INFP and INFJ Interaction: One Letter Makes a Big Difference

A lot of people type themselves as INFJ/P, meaning they can't determine the last letter. We're here to show you the huge difference changing the last letter to either INFP or INFJ makes in this soft-spoken interaction between two introverts.

He is definitely an INFJ. Cool, calculated, and he is a good listener who accommodates the other persons personality. As an INFJ we are always adapting to everyone else’s personality because rarely are others so patient to allow us to get our full thoughts out. Since that frustrates us we try not to do that to other people.

One of the more interesting things I read regarding the different ways INFPs and INFJs access feeling is the idea that INFJs are able to feel another persons emotion while INFPs mimic. If an INPJ is in the same room as another person, they are literally able to take in the other persons emotions. They can feel their pain, sorrow, happiness is a very literal and genuine way. However, INFPs on the other hand replicate others emotions, and they do not have to be in the same room or in real time (art, movies, phone conversations for example are not in real time). INFPs, being that their dominant function is introverted feeling, have a very strong understanding of emotion and how it works, so when another person is feeling strongly, they will try to understand that emotion and find the closest similarity to something they themselves have felt in order to replicate and understand it.

I have strong mirror neurons though (if I see someone cry, I start leaking) and sense of empathy for example, if I thought of saying something hurtful to someone I would feel emotional pain.

The INFJ is trying so hard to be himself and not take up her emotions. Thank you so much!!! I know now that I am INFJ for sure. I could see the moments when he was thinking about how to create harmony while being true to himself. 0:13 he is already trying to figure out how to adapt to the situation (talking to a laptop). 0:39-1:00 He is thinking about how this video is going to go...he is thinking how can I make this successful for her by working with her personality and without making her feel like I am judging her when she already feels nervous and self-conscious. 4:18 He knows that he can stop worrying so much about how the interview is going to go. He knows she is trying to get him to be himself so he knows he is allowed to be himself. The rest of the interview he is really enjoying himself as he gets to know her and he funnily points out how he is going to start interviewing her. That is when you know an INFJ is really enjoying themselves! 14:25 you can see the sadness in his eyes. especially at 14:56 Just thinking about empathizing brings up emotion because it is such an integral part of an INFJ's life. So much so that it can be confusing, like is the emotion your own or someone elses? That is why INFJ's usually don't like crying in front of other people...they don't want other people to think they are sad when they aren't really sure if they are or if it is just a release of built up emotion of other people. This was such a good video!!

Which isn't a bad thing. :) Whereas, the INFJ maintains eye contact (or face contact since she bounces all the time) at all time. "INFJ is the most extroverted introvert" This has to do with that "chameleon" thing. Inside, I'm *still* an introvert, but outside, I'm *acting* like an extrovert, and I won't even realize after I've left the encounter that I was *acting* like an extrovert (for the sake of the person that needed it/because they needed me to be a certain thing). Jim the ENFJ might think of Tim the INFJ as ALSO being ENFJ, but Sarah (Tim's INFP girlfriend) would be confused if Jim told her Tim was an extroverted party animal, because she knows Tim as an *introvert* (who cuddles up with her and watches movies) without even realizing that Tim ducks out on Thursday movie nights because he feels stiffened without Jim the ENFJ and their weekly roller-disco mania (note: I am intentionally generalizing, your contextual experience may very). In my opinion, INFJs are actually probably one of (if not the most) "introverted" types (in the more traditional 21st century sense), but in the "heat of the moment" they can seem like the single *most* socially active types (not because they're *actually* both, but because they're capable of "feats" of 'psychological duality'). In my experience, *this process is not voluntary, and is what leads to months of close affection, followed by months of closed doors, because I did not realize I was accommodating others -- I have drained myself, and need to recharge*. The "hot and cold" thing that people take personally, without understanding (or appreciating) how much you go through just to interact with them like that (not to play the total victim, nobody asked us to be like that in the first place, or to do that for them -- it's all about coming to understand who you are, and your own needs).

