Game Review & Impressions

I recently longplayed the Sega Genesis version of this horizontal shooter, but it wasn't until after I'd uploaded that particular video I learned the game originated from a coin-op. The background info online indicated the Genesis version had revamped graphics, but I wasn't prepared for just HOW different they are. The arcade version is rooted in Taito's cutesy cartoon aesthetic, much like Rainbow Islands, whereas the Genesis went for an edgier, grungier and more adult look, probably to appeal to the demographic the console was aimed at.
The core gameplay is much as you would expect to find in most shot 'em ups. You get to power up you weaponry with an assortment of air-to-air and air-to-ground projectiles, multi-shots and burst waves. One of the weapons even looks like the mesh from a giant fly-swat, which would be apt, considering the enemies you're facing.
If the game has a selling point, it's the excellent end-of-level bosses, which look excellent. The attention to detail in the character sprites and animation is highly detailed and wonderfully stylised. I also have to wonder whether Capcom took inspiration from this game when they developed the Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse; it could be coincidental, but the spider and web-based boss fights between the two games are eerily similar.
The arcade version of Insector X isn't the most compelling shooter I've ever played, but it's decent-enough, and the art-style makes it worth persevering with.

Didn't see this one in decades...pure cuteness 🤓
This game is in dire need of some parallax scrolling.

Yes the level around 15:50 the cloud background would of looked stunning in parallax.
I read a claim somewhere that the Genesis graphics are the style that the developer originally wanted to do, but Taito made them make it cute. Maybe some of the genesis version art was originally done for the arcade version.

In fact all of the background art is in the genesis style and was used nearly unaltered in the genesis version... looks like only the sprites were reworked to comply with Taito's demands for the arcade release.
Bravo
❤❤❤
This reminds me of Cloud Master
What a short game.

Dude this came out in 1989 on an Arcade board....90% of Pre-1990 Arcade games were beatable in 20-30 mins, not many 2-hour long RPGs on arcade
