Railfanning Downtown San Diego Santa Fe Depot Anti Quiet Zone Edition

On January 19,2024 here we are at Santa Fe Depot at 1 day into the suspension of all the quiet zones in Downtown San Diego. We all say; No Train Horn!? Yeah Right!! This was a very big protest against the reinstatement of a quiet zone again. For those who support the train horns, thank you very much. This video for those who say no to them quiet zones. This features lots of horn action! This ranges from the decibels going through the roof after nearly 14 years later than the first introduction of the quiet zones in effect in downtown San Diego. There is lots of quilling from the trains. There are some MTS Trolleys that are a hit or miss in this video so that it won’t be too long like it is very long already. Please bear with me on the length of this video. Thanks for your patience. Disclaimer; there’s lots of pedestrians that walked across the tracks as I’m filming the trains. At this location, there’s too much stupidity for to have been a QZ to be honest. There is insane Doppler Effect from all the horns. I hope you enjoy the Anti Quiet Zone Protest at Santa Fe Depot.

9)Amtrak 770:CDTX 2109/AMTK 6903 along with a Santee Bound MTS Green Line making its stop at Little Italy Metting a 12th & Imperial Bound MTS Green Line
10)Coaster 633:NCTC 5006/NCTC 2308 departure along with a MTS UC San Diego Blue Line Bound to San Ysidro
11)Amtrak 572:CDTX 2112/AMTK 6900
12)Amtrak 581:AMTK 6903/CDTX 2109 departs along with the arrival of a San Ysidro bound MTS UC San Diego Blue Line
13)Coaster 634:NCTC 2309/NCTC 5008
14)MTS UC San Diego Blue Line Bound for UTC makes way into Little Italy
15)Amtrak 774:CDTX 2118/AMTK 6907
16)Coaster 636:NCTC 2308/NCTC 5006 with a UTC Bound MTS UC San Diego Blue Line heading into Little Italy
17)Coaster 635:NCTC 5008/NCTC 2309 departs at about 10 minutes late
18)Amtrak 785:AMTK 6900/CDTX 2112
19) Coaster 637:NCTC 5006/NCTC 2308 departs with lots of quilling and a meet with a MTS UC San Diego Blue Line bound to San Ysidro
20)Coaster 638:NCTC 2306/NCTC 5003 arrives shortly after a MTS UC San Diego Blue Line Bound for San Ysidro heads into Santa Fe Depot
21)Amtrak 587:AMTK 6907/CDTX 2118
22)Coaster 640:NCTC 2301/NCTC 2304/NCTC 5009 meets the idling Coaster 639
23)Coaster 639:NCTC 5003/NCTC 2306 departs while Coaster 640 meets it on arrival into Santa Fe Depot where it terminates and then will become Coaster 641. Now is the action from the loud NCTC 5003 deafening the whole city of San Diego.

@sandiegorailcam thank you very much for your hard work on letting people see the trains on the other end of the Los San Corridor. It is really helpful for us railfans to see if a train is actually late or on time. It’s nice to have the railcam at Santa Fe Depot to also see when Northbound BNSF Freight trains leave Downtown San Diego to know when they will reach a certain point down the line. Also, I was the guy on the camera on January 19,2024 who was giving the Shaka to the trains the entire day. Mainly was at Santa Fe Depot to support the train horns and say no to them quiet zones.

It sure does have some nostalgic vibes when heard in horn alley.
My heart bleeds for the people paying $5,000 a month for their ultra-modern, downtown "luxury" accommodations.
Why don't they just elevate the station? Having that many road crossing and switches probably isn't good for capacity.

@@djmasterty2309 I remember seeing a video on why to not turn san diego into a quiet zone prior to it becoming one in 2012 and the video was very accurate showing different pedestrian senarios near the tracks and how people are not paying attention or don't hear the horn sounding.
I Just realized if the trains are honking 24/7 then that means that the 794 when it gets to Santa Fe depot it will be bit of a night there

The FRA visited Downtown San Diego after nearly 14 years of notifying the city and said the city is not providing the correct rail safety requirements for the quiet zones from Laurel Street down to Fifth Avenue. That’s mainly what happened. My hope is that the mayor of San Diego says that the people better learn to like it here and now. The death toll has skyrocketed ever since they made the quiet zones in the first place.
Peds don’t have gates which is why the quiet zones was suspended. Prob no medians for the cars too.

There’s no medians for cars. The only gates are only for the cars. Which I find crazy since people still go around the gates.

In order for the quiet zone to be reinstated, they would have to build either a median or quad gates for the cars and gates for the peds. Until that happens, expect the horns to keep blaring. Had something like that in Massachusetts happen a few years ago.

I’m thinking about it since it would make a lot more sense to do all of them monthly. There’s so many of them to where I felt like it would be a little more pointless to make. I’m seeing how the biggest railfanning moments from every month in their own videos.
