influencers are lying to you // tiktok's 'that girl' trend is toxic

We don't need to wake up at 5am. The 5am club is toxic. KZreadrs are lying to us. The that girl trend is fake. An influencer failed to sell 36 shirts. Is the era of influencers finally over? Why wake up at 5am when you can SLEEP?
hi besties, I'm Fauxhad and today we're discussing influencers, the 5am club, toxic tiktok trends and... dirty river water. Influencers peddle this idea that waking up at 5am is good for you. But you know what's better? Getting 8 hours of sleep.
Today's case study: an influencer with 2 million followers failed to sell 36 shirts. Is this a sign that the age of influencers is finally over?

Doing shit you absolutely don't want to do every day isn't self care. I don't run, I lift. I do it at 8pm, not am. I eat broccoli and spinach smoothies. I also quite enjoy a burger and brownie. Self care is balancing what you want and what you need in the way that makes you happiest

Actually, i used to be "that girl" and ironically that was when my mental health was at its best. I think a lot of it can be attributed to the sleeping early, exercising regularly and eating healthy though. I really enjoyed this perspective and i definitely agree that its a lot harder for someone with a 9-5 than a student to achieve that type of life, and that it is unreasonable to have this become a standard :0

Yeah, I was literally so happy even though I was sleeping 4 hours a night, not sustainable but I was always in a good mood, like I have class at 8 and volunteering at 1 and I’ll be home by 6 and then I have a quiz the following day so I’ll get my workout in at 5:30 , I was like too busy to feel sad and I was making so many new friends

I was 'that girl' for a while and what I learned is that some of the habits really improved my life and mental health, but the mindset behind it made me miserable. The mindset behind it makes a huge difference. Instead of seeing everything as steps you need to cross of your checklist and dont even like, really see it as gaining habits that are good for you and will make you happier in the long term. Instead of waking up at 5 am, working out, meditating, journaling and having 10 health supplements etc, I started looking at what made me feel fulfilled and truly helped me. For me that became waking up between 7 and 8, drawing, sleeping earlier and meditating a few times a week when I feel like it, instead of seeing it as something I must do to not fail in life. Same for workouts, I dont even like working out. I walk after my workday and go to a workout class once a week. It's made me much happier and it fits into my work schedule.

I think capitalism has really engrained these ridiculous ideals in us (e.g. productivity/successful career etc.) and whilst it does impact most people's view of what success means, I think it's typically a young person thing because the older you get the less fucks you give and you realise that work kinda sucks sometimes. Even if you're a top solicitor/doctor etc. a lot of your daily tasks are actually quite mundane or you might have a difficult boss or colleague. We get so wrapped up in what people 'do' for work but my parents couldn't care less about jobs and it never comes up in conversation with their friends. It's cool because their friends have all taken such different routes in life the older they got so some stopped working entirely when they had kids or went part time, some work in high paying corporate jobs and others are part time school secretaries and nobody bats an eyelid. As young people we learn within a few months to a year that our jobs are not at all the perfect image we've been sold our whole lives but we feel this need to portray to our friends and the outside world that we're successful as if we're not all out here answering emails/photocopying/managing spreadsheets (just giving office work as an example). Even the most fulfilling careers can get monotonous and I feel like when you truly accept that work is just work and you don't care what others think of you, it's pretty liberating because the capitalist mentality no longer has a death grip on you. I think this only comes to most people in your 30's/40's. I'm only 26 and whilst I understand all of this in theory, I still struggle with fully letting go of how others perceive my job. (I'm just a legal & finance executive for the public health body in Ireland so I'm essentially admin support.)

Oh gosh you've hit the nail on the head!! It's absolutely a young person thing to obsess about the perception of our jobs (it kinda starts from school: we get taught to value high grades... for what?! So we can get into a good University then get a good job???) Literally every job I've ever had includes some sort of monotonous aspect where I stop and think, "why am I even doing this?" I've had to start making a conscious effort to stop making my entire personality based on work and instead focus on all the other amazing things available in life. I used to be SO terrified of losing my job that I legitimately wouldn't be able to sleep. Now I'm like, well... if I did lose my job, who cares? There's so much other incredible things I could do instead. Thank you for sharing your story and for watching! 🥰

Just let the irony of "that girl" set in. They all have this very productive schedule plotted out in 15 minute increments before 8am, and their followers have a very non-productive schedule of staring at their phones watching "that girl" videos in 15 minute increments. Their success is antithetical to anyone taking their advice.

