I wish I'd seen this particular video first. But I was able to accomplish it using a transparent png distress image. Converted text to paths etc. Select all objects. Then selected the object > mask > set inverse and it works nicely. Thanks!

I like that way too. Actually I should update this video because the masking method has some advantages.

3 days ago I didn't know Inkscape existed, now I can't stop watching your videos 😄 Will definitely have to try it, looks like it's giving Illustrator a run for its money. But in terms of this video, I suggest converting the textures into vectors before punching them out, so that everything's scalable.

Thanks so much! Totally agree with that tip. Recording a vintage shirt design video and will be doing the distressed effect with vector texture for exactly that reason.

One thing I have finally noticed is in the lower left corner is a box with a number, typically 100, and a - + next to it. That will left you control the opacity without switching to the fill/stroke menu.

I really appreciate all of your Inkscape tutorials. Please keep making them! And would this work if you wanted to add a textured background to a layout? Like a magazine/PDF? I'm currently working on a game and needed something a little more than a white background.

Great tutorial. I can't figure out why if I export the svg before I distress my image, it exports fine. When I add the distress and then export, it crops it to the upper quarter of the image.

  • @IronEchoDesign

Thanks! Export sometimes crops items in unexpected ways. Sometimes if you group the whole distressed image and scale it down even slightly, then Export works properly. Set the export area to Selection also. I see the strange crop happen when I do watercolor projects. Hope this helps!

@@IronEchoDesign Ok...I tried that. For some reason, it's fine when I keep my canvas large. But if I reduce the image down to just the area of the print, it does the weird crop. I can export the SVG fine when I export the whole document... But it doesn't help when putting it on a program for a shirt print. Doesn't happen when I export it in PNG. Oh well... Thanks for taking some time to try and help.

  • @IronEchoDesign

Hello! It could be the source image is dark and the default is creating a full black preview. Try adjusting the threshold slider, deselect Live preview, and then re-select Live preview and see if it adds clarity.

Great tutorial but I want my distress to be white. When you pulled over and it became black I was like dang. I'm trying my hardest have been for a while to get that distressed vinyl cover look, it's so hard with freeware. Please help and thank you for your channel your a boss.

Thanks so much!!! I'll revisit this after work. My guess is to make the distress in a vector format and then change it white. Or- change the distress on the Fill and Stroke Menu down towards the bottom where the Blend mode is located- could try some of the dropdown options in there for more realistic overlay. Hope this helps!
