Could a spindle whirl actually be part of an umbrella or parasol... Like ones that went over tractors etc to provide shade?!?

A new video from Chill Bill always has me saying "this is my excited face." 😂 Every time you find a spindle whorl it reminds me that I want to dig out my little wooden hand spinner and see if it has one. I'm not great at hand spinning... maybe a missing whorl is why. 😁

You should look into the "armpit" method of hand spinning. It is more controlled and creates a finer product, even if it is a little slower. You overspin the existing thread on the spindle, pinch the end, place the spindle in your right armpit to hold it steady, pick up a fresh length of combed roving, and add this new piece to the pinched end as you transfer the pinch from your left thumb and forefinger to your right thumb and forefinger. When you have drafted the new piece to be acceptably airy, you just let go of the pinch. Et voila -- you get about 5 inches of new handspun yarn. So productive and you can do it walking or in the car. I love spindlewhorls.

@@christinesbetterknitting4533 interesting! I get the gist of it, I've remembered that what I call a hand spinner is actually a drop spindle. Still, I stick it under the arm and basically let my fingers do the spinning as I pass from left to right, correct? We used to call that twiddle spinning. 🤣 As you twiddle the fleece/fibre roving in your fingers. Made blobby thread from cotton wool like that as a kid. The things you do to entertain yourself growing up with no tv or internet. 😂😂😂 Thank you so much! ❤️

@craftilyrecycled this is a version of twiddle spinning, but the overspinning does actually produce a fine steady half-ply as you find your rhythm with the drop spindle.

Better having a garden in the car than the rats that make nests in mine and eat all my wires! My wife has a Peugeot 4008, she love's it. I'm with you on the spindlewhorl, so many of them found in European fields. I can picture the farmer's wives and children spinning wool on the sides of the fields while their manfolk work the land. I know you've found neolithic but have you come across any Celtic finds in your area (or pre-Roman at least)?

Mystery object is toy car wheel painted black. Ale in the middle. They still use spindle whorls in areas today. Big and small. Simple and important accessory that allows thread to be spun. Some heavy thread some very fine thread. Thread is very important to our society. Spinning wheels are cumbersome and expensive. So good to see you looking so well!

I have started to genuinely believe that items you dig from such a hard hit field eventually become manifested by the digger, in this case you. If a random person without permission with his that field, not knowing of you and your luck with it, they may think it's the cleanest ever field, or sifted through with immense machinery.

Ive found some crazy stuff in the most detected public park in my city in new zealand, people have detected it for 20+ years but i go slow and dig literally anything and sometimes its a victorian silver/gold ring or coin 😎 its all about the history in the area, nothing else. Well also dont go to a previously excavated area 😆
