This week, we tour a splendid HDB jumbo flat nestled in the heart of Woodlands at Marsiling Rise. This 1,830 square foot home is a merger of two units (4 and 3-room flat), offering a lavish amount of space that's been meticulously transformed into a residence reminiscent of the 1930s heritage black and white houses.
As you enter, you're greeted by a long, brightly lit entryway that doubles as a balcony. Lattice doors, windows lining the stretch, black and white floor tiles, bamboo blinds, and pendant lights add a sense of nostalgia and elegance to the space, evoking the ambiance of a landed home.
Venturing inside reveals the true spaciousness of the place. The living room, dining area, and kitchen layout are thoughtfully designed for seamless flow. An area by the entrance, currently empty, is future-proofed with air conditioning and a fan, ready to be transformed to suit the household's evolving needs.
The dining area accommodates a 2-meter table with ease, leaving plenty of room for additional furnishings. Adjacent to it lies the kitchen. Initially enclosed, the wall was removed to create an open and ventilated space adorned with black and white accents, Shaker style cabinets, and ample counter space. The service yard was transformed into a utility area, thoughtfully designed with a stackable washer and dryer, cleaning supplies storage, and a concealed chute.
The living room features a large L-shaped sofa and a wall-mounted TV. Wainscoting detailing adds visual interest to the space. Nearby lies a home library, a sanctuary for the book-loving homeowners with a combination of enclosed and open shelving, and a cozy reading nook by the window.
The residence houses three bedrooms, each unique in its purpose. The common bedroom serves as a home office and a potential bedroom, complete with a six-panel wardrobe.
The second bedroom functions as a junior master suite, equipped with an en suite bathroom, and a study.
The master bedroom, separate from the common bedrooms for added privacy, features a seven-panel wardrobe, a makeup vanity, and ample space for additional furnishings or a baby cot.
The master bathroom is well-lit with two windows, a spacious shower area, and finishes mirroring the common bath.
Once again, special thanks to the homeowners for opening up their beautiful unit to us.

I like the space. It is minimal and monochromatic, but it is tastefully done, with brightness, functionality and expansiveness clearly a priority. Good job!

This house is fantastic in term of architectural design but not so much in interior design. The house has an opposite issue compared to most Singaporean homes when it comes to size. This house feels very barren and empty partly because the owners don't have much furniture and the furniture are quite small compared to the scale of the rooms. Having enough space between furniture is essential but too much space can make your house seems unfurnished. For example, the dining room is huge but you can only see a small dining table in the middle. The house has ample of space for a living room but the owner created a small nook for the sofa and TV console instead. The distance between the sofa and TV is too close and there's not even space for a coffee table. Yet, there is so much wasted space between the sofa and the dining table. This is a huge faux pas in interior design. I can see the owners love rattan but buying every furniture in the same series is too matchy-matchy. The rattan TV console, the rattan sideboard, the bookshelf and the huge closets all have the same finishing. It's fine if you have other types of furniture around to create a break visually but because the furniture are so sparse that they are very noticeable. You can tell the house is quite empty because the host has an echo when she speaks. I know people love minimalism but minimalism only works best if your house is small. If you have a huge house like this, you should try to fill up the space. Get a nice rug, have some tall house plants, hangs some paintings, replace those ugly boob lights with hanging ceiling lights/sconces, etc. Also have some colours in your home, white and brown without any texture throughout the house is boring.

I do believe its empty because its new and the owners could possibly take their time to design their home that suit their taste.

It's almost as if the owners were reluctant to have their house featured on this show. You can see that some rooms are shown at a particular angle in order to hide something (maybe a treadmill in that empty room?). There is a lot of space but no warmth or any personal touches at all that would make this place feel welcoming.

Generous and luxury of space for this unit, the colonel style is hard to fault too. The removal of balcony is quite a waste as balcony is quite the soul of a house. Given its spacious enclosed nature and lack of ceiling fan, it is intended as mainly air-con operated, the PUB bill will be appalling.

The homeowner doesn’t know how to furnish the space. It looks so empty and the choice of the furniture is just not right. The dining set look kind of sad. As usual, you see those contractor built ugly boxy carpentry everywhere. The carpentry doesn’t fit in with the intended style. Don’t see any ambient lightings. That may be why the space look boring and uninviting. In one of the bedroom, the bed is placed next to the bathroom, under the aircon and a tiny window. Bed, especially a bigger bed is always the focal point of a bedroom. As such, it is important to pay attention to what go onto the wall above the headboard. For practical and aesthetic reason, aircon fan coil is definitely a no no.

It could have been a fantastic apartment but the interior design is simply awful...No separation between day and night areas, huge bedrooms but super tiny bathroom. If a guest need to use the toilet, needs to walk into the entire kitchen. There is a gigantic living area but the sofa and the tv are relegated to a cramped space, the dining table floats without a logic. Such a missed opportunity
