pinterest and think a courtyard= Japanese

Well yes, it does say inspired…..Hakonechola is Japanese and I think I saw some Kirengeshoma palmata-.
For a channel called "The Modern House," you sure don't show much of the houses. Grand Designs showed us so much more of this fascinating house. I guess style is more important than substance here. Suggest changing the name of your channel to "The Modern Artsy-fartsy Video."
so... "sterile" almost like a public place