The "that girl" thing is depressing. At least for me. Like I see all these perfect people out there, with their self love etc. And then I'm here in my room, being exhausted because I had to eat with my family for 2 weeks (once a day) because my grandpa died and we need to help my grandma and I didn't even cry that much, which makes no fucking sense, because I have depression and I usually cry because of litteraly everything. This trend is like hustle culture for teenagers.

I start every one of my days by waking up at 6am, doing yoga, and meditating - and I can promise my life is still a trainwreck lol. The good habits help a lot but it's so disingenuous to say any one way of living will "fix" your life/problems. Find the things that make you feel content, happy, and interested and recognize there will always be things you wish were different and practice accepting that tension.

I think the difference is whether or not these routines are made for the aesthetics, from the desire to fit in, because you think it will make you cool, or if you actually believe that these habits will help you manage your life better. I like waking up early because it gives me more time to get ready. I hate being late and I hate rushing so it helps me manage my anxiety. And working out, regardless of when it happens, is good for both physical and mental health. The pandemic ruined a lot of routines, and for me personally, the gym closing and my dance rehearsals being canceled crushed me. Those routines are really important, ngl. But again, non of those things should be for instagram or tiktok likes/views.

I work late shifts and overnight shifts so most of the time, whenever I’m not at work, I’m most likely asleep. If I’m getting home at 8am, I’m sleeping until 4pm so there’s very little time for me to incorporate a lot of things into my schedule because I’ve got such a small window of time before I have to get ready to go to work again. Being a working adult is hard, and “that girl” routines aren’t always available to everyone.

I think it goes deeper than if I’m productive, then I’m successful, and that makes me happy. I think it’s more about staving off a lot of complicated emotion that comes up during quiet, unstructured time. It’s a peculiarly flimsy self-delusion, that is constructing an online persona that others admire and aspire to be, while cultivating a deeper, only half-acknowledged hollowness within the self that berry bowls and beach pics for Instagram can’t solve.

i can't speak for everyone, but some people actually mean no harm. sometimes waking up 30 mins earlier in the morning and putting effort into your breakfast instead of skipping it, will make you feel better. meditating and exercising are both really beneficial, does it matter when you workout/meditate? im not sure but a lot of people tend to feel better when they workout first thing in the morning. the only unrealistic part of this is your whole life being "aesthetic" it's hideous. if something resonates with you, do it. if it doesn't, keep moving & stop comparing your life to others. you're doing great.

I think that this trend is actually improving more lives than it is ruining so I cannot agree very much with this video. Speaking for myself, and I have also seen in the comments the same thing, that "that girl" trend actually improved their lives and mental state. I was also "that girl" except it was more than 2 years ago when I started implementing all the healthy habits in my life when no such trend existed (I think? Idk). My mental state was so much better when I did yoga, meditation, journaling and stuff like that every day and woke up early. Now I have a been on pause for almost 4 months with all of that but I really want to get back into this routine and tbh this trend, morning routine videos and stuff like that I find quite inspiring and motivational. I really think the world would be a better place if everyone implemented more healthy habits in their life especially meditation, physical activity and good nutrition. Productivity is not toxic as long as you take good care of yourself and put love in the first place. :)

