An Architect's Hidden Family Home Built Into A Hillside
A weekly newsletter of home and interior inspiration, delivered to your inbox: themodernhouse.media/2jj
Spotting Charlie Luxton’s home when approaching it from the street is no easy feat. But, as the architect - whose namesake practice specialises in sustainable, site-specific projects - explains, that was all part of the plan. “The star of the show is the landscape,” he says, explaining his decision to “tuck” his house into a gently sloping hillside. We agree - the lush surroundings are lovely - but we think the design of the house is rather remarkable too. Watch our film now to find out why.

"This is a living home." (5:56) What I love about this property is the blend of design and livability. So many "high-design" homes feel like no one is actually living in them. They tend to be cold. This was warm and purposeful. Love it.
What a great video. Love their approach - no pretentious BS. Beautiful and practical home - a great combination.

The pretentious BS is referring to him as an architect. There is no, it would appear, mention of Charlie on the ARB register. He is not therefore an architect. It’s that simple. Until he registers if Charlie called himself an architect it would be a criminal offence :-)

Thanks John Kellett. Where I am from, architect is not a (what we call) "protected title". Although you can be statelice sed.

@@FilthyFloor, That might be true but the building and The Modern House are British :-) In fact in most 'English' speaking nations only qualified architects are allowed in most cases to carry out that function giving you the customer far more protection. Here in the UK only architects are qualified as architects but anyone, even those without any relevant qualifications are allowed to design buildings. Charlie is not a bad architectural designer (and therefore legally able the design buildings) but unless he gets off his arse and qualifies he can never be, or refer to himself as, an architect :-)
This house is so charming! And what a lovely family!
Lovely house and I really like this presentation. Normally KZread videos of modern houses are a bit 'high-art' but this felt like a very lived in place where the architectural features made living sense.
I probably watch thousands of house tours, and this house is one of my favorites.
Well done Charlie, haven't seen you on the TV for a while! Great space and thanks for show us around!
This house is FANTASTIC! So unique but so cozy. Artistically crafted but livable. And such a sense of space and privacy, yet there are houses also around. 🥳
This is really jolly good. Refreshing to find an architect not obsessed with boring, serious minimalism.
I thoroughly enjoyed this house. I love how Kate's head just sits perfectly above the shelf as she walks across the hallway...........but really - it's a truly beautiful home. I can see how it can breathe and grow with a family. Practical and elegant. The windows are perfectly unfussy. I love the wild flower meadow and the strawberries on the roof.
This is house is exactly the perfect amount of modern and still sooooooo homey. I love it sooo much.
Such a charming home. The landscape and abundance of plants is heaven to me. Lovely family!
So beautiful. I generally like older houses but this the most lovely new home I have ever seen ❤❤❤
Lovely modest space where everything is considered and all corners are used, that surrounding land too! Lucky kiddies to have such nice space
I would love to live in a home like this beauty. It is so livable and gorgeous inside and out! ❤
what a beautiful house especially the way their blend nature , landscape with architecture. they are such a lovely couple . i can see the way that architect look at his wife with such love with his expression . That is one lucky women living with beautiful home not a house with loving family 😊

Beautiful home! But I have to admit the way he looks at her when shes talking is so attentive and cute 😭❤
Massive YES to longer videos, such as this one, Thanks! M.H...You did it again.
Hi Charlie & Kate, thanks for sharing your gorgeous home! I love your wee tree courtyard, the beautiful materials, lovely light streaming in from your wild meadow garden. What a gem! Very liveable. Lots of love 🥰❤😘
There’s such a cozy home vibe yet modern appeal. ❤
Charlie Luxton's house is beautiful. It reminds me of the Glass House designs. Love it!
Woah, if this is not categorized as perfect house, then I don't know where this will fall. 😍❤
Watched the series Charlie did when he built this house. It's lovely to see how the surrounding landscape has softened the hard edges, it has a lovely lived in feel to it now.

Very well done - what a view - especially like the roof/landscape and thoughtful divide of public/private. Also like the closing phrase "a house to live in - take a good kicking and last." #Bravo from USA.
Awesome! Beautiful place! Thanks for the virtual tour.
Lovely hosts! The home is beautiful and the landscape is spectacular!
Love the kitchen garden roof! Lovely people and very practical home
What a quaint and lovely house. Tucked in. Homey. Cosy. And well thought out.

Love your house and its concept of honest living. Were embarking on a hillside self build and wondered where you purchased your cladding? I love it.
Exquisite.

Nice
This looks like a lovely home...but sorry Modern House, the editing cuts were just way too fast. You barely got to see each room before it was moved onto another area. Please some more stationary shots would be great. Thanks.
my dream's house😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Отличный дом и офис
Love the concrete finished patio, how did you do this Charlie?
fab
Absolutely beautiful. Genuine questions that I bet are on many viewers' minds: 1. Where is this? 2. How much land do they own? That open field out to the office looks infinitely expansive 3. How much did it cost to buy land and build the home? 4. How were they able to afford it all?!?!? Incredible!

1. Oxfordshire (in the video) 2. A lot, probably inherited 3. I reckon they didn't have to buy the land 4. Lord knows

Rural house? yes there have been a lot of such buildings. english brick meets ideas (materials, corten) of rcr architects project. this is much warmer from the inside.
Is Charlie Luxton an Architect? Doesn't appear to be on the ARB's register. Protected title & all that...
Hi, I was just wondering who the art above your kitchen is by? It is beautiful (so is the house!)

Can the editor / creator of the video let me know what song that is in the beginning of the video? I really dig it and Shazam didn’t find anything. Thanks!
OMG what plant is it at 3.10 ?
What is the flooring made of? I am trying to avoid tiles and don't think you have tiles.
Where's this?
Looks like mosquito heaven!
Architectural Digest whooooo???????
And not a single photo of rooftop...
The vertical parts are okay, the horizontal looks like a fast food restaurant. Erase the flowery lovely explanation and you get a C-.
That dog looks like a koala!
Does he have a brother?
Is Charlie an architect now then? No sign of him on the register. He 'dropped out' of the course didn't he, and therefore isn't an architect? Hopefully he did finish the course, he'll benefit a lot.

Seems to be doing OK as an architectural designer and TV presenter, I'm sure it's modern houses mistake in the title not his. Much nicer house than a lot of architects own homes.

@@directresolution , but that’s the problem. He couldn’t be arsed to finish gets get given the title by other who ought to know that he isn’t an architect :-) Is a medical student who hasn’t completed their course a doctor? No!
@directresolution

@@johnkellett7797 You seem very angry about this and if he has said he is an Architect himself then he shouldn't but he hasn't here so complain to Modern House and I'm sure they'll correct it. However there are plenty of none doctors that I would take advice from over doctors (I had to correct a doctor a few years ago as they were going to prescribe something that could have made me go deaf!) and there are lots of builder that I would take advice from over architects. I wouldn't use such dismissive language towards someone (couldn't be arsed) who was in all likelihood doing better than myself. On big commercial projects I would almost certainly want an architect but for single residential I would just be looking at past results (long term results). Experience nearly always beats education, obviously experience+education is best but education is often not formalised qualification.

5:23 he very carefully implies it here. Just sad to not finish the degree but kinda surf on the whole „ being a cool architect“ vibe.
Solar? Heat pump? All electric? If not, it's not contemporary.
I hope he does not say "dialogue with the surroundings or vernacular"....though his house would need to be made of straw for that to be valid.
‘we’ didn’t do anything but design and pay😂
We are so cool, you can check out the hard surfaces of our house. So unpretentious right? Our next house will be a bunker. Doors and windows are highly overrated snd classic gross right?
