He was a fun one. One time a few years ago I was at Cucko Station (really Old Town Station in San Diego CA) and I waved to the Amtrak engineer passing through and he honked the horn 6 times, I loved that but since a few passengers and a security guard did not like that, they do not honk the horn so much anymore

Who knew that 12 years later, horns could sing again

I saw on the video ( this one) that 3:12 etc .People were crossing the tracks while the RXR were down !! In my opinion, how dumb and stupid and dangerous and careless!

I assume they rescinded the quiet zone due to lack of adequate pedestrian protection. Especially with the tram right next to it, lots of people just duck behind the gates and cross when they shouldn't.

It was something to do with current road markings & signage for the crossings didn’t pass an updated code for it to be a quiet zone

The Amtrak cabcars kick ass downtown!

Night of the 24th, I was working downtown and heard a really nice horn battle between outgoing Coaster and incoming BNSF. I was like "I haven't heard that in a long time... must be someone on the tracks?" Then I get home later and got on the computer... Union-Tribune is my home page, and I saw the story about it. Friggin San Diego, man lol

I’ve seen several people jump across a moving train on a double track section and they don’t even look to see if it’s clear.

As a trolley driver I definitely abused the horn

Going to take a wild guess the first Surfliner was apart of quiet zone being reinstated.

It seems like the crews aren't big fans of the quiet zone. They're certainly being enthusiastic.

Too Loud For People to Live There But I Glad Train Horns Are back Since 2011

The K5LA horn on Amtrak Surfliner cab car 6952 (Point Vicente) sounds pretty loud and solid! It's funny that in this same video, another Amtrak Surfliner cab car unit 6908 (Point Estero) is equipped with a K5LA horn that originally belonged to cab car 6952 since 2016. In a 2016 KZread video of Amtrak Surfliner cab car 6952's new sounding K5LA horn, it had just gotten a brand new #2 horn bell installed after years of sounding bad. At some point in the late 2010's, cab car 6952's new sounding K5LA horn was given to cab car 6908, and cab car 6952 got another new narrow font K5LA horn installed.

UPADTE: As of Monday January 29th, quiet zone has returned.

4:12 8:40 10:55 22:00 24:12 Really a shameful sight. 2304 had only just returned to service right before this happened, and it would have been a perfect opportunity for it to sound its new horn and for everyone to know what it sounds like now, because before now, 2304 was last known for having an infamous K5CA-LS. But unfortunately, right after it returned, before anyone could film it, it had a PTC failure, and since then has been trapped mid-set behind 2301, my personal Least Favorite unit on all of Coaster.

How long will it be suspended? I’m looking to probably making my way down there today

Well, that’s unusual. Why is this possible?

When in any area with cars and or pedestrans, since trains can't stop as easily on steel and the logistics of stopping long trains often won't work well, train operators need to say something, just as much as emergency vehicle drivers do. Why on earth did anyone in that industry cater to this silence, I don't know. And I live so close I can describe the faces peeking out into the daylight. The odd time I hear a horn due to someone actually walking on tracks in my silenced area, even right outside my window, it doesn't bother me, nor do the other sounds they make which I wake to day or night. Those are heavy and long freight trains. I say bring back the one thing that translates to something like, 'See me down the line, thats me comeing in, move it, now or you loose it.' That's the two long, one short, one long which should be the recognised standard, nothing more, but nothing less. For operators who want to have fun blowing the horns a lot, there's open areas away from populations, maybe not for inner-city trams or subways transpotaion, but use it responsibility and I'm happy with that. 😊

15:41 Looks like Amtrak Surfliner café car 6306 (San Timoteo Canyon) finally reverted back to its original Pacific Surfliner livery after months covered up in the X Games 2023 ad wrap. However, the "Amtrak California" text and the upper blue livery on café car 6306 appear to be peeling off already. Someone's gonna have to repaint the café car with new blue paint and reinsert the new "Amtrak California" letter decals.

I am just like that first engineer in my train simulator except I make sure that everyone knows that I’m coming through lol 😂. I sometimes just lay down the horn or sometimes I just do random hits on the horn

First engineer def reminded the SD folk why they have a stupid quiet zone lol. But MY GOD I forgot how good K5LA's sounded in SD!!!!

I love trains, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't like living here during this temporary quiet horn suspension! This would be so annoying after few hours in those flats