So, it’s so sad to see that this trend of being intensely and unrealistically productive won’t let up. But I do agree that there are more people who are starting to look beyond what our capitalistic and consumerist society tells us is valuable. I’m going to chime in with perhaps a slightly different perspective, that being one of this comes from a place of self hate wrapped in a pretty package. Also I am in my 40’s so I have known a time sans the internet and I have seen it’s growth and the evolution of advertising. I grew up in a home that you could say was like a Pinterest board and this was in the 80’s. My mother was more concerned with outward appearances, which kind of stole from the actual experience like the it girls who some how have time to capture in film there highlight reels. In my experience growing up in a home run by a perfection queen it was not great. From not being able to ever make any kind of mess, not being allowed to dress myself because, god forbid, I reflect on my mom by wearing a less than perfect outfit, kind of gave the illusion of life sans life. From her home decor, organization, cleanliness, fashion sense/make up, looks, diet, even her perfect night clothing, my mom could be what today’s it girl is to a degree and this is on a psychological level. Christmas parties looked beautiful with my hair braided up in red and green ribbons all in our custom made matching taffeta skirts with a tree that took hours to wrap lights on each limb to sparking perfection (forget a sloppy tree, pfft there was no non matching or flawed stuff allowed), expensive garland everywhere and bows from the florist, not store bought. However it was exhausting and miserable but the pictures looked great. Everyone was irritated and tired, stressed with zero spontaneity which reminds me how influencers smile serenely in what appears to be a field of flowers, when really they are on the side of a road taking 500 pics. Point being the substance isn’t there and the point was missed and this stems from self esteem issues, which I think my mother had, and these young ladies very well seem to fit the criteria. It’s always look at me or am I better because I do this. It’s possible they are empty, shallow and hallow proving to themselves that they are okay. It’s a smug way of comparing yourself to others for self validation. Kind of like going over a room with a white glove as a cleanliness test. If it’s white, then it must be clean right? On that maintaining a routine and having goals are a positive. We all feel better when we are eating healthy, cleaned up, rested and taking some pride in ourselves. Being in a clutter free environment that is organized and harmonious can make for a better day. It’s the little things that count and advertisers may be perverting that. There has to be room to not be a robot and to be forgiving of yourself when you fall short. My fear is young people lack the grid to shoot it through and it makes for a loop of self esteem issues. Like a sickness, people spread around their self loathing to others trying to prove their worth to themselves.

Thank you for this video. I'm 22 and depressed and having those sorts of "day in my life" videos constantly pushed to me on my FYP and timelines has been so unhealthy for my mental state. I want to get to a healthier lifestyle including waking up earlier, eating breakfast and working out more... but I struggle with motivation, energy and have social anxiety so its not very easy. Sometimes I wake up and get ready by 10am (I'm a student and work parttime from home) and I feel like I've wasted my day and lose motivation to do anything for the rest of the day... why?! For some reason knowing other people are "living their best life" and have done more than I'll do today while sleeping is soooo demotivating.

Waking up early is really physically and spiritually healthier, it just many people use it as a stage to promote their ego. Waking up early (or any other form of self care) is messy, filled with rage, and the constant battle with your old habit to wake up late. It is a way of building a stronger mindset and personally, nothing aesthetic about it. These aesthetic videos make it more like a boasting rather than encouragement.

about a year ago i was really invested in the studying and journalling community, which in some aspects (aesthetics, work ethic and expensive stuff) is very similar to this trend. the issue was that a lot of people were still in middle or early highschool, while i'm in uni in a stem major. i don't really have time to re-write my notes from class and then study mandarin for five hours a day because i have classes til 8pm and assignments to hand in every other day. i would feel so depressed seeing everyone else seemingly study so much harder than me and get all these good grades, while i struggled so much. although i miss it sometimes, i'm really glad i'm not surrounding myself with that kind of content as much anymore.

I'm late, but this idea that getting up extremely early and packing your day with ✨aesthetic productivity ✨ is the only way to be successful is so harmful. There's a lot of people that do not work well in the morning. (Including myself) I have depression, anxiety, hypothyroidism, and am a night owl. I need to get those morning hours of sleep to feel even slightly rested. And no, going to bed earlier doesn't help. SO MANY people run on a later schedule and they can absolutely be successful! The only thing that would change for me waking at 5 am would be extreme fatigue and a bad attitude.

The latest I leave for work is 7.30am and the earliest I get home is 4.30pm, but I usually get home around 6.30pm. That is ELEVEN hours that I have to be awake enough to safely look after 32 children at once, as well as get them to learn something while not falling asleep on the job. I ain't waking up at 5am, I'd die.

Also, a majority of these people don’t have real “9-5” jobs. It’s a lot easier to wake up whenever, meditate, do yoga, go for a run, come back drink 125 gallons of water, make a fancy avocado toast, etc, etc, etc when you’re not having to rush out to sit in 1.5 hours of rush hour traffic to get to their job for 8am. As a teacher who has summers off, I can speak from experience on this. My breakfasts during the summer are fancy as f*ck because it’s a luxury that I have time for and enjoy.

