The problem I would see is that I would be so sweaty by the time I got to work 😮

I commuted for 3 months in Paris and it was good fun until it start being rainy then it was not fun at all. Also when I skate I can skate skate skate, only when I stop suddenly all the sweat start flooding which is not a great way to arrive to a meeting but to be said I was skating faster than the tube half way across the city.

I had a folding bike for commuting. If it was raining I could fold it and use public transport. That's why the weight and the size of a bike in folded state is crucial. My bike wasn't the best in those characteristics so I got tired of it. Lately I've begun to roller skate just for fitness and I see the big potential in this kind of transport. Of course you have to be very good at roller skating to be able to commute. Roller skates demand having high level of fitness and skill. So we'll see how far I can get there.

Personally I budget extra time in my commute. And take different ways to work on inline skates to avoid it feeling like a commute and retain the urban skate session feel. So I'll cut through different downtown streets even though it's slightly out of the way

I started commuting by bike because of the crowded public transport. When the weather is good and I am in the right mood, I will take my skates instead, this takes longer, but is way more satisfying. I think this way I will not loose my motivation to skate just for fun.

Good Point, but cycling is not as fun because you have way less freedom. A simple commute can become a freestyle session on skates easily. Thanks for the video.

@@nikobladingi have friends who are big in mountain biking and I went with them most weekends. I bought myself a good dual suspension bike. The problem was mountain biking for pleasure was for me only fitness , seeing a bit of nature and being with friends. The actual riding was mostly boring. Even going down ledges, doing jumps going up step hills was repetitive and never as much fun. So for me rollerblades in itself is an enjoyable freestyle session and cycling is a social a-b ride.

If i live in oversea it will be great. Unfortunaly, i grown up in Vietnam. You know, traffic here always crowded. The only way to stake here is in the stakepard or park. I tried to stake outside but so dangerours

I agree with you, when I used skates for commuting I experienced the same sensation. Sometimes I felt tired and I had to use the skates back home. Others, weather was not helping too much. Now I used them just for fun and once in a while for commuting. But taking them as an option is better feeling for me.

Thanks for sharing mate. I never used them for commute myself, it’s more like a research field for me. It’s been a three years long hobby for me now, and unfortunately I do skating less and less time every year. Still enjoy them of course but far from the first year.

I am using my bike for getting to places fast, it just seems more convenient. Skating remains a leasure activity for me. But the reason for me is that I don't enjoy putting my skates on and off. It seems like such a small thing but that extra step of putting them on is too much of a hassle if I need to get somewhere quickly for me.

I can relate to that. Cycling was always fun until I started using it as commuting. After sometime, the bike became merely my means of transportation. I don't regret it though, because skating has been my main hobbie and it's so much fun! At first I thought you'd say skating for commuting could be a bad idea due to bad pavement, overcrowded streets and too much hills, which is the case of where I live.

  • @nikoblading

Thanks for the comment mate. Bad pavement could be an issue too, but there are a bigger wheels for that. There are even skating wheels you can pump with air. Not sure how enjoyable they are.

I've just started my adventure with skates. My idea is to get some skills, buy 3-wheel skates (since we have paving stones almost everywhere) and use them occasionally for commuting at good whether or as the backup if car breaks down.

  • @nikoblading

If you just started, just a few considerations for you. 3 large wheels are pretty fast but less stable. It just takes some time to get used to them. You can also have a look at 4x100 slightly rockered setup, it will be more stable and will go very smooth on the uneven surface, but it’s a considerably heavier setup than 3 wheels. Good luck with, your skating journey mate.

@@nikoblading thank you for the advice. Luckily there's the store where they offer a frame for test, so, definitely, it won't be a shot in the dark.

I agree with Nico. Not only the wheel size but also the frame length is crucial for riding on bad pavement, so the 4x100 setup will give you the best experience. Plus the slight rocker will make the skates way more maneuverable and fun and still stable because of the longer frame. The only downside is that you'll have to be more careful with crossovers, but it's not a hard thing to adapt to. By the way, if 4x100 seems to intimidating, you could go for 4x90. It's more different from 4x80 than one might think.

I love my 4x90mm rockered Endless frame. One of my favourite setups. The wheels are big enough, quick enough and very stable.

I commute via skates and it has the opposite effect on me, makes me want to go skate for fun even more. Ive luckily never felt obligated to skate since cycling and public transport are also options. I also dont stick to a strict AtoB route, that probably helps.

Thanks for the comment mate, it’s good to know that commuting on skates works for so many people. May I ask how long you’ve been commuting on skates, is it an every day commute or by your desire?

@Niko - Rollerblading in Australia Been doing it for about two years. I wish it could be every day but weather occasionally gets in the way. NGL It takes awhile to build up to, fatigue and minor injuries during the first few months of commuting were common for everyone in my friend group.

It depends on your philosophy of rollerblading. I love rollerblading to and from my lessons so effectively that is commuting on skates to my skate school.

I am lucky to have a bike path that goes all the way to my work from near my house and a bus route that can get me back if I’m to tired. It does get annoying with how bad your feet can get and how sore your legs can get after a week of skating but with a 3 x 110 setup for me I find it better than biking or walking. I could see how bad it would be for someone without an easy way home or to work without your skates as if something went majorly wrong you would just have to walk

  • @rururu5630

No time on skates is wasted time! You could practice techniques or whatever on the path to keep it interesting if you really had to. Cycling is soooo boring compared to skating, so I don't see how skating would be boring. I would love to commute with skates, but I have too much gear for work that I need to haul by car. Plus, I can work indoors or outdoors depending on the assignment for the day, so I don't want to be drained for work. It is too bloody hot most of the year.

Nope nope nope. Tried cycling to work and was left with mental trauma from the distance sustained from motorists. The pathways are in no state to skate and the roads are far too dangerous. Not being sure where to skate is why I haven’t bought a pair yet.

During my cycling to work years, on my way to work I tried not to overload myself to avoid excessive sweating. Irish mild climate helped a lot in staying cool. But on the way home I just throttled pedals until my quads caught on fire. I guess same could be done with skates, also it depends on the climate obviously. Australian and Irish summer are huge difference.
