InFocus: President Xi's invitation to young Americans bearing fruit

Nearly two months after Chinese President Xi Jinping invited 50,000 young Americans to visit China over the next five years, the city of Qingdao in Shandong Province is hosting 10 students from California State University, Long Beach. The group is part of the first wave of U.S. students to China, following President Xi's invitation during the APEC meeting in California in November. What is the significance of such visits? How can groups of young people contribute to the development of China-U.S. relations? Why is emphasis placed on the future lying with today's youth? Bearing these questions in mind, CGTN reporter Huang Yichang set out on a journey in Qingdao with these young Americans.

I have met a young couple in Thailand recently. They were from US and they were traveling from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and then to Cambodia and Vietnam and before going back to US. We have happened to have a casual friendly conversation and I have asked them since they are so near to China, why not go to China just for a few days to see China. I told them China is very interesting. But I was surprised of what they've told me. They said, according to all their media reports in US and advice by their government and many people. They were advice and told not to travel to China. Even their parents don't allow them to go to China. They were told China is not a safe country to travel. Very dirty, poor rundown infrastructures, poor transportation system, polluted, homeless people are everywhere waiting to rob tourists are common even in broad daylight. Chances of been detained for no reason by the Communist is very high. Because China is an authoritarian state and all foreign visitors are monitored by thousands of cameras everywhere, every minute where foreign visitors go. Foreign visitors from western countries can be detained for months or even years for no reason. All these is what they know about China. The couple is like below 25 years of age and already so badly brainwashed by their government and controlled media. This is really sad.

Many young people have open minds and a curiosity to explore the world beyond their own. In contrast, there are politicians like Senator Mark Rubio of Florida, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Presidential candidate Nikki Haley who make outlandish statements about China without ever having set foot in the country. It's wise of Xi to invite these enthusiastic and curious youths from all over the world. 1:54 China is the worlds biggest economy not the United States anymore. Nominal gdp is rly being held onto by the western economies to make them appear relatively larger than they really are. Besides purchasing power, using nominal dollar gdp to compare the US economy to Chinas is a rly poor metric given that China devalues its yuan so it won’t represent the true value of the economy when it’s converted to dollars. Adding to this artificial discrepancy the US economy is inflated atm with a nominal gdp that is substantially higher than its real gdp which takes inflation into account

Must be there to see and feel the beautiful culture and mega infrastructure with high technology incorporated into it. No other countries in the world can showcase close to her achievements. The Western Democracy are painfully envious of how a communist country had in a few decades, transformed into a magnificent dragon of successful endeavors. The Western and US greedy US hegemony will never want to face this reality of humiliations. Modern China is true Democracy.

As an Australian, 26 year old me wants to move to China or Russia. I’ve had business relationship with Chinese Factories. I admire the people of China, work ethic and creativity is unbelievable. Everyone is Australia hates China due to Western Propaganda. It’s stupid. Question though; how wheelchair friendly is it? The city’s are advanced so I assume it’s great?

that's wisdom, it is difficult to convince old americans, so they focus on future. The youth of both sides need to be positive on each other.

The message "Future lies on the youth" is so pure and non-political. That's the true spirit of friendship - something US seems unable to provide due to jealousy. But it is a good sign that, at least, US allows this event to happen

Seeing is believing, the world is really big and there are better ways to doing things. There are places that are actually better than here in many respect, much much better in some respect. I learned that as an expat 20 yrs ago. What an exciting country that never sleeps and slow down!

I’m very pleased to see these types of trips by students. What great experiences for the young people. Not just to China, but trips to all countries of the world. Because the future does lies with the youth. Growing up in a western country, I was always afraid of China and Russia and never wanted to visit either country. As a student, I was taught that communist countries are brutal and bad; coupled with all the negative propagandas from MSM. My parents and grandparents said that these countries are not as bad as the western countries painting them to be and that I should visit the countries to see and experience myself. So, while I was in college, I had an opportunity to visit China and Russia. It really was an eye opening experience for me. There really was nothing to be afraid of. The people, especially the young people in these countries are just like the youth of my country. We all want the same things. I made life long friends without prejudice. I have also hosted them in my country.

if we sow mutual respect, curiosity, understanding and learning form each other, we will reap love and harmony. if we sow arrogance, distrust, ignorance and prejudice, we will reap hatred and conflicts. for the world, it is THE choice of our time. it is not just every country and its government will have to make this choice, in the end the choice is up to us, every individual, we will have to make our own personal choice, and our collective choice will determine the future.

I think conflating typical American enthusiasm(over enthusiasm) and uber positivity with them thinking every aspect of China is impressive is mistaken. China has invested greatly in improving their country so there is a new-ness and a shiny-ness that America lacks.