Like if i find someone who is popular and im interested in, i can get to know them on a personal level and know their secrets. And we can get along very well. Its a gift, but it also attracts too much attention, because most of the time strangers would approach me and wanted to be my friend. Being a good actor, its easy for me to put on a mask and socialize. This is my first time responding, there has been a lot of stereotypes regarding infps, because most of the time we would just let things be and prefer not to confront or argue. My note here is that, there are infps out who are very outgoing and can make people attracted to them very easily :) It is something that can be trained through experience, again, only if you want it. Side note: after reading my comment again, i felt like deleting it and just let it pass. But nvm.

I think body language can be iffy when typing, because there could be an INFJ that will move around a lot too in certain moods. I think it becomes much easier to type INFP vs INFJ when you start observing the way they interact (the extroverted function) Ne vs Fe will be "seen" whereas, the dominant Fi and Ni is not seen.. An Ne user is very talented in bouncing non related ideas, very romanticized/artsy thought process I have noticed. An INFJ will be concerned with finding the meaning asap and using Fe as a tool to find the underlying meaning. Overall, NFs are going to be interested in similar things and found in similar places. Interests are commonly the same, they just have a different way of going about it. Love this channel!

I read a lot about the cognitive functions and I watch a lot of your video's and now I'm sure I'm an INFJ. It was just like I was sitting over there. And in this video's when I see the INFP (I'm sorry I don't know your name), I know I'm not an INFP. You are so different (not in a negative way) when I compare myself with you. I really like your video's, you're so funny!!

So as an infp-t I'll share a bit of the interaction: Speech : so what she's experiencing is that when we talk, it's like we've already imagined 5 different sentences and then is saying one out loud, but each word builds up a new thought, so while we're uttering each word we are both thinking about the sentence that we're soeaking as well as what else we can say or what could've been said, so we might switch our sentences in midway. That's why she said 'did you just noticed how many times I interrupted myself' we do that all the time because we are thinking of 10 possible thoughts and outcomes at the same time. Also we think of the pissible conclusion, like how a conversation would end, so let's just say a 10 line dialogue, 2 people are in the 2nd line, but in our head we have already imagined the 10th line so we will try to bring that conclusion in the 3rd line, this is why people find infp interaction so weird or over the head. And we tend to think from our perspective, yes we do feel other people, and see as a 3rd person but usually we think from our own space, so when we explain or talk about something we talk from our thinking perspective. That's why people might think we are self oriented (a bit true haha). Also as we think of possible outcomes, and tend to imagine the future, we use that imagination and conclusion in our speech, so people might feel a bit disoriented because it's hard to grasp where we are coming from. Empathy : I'm not gonna write the definition but just our feel on it. When we talk, we do sense others emotion, and we can sense it from both their perspective and our own perspective. It's like putting on their shoes, so it might get a bit personal for the infp's. So while we're working on people about empathy we talk from that feeling and sensing. Intuition pays a vital role as well. For the others it might be like watching a movie or from a 3rd persons perspective, that's who fj's work as amazing therapists or councillors. But for us we feel too personally that it effects us, it might leave a feeling behind in our mind, even after the actual person is relieved of it. Yes, because of this we can talk to them in a very deep level, and people trusts us for it. It feels good as well but at some point you might hate it, because most of the time, empaths or highly emotional or infp's can't control this ability, or can't raise a boundary, so we might feel like reaching a breaking point, it's like sucking up others emotion like a sponge, so the other person will feel relieved, you will also feel good by helping them but at a point you'll feel overwhelmed. A good practice and emotional boundary will help you, but it's hatd yo do because when we creat a wall we feel like we are not doing our duty, sometimes infp's convert themselves to other types, it takes time but it's possible. As we can see she said 'sometimes I wish I were a sociopath' yes, we do feel like that....feeling others all the time, helping and being overwhelmed or not helping feeling useless....it's a complex thing (just like he said)...but hey, practice and helping in a limit can help Good day

