Not sure if this feedback will ever get back to LTT, but even though you may not liked the AMD video, and it may not perform that well, I found it incredibly useful. As someone new and wanting to build my own PC for the first time, you don’t know what you don’t know. This video opened my eyes to the ridiculous marketing tactics even in naming. Maybe in 5 or 10 years I will be numb to the subject, but as someone new to this world, I found it incredibly useful and fascinating. Like Luke said you don’t have to do it all the time, but I think it was valuable. Thank you.

As a senior developer, I've been pushed into management in every position I've held. If you're a good developer, you're always suddenly expected to manage other developers, when all you want to do is just write code. It reminds me a of bit from the late Mitch Hedberg: "When you're in Hollywood and you're a comedian, everybody wants you to do other things. All right, you're a stand-up comedian, can you write us a script? That's not fair. That's like if I worked hard to become a cook, and I'm a really good cook, they'd say, "OK, you're a cook. Can you farm?"

  • @viv12348

I think it depends on a team. If you work in a big team, then it would eventually be split and someone will have to manage. If your team is small and relatively unchanging for years, you have a manager and there us no reason to have another developer be a manager

About AI.... I don't think it's really that surprising that the average Joe doesn't care. Being able to DJ a song is cool, but how often will I do that? AI editing a photo is cool, but how often do I edit photos? Writing a novel with AI is cool, but I barely have time to game. What I want (and I think average consumers want) is Star Trek. I want to tell my house I'm going to sleep and have it tell me "good night" while it turns off my lights for me. That's about it. I am personally interested in about 2% of the other AI features out there. I just don't care for AI in my life beyond that Edit: and I'm in IT... I literally support this crap as a profession, and 98% is utterly stupid

Yeah, same for me, main reason why people actually cared about Apples AI keynote is because they were the only ones talking about how AI will be unobtrusively integrated in stuff you are already doing. Just connecting some dots in the background, making clever suggestions, better voice control, quick editing for images, that sort of stuff. Not a fanboy, I just think they are on the right track

  • @nathangarvey797

@@Rohinthas I partially agree and partially disagree. I agree that Apple is MORE on the right path with regards to integrating AI into normal life. However, I also find the thought of my personal device watching and learning from me to be creepy. And I don't think that I am that unusual. (Note: one of my phones *is* an iPhone, so not counter-fanboying here). Speaking with my extended family and friends (and this is highly anecdotal and should be taken with copious amounts of salt), most people seem to use their mobile devices to consume their life only, and don't really want AI filtering what they see, and certainly not making decisions for them. Beyond that "Star Trek" factor. I just don't think a lot of AI will ultimately be successful long term. At least not in my little circle in the wider world. You Mileage Will undoubtedly Vary.

I have the same mentality, i work for a living and i would love to have a creative job where im not sore every day. Im not saying a creative job isn't challenging or difficult it's completely different to the "average" person who works 8 to 10 hours helping people or working manual labor and AI cannot help me with that. Like you put i dont DJ i dont write a book everyday and i dont really need artwork. I like home automation and AI could assist but a light switch is currently more convenient than my phone (google home).

@@nathangarvey797 yes, you are raising an important point. The creep-factor is there for me too. I guess by "the right path" I am referring to the immediate user experience and not so much the overarching question of whether I want some technical device to predict and alter my behavioral patterns. I probably delude myself into it "being fine" because the models are said to be run the device and not in the cloud, so it is *just* my phone knowing me a little too well, but I think we all know that this could come to an end really quickly or only be true for some parts of the data. And it doesnt change the fact that an algorithm is steering more and more minor details of my everyday life. I wonder how much people will care though if Apple manages to hide most of the AI magic in already existing apps/features. Its not a perfect analogy, but the social media algorithms becoming more and more user-specific in their recommendations has not stopped the userbase from growing, if anything only the enshittification through ads and promoted content has put a dampener on it.

12:30 Luke, This is in the Elon Musk biography: apparently he used to have issues with his Tesla car that couldn’t deal with the missing lane marking on his daily commute. The engineers tried everything to fix it, but the car still wouldn’t manage it. In the end they decided that they would hire a machine and fix the lane marking on their own, but in the end they managed to get it fixed by the city. I found this story kinda hilarious for many reasons, but the point is that it was always about fixing Elon’s experience rather than the product.

