    I've been driving my WRX for about 2 years and I always press the clutch to the floor when I engage or shift gears. When I got my g35, I am doing the same thing but I stall alot or rough engagement. Thank God I found this video. I thought if you don't press the clutch in all the way to shift, the gears will grind, but I guess not. You've changed the way I drive.

    The clutch biting point on my g37 is right at the top as well, However Im glad that I started learning by pressing the clutch all the way in. Now after a week and a half learning manual im starting to get more comfortable with it and pressing the clutch in part way for faster shifts. It really only needs to get pressed in about halfway to be completely released from the pressure plate.Whatever works for someone. For me stalling the car about 100 and something times has worked well to not want to stall anymore. My second day in a manual was a commute in bay area rush hour traffic. It was a rough ride with a lot of bucking. That's changed and now 1st gear is reasonably smooth for a manual. The g37s been stalled over 100 times for sure and doesn't seem to mind.. Its got 177k running very strong. My 03 g35 auto with 150k ran very well when I sold it recently too.

    So would you say coming off a light, reving to about 2K, 2100 rpms is a good catch point for the car? Does that make for a smoother transition into motion? I just got my first 350Z a few days ago after driving underpowered inline 4s for the past 8 years. I'm absolutely not used to how high the clutch catch point is on the transmission, and I'm having to relearn a lot of techniques to properly operate this thing lol! Awesome work on your videos!

    I learned how to drive stick in my Nismo 370 but it was a a lot of trial and error, especially since the CSC goes out in the VQ's I was always nervous that I would break something. I'm 9 months in and so far so good, don't stall it anymore but I still use the synchro rev match for down shifts, i'm a cheater lol

  • @MotordyneG35

    @MotordyneG35

    7 жыл бұрын

    I know of the CSC issue and here is a video so you understand even more. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKOt2duhltfLadI.html Fortunately for me, my VQ, the slave cylinder is outside the bell housing. I even have a video of the install and flush, it is easy to fix. Plus it comes with a lifetime warranty from Oriely's, so it is completely free everytime I change it. That sucks for your 370z, because that cheap slave is inside the bellhousing and when it fails, you have to drop the entire transmission. At that point, might as well put in a clutch while you are at it. My G does not have syncro rev match, but hey I'm used to it by now. I doubt I would use it, but it would have been an awesome feature for sure when first starting out.

  • @nukexD

    @nukexD

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yeah I saw the video where you installed your external cylinder, very good content and attention to detail (makes me want to get a folder to keep track of everything haha). Yeah I agree with you, it's expensive and worse yet, you never know when it will shit on you again! If it goes out on me i'll definitely go with the z1 elimination kit or the zspeed csc delete but fingers crossed that it's not anytime soon! Yes, helps out a lot especially in California stop and go traffic.

    Sounds like your clutch is slipping and will soon need to be replaced. 6th gear puts the most pressure on the plate and it will not slip before all the other gears start slipping. 1st gear will start being the most noticeable first.

  • @MotordyneG35

    @MotordyneG35

    7 жыл бұрын

    You mean when you shift gears? If you shift gears too fast, the syncros do not have time to line up the gear and will grind. 03-04 G35 had the weaker syncros and wear out faster. Eventually, when the sycnros start to wear and you will hear a grind more frequently, just shift slower to give them time to engage the gear. If it grinds every time, no matter how slow you shift, your syncros are bad.

    If you are trying to save gas, you go through each gear shifting before 2k RPM, to achieve the window sticker gas mileage figures. I get 14 to 16 miles per gallon usually. Window sticker is 19 city / 26 highway. You can skip gears, but I do not during an upshift. You will strain the motor doing that because of the gearing unless you max out 2nd gear and just want to cruise at 40mph, yeah then you can use 4th. It is good practice to use all gears when accelerating, but you can do it however you please, as long as the car responds to it with a smooth acceptance.

    Just got my 05 G, it’s my first manual car, can anyone explain to me how I should be releasing the clutch when switch into higher gears ? I feel like I’m doing it too slow

  • @JohnMarshton777

    @JohnMarshton777

    4 жыл бұрын

    You COULD be doing it too slow, where as you dont allow yourself ample time to shift before the clutch spins down too much and has to catch back up to the speed of the flywheel when reengaged. If you're just cruising about and not really gassin it, that window of time that would make an "ideal" shift is smaller, and you have to compensate either by shifting faster, or just paying attention and learning your tach and powerband to garner where the best spot is shift for your driving style. Giving it just the littlest bit of power right before a shift to raise the rpms another 2-300 could be the sweet spot. This is all I've gleamed from learning stick in my 240sx over the past year. but the point should be pretty much the same.

