Initial D Arcade Stage 7 AAX (Teknoparrot 1.33)

Ойындар

Quick playthrough of the first couple of stages in Initial D Arcade Stage 7 AAX using Teknoparrot 1.33 arcade loader (big ups once again to the Teknoparot developer Reaver for making stuff like this possible). This is played with my Logitech DFGT wheel.
This has been playable for some time now in the latest Tekknoparrot but it's taken me a little while to actually give it a try. Whilst the Initial D series of games are fun to play, I've personally never fully understood their phenomenal popularity, with the whole only racing one opponent at a time thing on tracks that seem a bit monotonous looking. I guess the popularity of the Initial D brand carries the series a long way and the game is matching what happens in the other media associated with it. But, personally, I'd rather be racing against multiple opponents on typically outlandish Sega of the 90's style tracks (Y'know the ones set in biodomes, giant drive thru aquariums, ancient ruins and/or amusement parks/haunted house et cetera).
But regardless of my gripes about the way the tracks look and the fact you can't ever race more than one CPU opponent, the ID games certainly play and handle well in classic arcade racer tradition and, although a bit bland with regards to trackside detail, the stages themselves and all the cars look nice enough and run at 60fps. The high NRG Eurobeat soundtracks are certainly a bit of an acquired taste as well. Part of me loves them, part of me hates the fact that I do...
Anyhoo, this is going to be my last upload for a few weeks as I'm off on holiday after the weekend. Toodles!

I hope I can explain why this series is so popular. INCOMING WALL OF TEXT WARNING: The initial D series is popular because of its premise: the guy who seems to have the crappiest car ends up being the best, tryumphing against all odds thanks to his technique and efforts. They don't race for money rather than for pride and honor. It's kinda like Rocky with cars. I drive an old car that everyone here regards as crappy, yet it is inmensely popular in the Czech republic, so I can relate to developing a fondness for an old car and getting to develop a symbiosis with it while driving. Also, in regards to the 1 vs 1 battles, think that it is, as of now, the only game to do this right. You only scratched the surface, but the latter tracks become narrower and more intrincate, and, contrary to other games, where drifting is merely for show, here it has a real purpose: if you slide the entirety of your car body lenght covering both lanes, your rival doesn't have a clear opening to overtake. That, plus having the one rival taunting you makes it become more personal. Also, the fact that you can hear your rival's reactions adds to the atmosphere of the game (and is also hilarious, specially with the more hot tempered rivals, who yell and curse every time you overtake them). I've had more tension in the 1 vs 1 races in this game than in the 16 anonymous racers vs me of Project Cars 2. In regards to the design of the tracks, I see that you only played the first two, which are obviously the easiest and widest, but they get more and more elaborate. Also, despite their names, they are based on real roads and locations in Japan (there are comparison videos of people running though them in real life and the game) and they managed to nail them down to every singboard and pothole. I know this is no Sega Rally or Daytona scenery porn, but think about how most of the PC and console racing games today have slowly veered towards full-of-stickers competition cars running through identical looking real life circuits (with nothing by the sides of the circuit but armco barriers, fences, and the ocasional stands), so having these polished to a mirror sheen beautiful 90's japanese cars reflecting roads full of trees while winding through cliffs and valleys is actually quite a pretty sight in comparison. There's this one in which you can clearly see the rest of the track at the other side of the valley, which you reach on the bridge ahead. It's quite something. Used as I am to the roads were I live being a goddamn wasteland, these are gorgeous in comparison. Also, the campaign mirrors the progression of the manga, which managed to bring variety to a concept that could have otherwise gotten stagnant pretty fast: you start driving on your local mountain pass (first downhill, which is benefitial for you, then uphill, which might hinder your racing), then once you are familiar with the track, you have to go to a different region and track layout, then you battle against these chav motherfuckers with ponytails that drive a Lancer evo (4x4 gives them the upper hand), then it gets rainy, and so on. My favourite moment in the campaing (and the most epic) is when you have to race a guy in an incredibly narrow track that has lots of dry leaves on the sides of the road, making it hard to get a grip on certain sections, all the while there is a series of very intrincate downhill hairpins: like in the anime, you can just cheat and cut the corners short, literally dropping your car to the lower level on a very aggresive and spectacular way. In regards to the eurobeat, it's a matter of tastes, but even so, its one of those things that kinda work well in tandem. I wouldn't listen to it outside of the game or series, but its upbeat nature does blend with the gameplay style in a way no other music style could (save from Takenobu Mitsuyoshi's super-happy racing music). I hope I was able to make you understand why this racing series is so popular, and that I didn't get you bored, LOL.

Initial D drift Racer was a cracking film. Any proper car film enthusiast will appreciate Initial D more than the more popular Fast & Furious series. This game looks really good. An uncommitted half hearted effort from Sega. A reputation the brand has built for themselves now unfortunately.

Yeah Right. Because drift racer is a street racing movie and F& F a stupid Boddy and "We steal expansive cars" Hollywood Blockbuster... only with cars. Initial D Movie > F&F. Even the Wangnan movie.

Also, this may be totally useless (and downright suicidal), but during nighttime races you can turn your headlights off by keeping start pressed (a quick tap on start turns them on again)

this is totally useless against CPU (I guess),
but first time Takumi used it against me, I was kidna surprised. Still useless, as it's a racing game and thus the goal is to go faster instead of using the brake tho
...