My first job after graduating college for computer networking was just selling bell internet and TV. shit job to begin with but in training the trainer said one of the reasons bell internet is the best is because of their dynamic IP system helps people not get hacked, your IP address is changing all the time! 51:35 Sure, you have roles in entertainment and whatnot but you also have a really important role in advocacy when it comes to the tech landscape (and especially when it comes to things that take advantage of consumers). God knows consumers don't vote with their wallets, so I think LTT and other media channels have a role as somewhat of a focal point to both bring awareness to bad things that companies do as well as to put pressure on those companies in a way that individual consumers can't/won't. You already do this in certain areas when it comes to advertisers and content you decide to feature on the channel, but as a spokesperson for the tech community, your responsibility towards advocacy doesn't *just* extend to those you engage in business with. You could certainly view those videos as being "mad and cranky," but I view it more as putting attention on things that might need it the most. Cool tech is cool tech, and I'm glad it's remained the most predominant content on the channel, but sometimes it's the bad parts of tech that actually require the most coverage. If spokespeople like you don't call out these companies/industries for what they do, it just makes it easier for them to do it in the future-*ESPECIALLY* for marketing campaigns like those you covered in the CPU video. Those campaigns are considered successful when they successfully manipulate consumer perspectives, and thus it's important to remind people about it (i.e. to *complain about it*) to help mitigate their efficacy. So, I hope you keep doing that. Call attention to how everyone hates the AI marketing fluff, and how companies construct narratives for reviewers, and how AMD/Intel are intentionally making their products more confusing. Negativity shouldn't ever dominate the channel, but the alternative of avoiding the most important and systemic practices feels insincere at best and neglectful at worst.

The vibes about the hobby are extra depressing this episode, but felt. Back in ye olde days when I was getting interested in tech, I remember lusting over computers on this channel & settling for a half height 750ti slapped in an Optiplex. A decade on, a lot of the folks I talk to during my office hours don't have desktops, just laptops - you'd think CS folks have would be into it, but it's just not practical. All hobbies fade to a certain extent until they become sufficiently retro to sustain a cult following. If modular desktops go the way of the dinos, I bet it'll boomerang in 10 years or so afterwards. Fingers crossed for Ampere to pull it off. Anyways, thanks for the great content as always.

I think a lot of people like the idea of modularity because you can buy mid tier now and upgrade to a higher spec within the tier later on, it's just by the time most people come to upgrade, parts hit the point in their lifecycle that they've seen all the discounts they ever will and then prices have been jacked up again as if it's some kind of legacy component so it ends up cheaper to do a full platform upgrade

I feel that going to one channel as a one-stop-shop for reviews are just looking at reviews incorrectly. I think Josh's way to look at battery life is justified, especially for his audience. Whereas for me, I'm doing really basic stuff with mild workloads here and there. I'll look at both of their videos for info. Is either perfect or all encompassing, hell no, but it doesn't have to be. People also really need to know who to look for reviews. If I really like apple and I go to MKBHD, I kind of already align my thoughts with him. If I go to LTT to have thoughts on Apple, I may have a bad time. Like, I'm not going to go to a person who hates JRPGs review a JRPG, that's nonsense. I really do think the consumers here and on Josh's channel really need to improve their review shopping game.

So, 2-3 meter chimney around the radiator will (likely) provide enough drag to cool the system, that is my theory.

As a developer, while I generally agree with this, I still think it’s useful to have at least 1 layer of buffer between the customer and the developers. I do agree that it shouldn’t be outsourced to another company, it should be something in-house. Ideally, those customer support people would be well trained to help customers, and have some level of technical knowledge to know what is and isn’t worth bringing to the devs. In my ideal, they would just note done things to bring to devs, then like once of twice a week they bring the list to the devs (and potentially recordings of the calls/emails that made them write that down), but that might be a bit much.

  • @koalaking3057

That might depend on how that encryption is implemented. If the entire database is encrypted as one unit, or even the tables each encrypted as single units, the yeah you would need to decrypt everything to do a simple search. But if you only encrypt the value in each column individually, one way to handle it would be to encrypt your search terms, so you find the matching encrypted value, then only decrypt the information returned. It’s still more CPU overhead with constant encryption/decryption, you just don’t necessarily have to decrypt *everything* to do a search.

So my advice is not to buy anything from Moza, nor from/via Rseat, and certainly not from Hardware Experts (Bram Nijk and Jorgo Rino, in particular, are the worst kinds of ppl)

Bram Nijk and Jorgo Rinu from Hardware Experts, those at Rseat, France and Germany, and Moza China failed miserably. It should reasonably only take a few weeks, the tech in a brake pedal is no rocket science and would be an easy fix or replacement. And the same problem happened to many many others, Moza''s brake pedals (all models) had the same problem for years, they could have corrected/ redesigned it but they did not. But I'm happy for you you have not had that common problem, and perhaps your retailer is one with a moral backbone and Rseat is also not in the loop on your side. When it works it is great, but the proof is that when things go wrong how good the service then really is, and for me, it was really, really bad.