I wonder if Fi-Te is the reason why I did such weird things when I was little lol. Like when i was 7, I remember my half sister on the phone crying next to my mom because her grandmother was dying in the hospital. Young, naive me felt bad and wanted to help out so I grabbed my "Health science for kids" book and went over to my mom. I tried to ask her what disease my sister's grandma had so that I could cure it, but my mom had to turn me down. Little me felt awful and useless for a while... Similar thing happened a year later when I thought I could cure my friend's polio after learning that George Washington Carver treated polio with peanut oil. I called him up all excited and ready to help him finally run with all of our friends on the playground... Then his mom let me down gently... I cried . Felt especially terrible for getting his hopes up... Is this just young, sweet NFP naivety/madness? lol

ENFJ here :) I enjoyed this. Very well done in my opinion. I relate to what Alex had predicted where I present the emotion that I want to be seen and so if I do not want people to know I am upset, I hide it very well. But I have found that Fe auxiliary users have to usually learn this. I also literally feel people's emotions and I was so shocked when I learned about MBTI and I started reading that it was normal for my type. And yesssssss I hateeeeee being interrupted when I am speaking, and I also try to avoid interuptting others as they are speaking. I love the "one mic" rule where we take turns and all is orderly in discussion because it is polite (Fe) and also allows my thoughts to be fully fleshed out as well as fully intake what is being said by the other person (Ni). Great video! :D

Compassion vs empathy.. The common understandings of words and phraseology need to be surmounted in their ambiguity before any true meeting of conciousnesses takes place. I tend to associate Fi with compassion and Fe with the clinical definition of empathy. This is truly a delightful interaction to watch from this angle. How many others of the same nature, presented through the same basic method, can you really find on here?

The ending of this was really good. I always thought Fi = sympathy and Fe= empathy and I've never connected with that because I have Fe but I don't feel what others feel. Rather, I feel happy/sad/angry/worried for them very intensely. If someone is in pain, I can empathise but more than that, I'll just feel very, very stressed for them to the point that it can make me ill. To hear that this is more Fe than Fi is very validating.

I used to empathize all the time which was a problem. Now that I'm older I better manage things, but I spend most of my time alone so I am not exhausted from it anymore. I avoid certain things unless I am in a good frame of mind and emotionally charged situations will either make me walk away, shut down, or get ill (not completely ill like my bro who is an INFJ).

This is actually an aspect of my personality that I am struggling with now. I am finishing vet school and the one thing they hammer into us is empathizing with the client about their pet. I've never had that problem, but I am starting to realize I have the opposite problem. I had to perform my second euthanasia last week and although it was easier for me than the first (meaning I didn't bawl my eyes out in front of the owner), I still felt depressed the rest of the day. I feel I will have difficulty compartmentalizing my emotions in my first year out in practice :/

The person who is suffering might differ and every situation isn’t the same It’s not an automatic for me to jump in and rescue! It feels like you’re questioning your inner self of what you believe in and if this external value or whatever that empathy situation is, do have some sort of common understanding Maybe that external problem or the person can actually endanger me rather than really helps them! Interesting video. I think infjs also interrupt themselves, but more in a way to overclarify what they ultimately mean. It may seem tangential but there is harmony and reason behind it. I see this speach pattern a lot in infj youtubers and in myself. I do love your bursts of random inspiration that cause you to interrupt yourself though, it shows an active and beautiful mind, albeit a little more chaotic but nothing wrong with that since chaos is the natural order of things. Our affinity to writing shows a desire to tame that imaginitive beast within. I am infj but i think i move around a lot in conversation, but it is mostly nodding/other head movements and lots of hand gestures.