    I keep getting this question. Do you think I should make a video? On the manual transmission, you get the REV light. You can set it to whatever RPM you like, then 500RPM before what ever you set it too, it will start flashing before turning a solid RED. Once it is a solid RED light, then you know you need to shift. This is so you do not need to look at the gauges and you will see the blinking red light out of your peripheral vision. Allowing you to keep your eyes on the road, ensuring you are not hitting redline.

    These cars are practically idiot proof because of the gear ratios. My 2004 350Z and my 2014 Q60S are such that at idle you can let the clutch out and just take off without stalling unless you are starting off on a steep incline. I have actually all but dumped the clutch on a flat surface at idle and the car lunges forward and just creeps along in 1st. Both that 3.5L and the 3.7L have a great deal of bottom end torque and the ratio of first is so low that at idle the thing will crawl along under 5 mph. Now, my 5.0L 1990 Mustang is another story. Unload the clutch and you are doing 12 mph. And you better be able to smoothly ease the clutch out or it will stall. But, the Mustang tachs all of 2000 rpm at 80 mph in 5th gear. The little sedan model can hit almost 150, It is not as fast or quick as the 350Z, but it does have a crap load of torque for passing even though it's 5.0L V8 is only 225 hp. The difference is you need to be good with a clutch to drive the Mustang where as my Infiniti and my Nissan are incredibly easy to drive and even an idiot could probably get either to move where as an idiot would never get my Mustang out of the driveway even on a down hill slope.

    Haha my 07 Z was my first car ever and a manual at the same time, you WILL stall for Atleast 1-2 weeks don’t take it out on the road untill u can get rolling in first gear till third. You have to practice on hills my driveway was a slope so i mastered slopes quick. You will burn the shit out of your clutch so expect it to go out in 6-8 months and start looking into stage 1-3 clutch kits lol save up man

    VQ35HR where is the bite point at in 350z ? that will help save the clutch longer so you just get there me quick

    소년우수한 well tbh the bite point is towards the top. Honda’s are close to the bottom so In the Z and G there’s a lot of dead space oem wise. If your learning manual on this car you will burn it no matter how much u try and keep it closer to the grab point it’s just not possible .. anyhow I would recommend learning manual before so you can Minimize the clutch burn

    VQ35HR I mean I guess unfortunately, but yeah I’ve been doing hella research on how to drive manual, I know the essentials. I feel like a Honda would be easier to learn on since the bite is lower. but I’d definitely want to get a 350 too, it’d be way more funner

    소년우수한 LOOLL bro I was just like you but trust me when you get behind the wheel your legs start shaking like a your body does it naturally it’s not your fault, tbh Z are cheap now so if you can scoop a manual Z go for it but get a couple lessons on a different car or instructor cuz stalling a Z is a very shitty feeling and the car does not like it lol. It took me 3 solid weeks to learn the “essentials “ and how to drive the Z, you gotta understand what the car wants you to do it’s an art and connection you build with it and adjust your driving style by the day. I’m into almost a year of owning my Z and I’m getting tuned with a stage 3 clutch. My first week with my Z and today I’m on a different level. It’s an enthusiast thing.

    If you really intend to teach beginners how to drive a manual car stop telling them they don’t have to engage the clutch pedal entirely...

    I installed the clutch myself and the slave cylinder. On this car, in particular, you do not. The engagement point is high on purpose.

    Motordyne G35 That’s not the point. It’s neither good for the synchronizers nor the transmission itself if you fail to disengage the clutch completely and ram it into gear. Especially if you are a beginner and know nothing about shifting a car manually. And that seems to be your target audience with this video. Once you are experienced, and I am sure you are, everything is fine. But I think a beginner should learn to shift with a clutch pedal pressed down completely.

    ActionHeinz ....the reason beginners usually have a hard time and stall a 350z or G35 is because they put the clutch to the floor and the engagement point is so high, that when slowly letting off the pedal it takes forever to get to the top and they stall. Obviously if you are grinding syncros, doesn't take a genius to figure out the clutch pedal is NOT being pushed. If you barely push, like just barely push it, that is enough for the clutch disc to get pressure from pressure plate and the throw out bearing does its job. The only way you will grind gears is by NOT depressing the pedal at all or not waiting on syncros by shifting too fast.

    Who said he was teaching beginners? This is an intermediate course at the very least.

    AK Safwat ....downshifting you can, but when up shifting you can bogg the motor down and strain it more if not done right. Sure if you take 1st to redline and then go to 3rd not a problem. I rarely skip gears when up shifting. My gear box is approaching 170,000 miles with no grinding issues so.....
