Very useful in a dire emergency. Lidocaine HCL is available online for animals on Chewy. It’s the exact same thing but you don’t have to be a doctor to buy. You never know when one of your sheep might need sutures and you’re very far from any medical facility or there’s a large scale disaster preventing medical care 😊

Great video! Wish it was around in the dark ages when I was in school. IMHO, anyone who back country adventures on bike, foot, or raft etc, should carry the basics and knowledge for suturing as part of a first aid kit.

Excellent video, however, I do have one question. Why do you choose to pivot the needle versus simply removing it from the skin entirely and then reinserting in the opposite direction of the first pass? (Reference: 2:40). To me it seems as though pivoting the needle causes more damage than simply removing and reinserting. Thank you!

Great question! Honestly, the main idea behind it is avoiding another poke of the needle, but like you said, there’s a risk of causing more damage than just pulling it all the way out if it’s not done well. If the clinician barely leaves the tip of the needle in the skin as they pivot, it shouldn’t be a problem. However, if the clinician is not confident in that movement, it would be better to remove fully and re-insert. Thanks for watching and following along!

Just incase you actually do aspirate blood and have entered an artery, what should be done? How to achieve hemostasis for the bleed you caused?

99.9% it’s a small vein, not an artery so close to the surface. Arteries are thicker walled and more elastic and tend to “roll” out of the way. Withdraw slightly, redirect, aspirate again, then inject slowly in the event you’re still in a vein. Control any bleeding if necessary with pressure while you wait for the anesthetic to be effective.