I was tested positive to an INFJ personality type but watching this video, it made me question my test because although a lot of my qualities match with the INFJ in this video, some of my qualities match with the INFP in this video as well. I am the nervous type and I do have ADHD which means I tend to move around but only when i'm nervous. My speech isn't very well thought out because I have speech problems and I stutter a bit but I can't tell if that has to do with my personality type or it's just my speech impediment. It's all very confusing now. I guess I'll just trust my test because these are just 2 people out of thousands of others who have the same personality type and many of them have different versions of a certain personality type to fit to their liking and just who they are as a person. My mother told me that while a lot of my qualities do fit with an INFJ, I still have to consider the fact that I am a child of an alcoholic and that that can OF COURSE affect a persons personality.

I'm infp. I have "tested" as intp, tj, fj. Basically, I think people vary even if they fall in one category. Personality and life experience and more certainly alter this. For instance in categories of autistic children I've worked with they were all completely completely different individuals who happen to all be autistic. And even their autism traits varied individually. That's what makes this all so weird. I guess in some terms, it's best to keep an open mind. Love can be found not necessarily in a mbti type set either. I'm infp. And, sometimes I think esfj would be a best match. They're the only ones that ever seem.....to have the right balance down with their interactions with people. Authentic too.

I am an INFJ, but I can see myself behaving like the INFP in this video (only when I'm comfy with someone or I'm high on caffeine). 😁 I also have a quite developed Si (past past past and can't easily move on from a freaking relationship -- and my attachment to things and people in my past is ridiculous) , but my Ni is a lot more dominating most of the time. Si and Ni at the same time is a warzone inside of me andAnd oh man, Ni-Ti loops are going to kill me either by being so detached from my environment leading me to get hit by a truck, or by getting me so worried and lead me down to depression. My Fe annoys me at times since it almost always seems like I could never truly express my emotions in a group setting just because I have to individually consider every single one in a group. Plus, it is such a bummer when I start a day on a great note, only to arrive somewhere and "feel" someone's sadness and you can't help but feel sad as well, or someone is pissed off and it rubs off on you thus making you feel a little bit crabby. I always see myself as a social chameleon -- I can be anything and anyone, depending on what the situation needs, eventhough it'll eventually kill me by the end of the day. And I know I'm mumbling too much, but it is rare to find a video in here that resonates deeply with me. That being said, I still am doubting whether I truly am an INFJ or not, I see INFPs and ISFJs and I find a lot of things that I can relate to with these two. 😊

Thank you for recommending this cognitive functions test! It is really helpful! I tried it myself and now I realize why I have mistyped myself as an INFJ for so long! I have pretty well developed Ni, Fe, and Ti (which I use more than Te xD) which are cognitive functions used by INFJs! No wonder I relate to INFJs so much because I can understand how they think because I use similar cognitive functions sometimes! But, the test said the pattern of my answers fits more closely with the INFP personality type because I use Fi the most out of all of my cognitive functions and I have very well developed Ne and Si! I just need to work on my Te, I'm not very strong in that cognitive function xD The test said that I use the Te cognitive function the least out of all of my cognitive functions xD Do you have any tips on how I can practice using my Te cognitive function so that I can develop it more? ^^

INTJ & INFP Coffee Thanks for that! My results somewhat baffled me a tiny bit. Ofcourse it still came up as an INFJ with Ni and Fe at the forefront. It appears as if I have quite a few often used functions as well -- that is probably why I can relate myself to some other types. My first MBTI test came up ISFJ about 6 years ago, and now I can see why. 😊

INFP: Again, I don't know if I buy socionics, but according to that, we use 4 functions well and 4 functions poorly, as opposed to 2 and 6, which might explain your test results. And Angelica, Te is a challenge for me as well! Ask an ExTJ xD

INTJ & INFP Coffee Vim C Interesting! I'll have to look into socionics! I've never looked into it! It sounds interesting! I think it might be possible to use most of the functions really well! Which might lead people to feeling like they can't identify with just one type and they might mistype themselves a lot! Haha xD You understand!! Te is a tough cognitive function to develop for us INFPs!! xD Great idea haha! I'll have to ask an ENTJ! They are amazing at Te!