You have the car data and an extra visual representation of the problem with a vocal commentary to explain what they don't like about the way it acted. The only problem i would have is if it was to the exclusion of other data inputs.

There are legitimate reasons for leaning on Elon's data (or for that matter anyone on the team) harder. He was using it first, more, for longer. He gives more feedback and gives it accurately and directly to the right people in the team. It's much easier to fix, test and iterate on internal data than data from anywhere else. He can test unreleased fixes and updates before anyone else can. If he's using it every day and it keeps missing the same stop sign you don't think they should be able to fix that ? The same cannot be said about random youtubers and influencers though. Unless they have a special arrangement with them that gives their data some of the same advantages as internal data.

Given the state of waymo and all the other automakers giving up on FSD, Tesla is the only real player in this space. Also the influencer thing is not that scandalous as one might perceive it to be. How is it any more different than waymo selecting certain routes to operate?

If you think Tesla is the only real player in FSD, you didn’t look at what automakers are doing to get perspective. You’re biased toward Tesla, clearly. Everyone else is doing the research to advance FSD, but everyone else isn’t beta testing their partial self driving on all of their cars. Other automakers are only releasing specific levels of driving assistance and not calling it autopilot or FSD.

  • @sjwright2

@@robertp457 I know what other automakers are doing. None of the US or Euro automakers are doing serious development on systems comparable to FSD. Ford and GM were, but have since abandoned these efforts. There are a number of Chinese automakers developing FSD-like systems, to varying degrees of success. Comma OpenPilot deserves an honourable mention, though it's not really attempting to be an FSD competitor. True city street driving is a gargantuan mountain of edge cases. There's no alternative to collecting data from hundreds of millions of real-world miles on real-world roads, and no serious researcher says otherwise. Tesla is "beta testing" FSD with customers because it's literally the only (economically feasible) way to get enough data to make it work.

It's not disingenuous. This is how all large software programs are developed. Software developers give beta testers new versions first and so long as it's working better than the last public release, it's released to regular customers. Tesla's regular customers get the exact same software as early access testers. Conflating this with the "Golden Sample" scam is just bizarre.

There are plenty of people posting videos of their FSD drives to KZread who aren't part of the early access program. And their experience seems to be pretty much identical to the experience of the so called "influencers", for a given version of the software. FSD definitely works better in some cities than in others, but this is becoming noticeably less true with every release. That's the opposite of what you'd expect if Tesla engineers were over-fitting the training data for Elon's personal routes. (When looking at a KZread video of FSD in action, you need to factor in whether the video is showing "everyday" driving or if they're explicitly looking for the most difficult situations. Some do the former, but most so-called "influencers" scour their local area for roads which expose limitations in FSD because anything else is boring.)

So about all of that encryption stuff at 2:50:01 . You could either encrypt the data with a master key or with the user password. Using a master key is not super helpful. You need it at so many places, that it should be trivial to find once you have access to the database. And even if it isn't trivial it is just another small layer between hackers and the data. Using the user password would actually help, because then you could only access this data if the user is logged in. But that has a multitude of problems: 1. Encryption your mail You can't, if you ever want your user to be able to reset their passwords. It's encrypted by their password, so yeah... It's kinda a chicken and egg problem here. 2. Encrypting your address If you placed an order your address has to be put somewhere. The only way would be for it to be printed immediately and handled by humans. Otherwise it has to be saved in some order queue and if you can read the main database the order database should be just around the corner. The user account and orders also have to be connected somehow, so again it would be absolutely trivial to connect the two and still have your address. Yes it would narrow down the scope of attacks because order can be eventually deleted, but if you want to maintain any type of customer service you need to access some of the data without user interaction (e.g. if something goes wrong with your order). 3. Customer support If you call support you would have to hand out your password so that they could read your account data, which they probably need to help you. It would make the process so much more frustrating and customer support can be annying already. This would make it so much worse. 4. Debugging As someone who needs to debug things that include redacted/encrypted customer data I can tell you how much it sucks right now. It's stupidly time consuming sometimes. It is absolutely necessary in many ways, and I'm really glad, that a lot fo data is encrypted, but every bit you encrypt furter will makes debugging and actually finding problems in system much, much, much worse. All in all it is a nice though, but just not practical. It's more expensive, time consuming and annoying for customers and developers. Is it possible in some scenarios? Absolutely. Should it be standard? Probably not and probably can't be.