I recently became sober from alcohol and I know it's absurd deep down but I keep thinking "well if I can just do half of what they do maybe my life will improve" and it's like nah, I gotta do a lot of other work to get myself where I want to be. I agree 100%! Also I must add that as a now 32 year old, my childhood "aesthetic" and "self-caring" was unplanned a lot better than the one of today's children because back in the day we didn't have social media and to me that certainly was a blessing. But yes, I am active on IG and other platforms, but the only "influencers" I actually let influence me when it comes to buying products are smaller ones who share slow-fashion and are true to their and my daily style or comic-artists I simply like and want to support. Otherwise why would you even believe them in the first place, right? I think we should realise social media platforms as a way to present one's passion or as a kind of portfolio or simply as a means to connect with ppl who share your hobbies/style and help each other than the "look, how cool MY life is and you also need this product to have the same life!". SO, totally agree with everything you said! (and I already get up at 5am because my job starts at 7am, so what are ppl with different work schedules even supposed to do according to those girls? They are just trying to sell a lifestyle that is only in movies tbh - so I watch movies to see that lol)

I have to be at work at 8:30 am & work 2 jobs and actually, I started waking up at 6 am to either do yoga or go to the skatepark before work, and my mental health was doing great. I think the trouble is that this lifestyle gives you a sense of control, but then when real life hits you and things start to go wrong in your personal life, suddenly it's not so easy to wake up at 6 am anymore & despite efforts to be better sometimes you just can't control the bad and the bad feelings that go along with it. Then you are hit with total shock when you go from being this powerful, motivated individual striving for personal success to someone who feels anxiety through the entire day and can't be 'that girl'. I think it's times like that though that kind of open your eyes to the fact that you can't control everything & really allows you to have great compassion for yourself. I still will implement trying to wake up when I can because it ultimately makes me feel so much better internally, but I think it's key to strive for progress, not perfection & remember that life will always have bumps in the road along the way & it's okay when things start to go a little south or life hits you with the unexpected because it will always do that.

i actually post this short of 'routine' content on my tiktok, and I totally agree with you. since, I post my progress of moving out, started from 0, even cleaning my bathroom looking like shit, cause that's just the reality of being an adult and wanting a clean space to live in, having trouble with cooking meals, washing my clothes by hand cause I can't afford a washing machine yet, etc. and yes! people love that relatability more... and I really want to show behind the scene of this so-called "aesthetic" life I'm living in. like, "Hey, it's TOTALLY FINE if you don't have it figured out at 23, or it's okay not making waffles/fruit bowl for breakfast cause you're craving pasta."

I didn't even realize there was a term for this. I actually did just switch up my routine about 3 months ago to start waking up at 5:30am to go to the gym, because I know myself and I know that if I don't do it before work it ain't happening. The catch is though is that before I switch to my work from home job, I was waking up at 3:30am to open at my last job. Not going to lie it does feel amazing to wake up early and get all of the extra stuff done out of the way so when I get off work I have absolutely nothing I need to do besides eat dinner and veg out. I am a night owl at heart, so it was tough for me to convince myself to get up and do something that I wasn't getting paid for. I definitely wouldn't have chosen to start going to bed earlier and waking up earlier if I weren't so in need of a routine, yay neurodivergence.

I wake up at 3 AM every day no matter what from working nights as an RN and I don't feel like doing shit until like 3 PM after several naps lol. there's no point in me doing two workouts and a meditation session and meal prep etc etc all before 8 AM. the afternoon into late night is when I get the most done. the whole 5 AM wake up productivity thing might work for some, but it's not sustainable for everyone. I think it's an especially precarious behavior for kids and teens to be exposed to so constantly, as well.

Thank you so much for this video, it was exactly what I needed to hear. It's so hard to separate your identity from what you do because, at least from the subliminal societal messages I've received, you are worth the value that you bring. That's what I realized I've been motivated by for a long time, I am what I do for a living rather than living as who I am. This is why people go through quarter/mid life crisis because we live our lives so focused on the expectation of who we should become based on how much money we make, and/or how much influence we have. I sure as hell haven't broken away from it yet, but I want to say this as a reminder to myself and others: You are valuable just by existing, anything that tells you otherwise is a lie.
