INFP & Skyline Drones - Aerial surveying for tectonic activity (Gorj, Romania)

Ғылым және технология

The earthquake sequence triggered in February 2023 in the Gorj County (Romania), with two significant events on 13 February (moment-magnitude Mw 4.8, at 18 km depth) and on 14 February (Mw 5.4, at 14 km depth), was the most powerful seismic episode ever recorded in this area. Main shocks were felt strongly in the epicentral area, causing damage to old buildings but also effects on the natural environment.
INFP and Skyline Drones undertook in May 2023 a aerial survey campaign of the Sohodol Gorge and Valea Mare zones, with the help of professional drones equipped with optical and Lidar sensors. Through the high resolution data obtained, researchers will identify the areas which were affected by the earthquakes and will obtain a detailed terrain and surface model.
Applications of this survey:
- the identification of unstable areas or areas which, although subjected to strong seismic motion, were not affected.
- the monitoring the modifications of the area in time, under the influence of important risk factors including the climatic ones.
- the identification of active faults in the area, even though these are not easy to spot at surface and data from other types of measurements needs to be added to the analysis.
The campaign proved the utility of drones in research but also search and rescue, revealing the new capabilities of INFP and Skyline Drones.
Used equipments consisted of:
Acecore Noa Drone with LiDAR YellowScan Vx20-300 System
DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise
