This was extremely helpful. You pointed out so many reasons not to get a bark collar, and really encouraged me to weigh whether the benefits would outweigh the costs. In my case, there are times I want my dog to alert me to possible problems using his bark; just not all the time (like when a neighbor is just jogging past our back yard.) So I'll just use a martingale and a long line to try to teach him not to bark in a "no threat" situation and won't use a bark collar which would instill in him a fear of barking in each and every situation. Thanks!

This video was very helpful! I started the day thinking I needed a shock collar. While researching which shock collar would work best, I discovered bark collars and was thinking they would be a better fit. After watching other videos and now yours, I don’t think I need either right now. I need to understand why my dog is barking before I try to correct her. Thank you for your knowledge!

Glad I watched this before getting a bark collar. I want him to alert us if someone is around so I don’t think it’s a good fit. How do you recommend dealing with demand barking? He can get worked and play for hours but still yap/bark to continue playing once we go inside. 10mo GSD

Correction you can control. A bark collars is an auto correct. If it’s demand barking, the correction should come from you, so he understands it’s not “barking” that is getting him the correction, but rather the demanding.

There are enough with remote control and where you can turn off automatic settings. You will need good timing and correct situational.

Thank you for this video. My dog primarily barks in two situations: 1. She sees the neighbor's dogs outside and she is barking because she wants to go over there and play, 2. She sees a deer or other critter in our yard at night and she is trying to scare it off. Do you think a bark collar is appropriate in these situations? Thanks!

It’s hard to tell. Too many variables and I don’t know your situation. I would contact a trainer who can work with you.

How young can I use a bark collar on a dog or pup? Any age younger than 6 months is not recommended??

  • @dogtrainingismypassion

There are just too many factors that go into making the choice to use a bark collar, age is just one of them. I would say a bark collar, depending on the situation of course, might consider 6 months to probably be too young. NOT because the bark collar is this evil tool many people think it is, but because they’re likely to make wrong associations in their youth.

This was very helpful! I was considering getting a bark collar for my dog but I've learned from this that it really might not be necessary at all, and might just distress him! I always thought all bark collars were made to only correct barks rather than all sounds. If I do end up considering a bark collar though, I'll be sure to look into the one you reccomended! I'd be much more willing to get one that has different levels and only corrects continuous barking instead of correcting every sound it picks up. Thanks for the information! 🩵

We have a Husky and we place him in his crate when we leave the house. He is good but after awhile he will start to bark and howl. What is your recommendation?

It’s really hard to tell as I don’t have enough information on your dog. I don’t know if it’s frustration or anxiety. Different issues could call for different approaches. Best route would be for you to get in touch with someone local to you.

Uh, we have a beautiful dog that barks at house guests. loves some barks at others, one day with bark collar, immediate results. Whatver side effect, we will take it, she actually sat down and chilled and it was a lot less stressful than her sitting under the bed barking.

I have a gsd, after a morning walk and play for around hour and 15-30 mins, i put him in a cage because he will run and bark to some ppl and dogs on the fence. But then he barks in the cage. I play with him again 2 times for 30 mins before letting him sleep but in a closed room. Then walk again and sleep overnight. The main reason i put him in the cage is because of the running barking kunging on the fence. A dog trainer gave me a dog collar. I dont really want to use it but he is 2 years old and idk if i can teach him not to run and bark unless someone touches the fence. Also he is triggered by sound most of the time. He has remembered the sounds (some gate opening, car engine starting...) and walk of people and reacts on them P.s. he gave me dogtra ys500
