INSANE CHASE DOWN - 2023 Dinghy Derby Sports Class 2nd OUTRIGHT

The Annual 'Riverland Dinghy Derby' is widely regarded as one of the gnarliest races on the Murray River in South Australia. The event is 100km long and consists of 2 short and 2 long laps with a variety of river and creek sections to be navigated through that are littered with logs and snags both above and below the waters surface.
This video shows the race from the driver/navigators perspective from inside a 'Sports class boat'. The Sports class is a fully modified class using a Yamaha 30hp engine reaching speeds over 90km per hour. From a wild start and various hick ups during the race the pair of 'Shaun (Driver) and Joel (Navigator)' go on a hunt to take out 2nd Place Outright for the 2023 Riverland Dingy Derby.
Classes in order: 'A' (30hp Sports), 'R' (30hp Rookies), 'B' (30hp Super Standards), 'C' (30 hp Standards, 'D' (300cc Modified), 'E' (25hp Standards), 'F' (15hp Standards).

Man I got my boat took away from me buy my parents because we did this in the canals and mangroves. It was a blast and well worth the suspension. Watching you guys takes me back in time building and flying garage hydroplanes....50 years ago.

What is the setup for this kind of race..like how much hp is the outboard..this is like rally but without the co pilot reading the maps..the trust and coordination between this 2 guy is amazing

I believe its around 20-30 HP 2 stroke outboards with lots of modifications to make them faster, and yep similar to rally as the navigator / swinger at the front also has an important job to do

@@bacoon6499 thank you..20-30hp 2 stroke with mod is fast with that small dinghy..i thought max hp is like 15 because i have a 10ft fiberglass boat with 15hp 2stroke mercury and full throttle will easily flip my boat

There’s generally a lot of crashes and flips during the Championship series and people often get injured, practice is the key too keeping it upright

@@PORTER210 Dang, I know there's limited view on the KZread screen but it seems tough to know exactly where you're going without a well-known course and knowing which shortcuts to take and which to avoid.

@@richerwin6397 yeah mate, lots of trial and error, sometimes swimming through certain sections to know how far we can cut corners without hitting logs and things. the logs above water are honestly a breeze but the ones we can't see are the problem. just trying too remember exactly where they are for both driver and navigator is the biggest challenge, especially since they are littered across 100km. and without doubt every race the water level changes and you see or find more too remember.