Watching this was so helpful!! I was confused because of C. S. Josephs way of comparing the two(i know im infp but he almost made me doubt my type again) . I think he has used way too much Ti and has developed his own system but still uses names from the MBTI one and particularly for INFP/J i believe he has the two types either flipped around or entirely wrong. Would be interested to see what you think of his take on the topic o: but ya he seems to look at behaviours caused by use of functions but only based on where the function is in your cognitive stack and not on how it interracts with your dominant function which is the "driver" from what ive seen in classical MBTI theory. Im not sure but there is something inherently wrong in how he types people and I think its causing confusion for many people since his channel is so big.

8:00 I am an INFJ and I was suprised when I read that "being manipulative" is my type's ability. I hate manipulation, I spot manipulative people very easily and door slam them before they start talking to me. I can not remember any situation when I consiously tried to manipulate somebody. Though, what I noticed in myself is that when I accidentally say something I didn't want to say, I have no problem to make it "unimportant" in other people's minds so they stop paying attention and forget what I just said. Is that a manipulation? I just help their thoughts go in other direction.

I was called out on this once as I too dislike manipulation. Something I do though is calm others' anxiety in a very purposeful way. I will shift the way I'm speaking, the words im using and how I'm interacting to in a sense, control and guide the other person into a calm less anxious space. I've always thought of this as a very positive quality and ability of mine, but in fact this is manipulation. I do this for the greater good, and also so I feel more comfortable.

INFJ forgetting is like a supertalent. If I don't interact with someone for a few years, I am likely to forget about them altogether. This frees up operating space so that I can focus on how to reshape the world to a fairer and better space for us all. I hardly remember much of my life. My brother reminds me of things I don't remember myself, or maybe he was with somebody else? The past is gone. You can't change it, and you can't live there. But you can enjoy the music!

I am very much an INFP (96% Introverted; 59% Intuitive*; 76% Feeling*; 71% Prospecting; 61% Assertive- *'s have dropped as I've aged, while "I" increased). I'm also Enneagram 9w1; EII/IEI; the "Sage" lol). I barely move and relate MUCH more to the man (getting a "sense" of people). I think before speaking and am frustrated BEYOND frustrated when people interrupt me. But I do have her tangents rofl. Thoughts make me think of other things, which leads me in another direction, then another and another until I forget what I was originally talking or thinking about rofl. I'm just 5 1/2 minutes in. She seems either VERY nervous or very "E". I'm upbeat and optimistic, but I wish I had just a portion of her energy :D The audio is not very good at all, though. **EDIT** By her facial expressions, I DO experience some similar things as her: "Spit it out already! :D " While I dilly and dally while speaking, I prefer others to just get on with it and "use their words". (Ironically, my hubby always says that to me rofl) She seemed impatient for him to explain things. Another thing. I am HIGHLY empathetic. Like him, I'll catch a glimpse of someone and then have a sort of knee-jerk reaction to what I perceive their emotions to be. Yeah, that's the "P" coming out. Like her, I then try to rationalize the initial intuition. I also wonder if I'm more empathetic because I'm also HSP? Enjoyed the video. You have a new subscriber :)

I can't decide which one I am because I literally act like both, it just depends on my mood which mode I am in, more personally expressive or more observant and supportive of whomever I'm interacting with. I can't say which mode feels more natural. They both feel natural when I'm doing them.

INFPs and INFJs are so awesome and different from the rest if the world I also can read people very well and empathize with them and we always want to help others and sometimes we INFPs like to just stay silent and just listen in order to help. We just like to be there with the person not trying to change there views and experiences but just to be there with them in that time and place and let them know there not alone. I would like to hear how an INFJ feels about that and how they like to help others in there own unique INFJ way.
