Misha to be honest, I repair n54/n55/s55 engines daily, and there was just 1 car on stock power that slip crank hub due to Launch Controls on Drag strip. Normally they spun on 550/600+HP, because there is so much torque and S55 drivetrain is really stiff. For tracking and daily driving stock crank hub is good. Its not about US guys, its whole world :) Love watching ur content!

I noticed you guys are running at 265 tire up front and a 295 in the rear. Do you think a 285 square setup will be sufficient for a race-prepped M4? I'll be running Pirelli DH slicks.

The crank hub is a common known problem for some BMW engines, like the N55 and S55. It's only an essential mod to do/replace if your car has a serious tune (stage 2 or more) and you go to trackdays quite often. It's also more common on cars with automatic gearbox due to the kickdown when you floor the throttle at low rpms and rpms change quicky. In stock form, i wouldn't worry about it. If you plan a stage 1 for your car, i would consider it. If you do stage 2, get it done.

FYI, according to a self reported poll of thousands of votes, stock has a 2.9 fail rate compared to 18.9% of modded. And 6MT has a failure rate of 4.3% and 23.9% for stock and modded respectively, compared to the DCT of 2.08% and 16.54% for stock and modded respectively. So crank hub isn’t for just modded, and it actually affects Manual cars more

The crank hub issue is also present in Belgium. There were a few stock and tuned m3 and m4's with the spun crank hub. Stock, slightly tuned, Full bolt on , turbo's etc , all kinds. Somebody even had a replacement by BMW self and got it spun a second time. After that BMW payed for a 'crank hub fix' in an agreement at a recognised garage. (ASD PERFORMANCE) Also seen bearly new M2's competition at a garage (BHT Performance) here in Belgium with almost no km's on it with a spun crankhub! (5000km - 10.000km) Some chose to do it , others don't. The aftermath from a Tuned M4 with spun crankhub was really bad and we all witnessed it at a local meeting. Probably most of the S55 powered Bmw's will be fine i guess, but it's definitly a real and existing issue. What a lap Misha enjoyed every second of it. That whine gives it a real race car feeling to it.

@@mgcharoudin I'm here in California too but never touched the crankhub since I also believe it is not necessary. I also have 95k kilometers on the car with no Issues and I track the car. Also 100% stock engine I should add.

@@mw_f80 I'm in California as well and I'm one of the few who upgraded their crank hub the moment I found out about it. Yes, my F80 is tracked. And I'm running full bolt ons with flex fuel sensor. Just peace of mind for me.

A stage 1 tune is advisable to have crank hub fix for sure. Not worth risking it slipping. Here in the UK we advise it on 80% on S55’s.

If you do drag racing, sure. Not smooth track driving.

Our F80 has over 156k miles from new in 2015 (yes we are still the original owners). Never had to deal with crank hub. It's been stock ever since (besides now having full CS/GTS drivetrain tunes (nothing to do with the engine), daily driven spiritedly. Crank hubs usually fail on highly modded cars as you mentioned.

Allegedly the crank hub issue is more of a concern with modified (e.g. more boost) S55 engines. I'm hoping that's true. Sincerely, unmodified F80 owner.

Yes and no. Some people have had issues with stock engines. It’s such a weird phenomena; some cars are even modded to 500-600 with no issues, others stock and their hub fails. The fail rate is low though; ~3% with stock engines (based on forum feedback)

Seems like if you drive sensibly and aren't kicking down from 7th to 3rd everywhere you're mostly fine. I drive mine in manual mode all the time and avoid excessive downshifts under load

Sick run man. So many great things to say about this, from the speedometer, rpm gauge and heel toe to the all out attack..You obviously know the car and the track, but is really impressive is how much you trust your instincts and driving ability. It looked like you were having a blast without really breaking a sweat. Nicely done!

I know a mechanic who owns a BMW performance shop who is very famous and even has several customers from over several countries coming to his shop. He has had several crank hub issues on the S55, even on bone stock engines.
