INFINITE ft. George MacKay | Omeleto

A terminally-ill man plans to 'live on'.
INFINITE is used with permission from Connor O'Hara. Learn more at lowkeyfilms.co.uk.
Sid is a young man just entering the prime of adulthood, with a strong circle of friends and a great love of life. He is also grappling with a terminal illness and will be dead in a few months.
Realizing his time left is quite short, he enlists his tight circle of friends to help him become "infinite" - to live on in some way despite the ending of his life. As they grapple with their feelings of sadness and grief, the group creates a ritual to celebrate Sid and the cornerstones that have made his life so great - even as he is on the verge of leaving it.
Written and directed by Connor O'Hara, this affecting short drama may be about death and coming to terms with one's mortality. But this isn't a dour, introspective narrative, with slow pacing and muted, bleached-out visuals. Instead, it possesses great brio, warmth and liveliness, thanks to its deeply affectionate portrayal of friendship, fellowship and spirit in the face of challenge and doubt.
The storytelling possesses particularly openhearted writing, tangling directly with the difficulties of grief and sorrow as Sid prepares to leave life. The tenor is set with the opening scene, where Sid details the things that have made his life so rich - family, friends, location, home and love - and puts forward his plan to commemorate and immortalize his existence. There's great humor and a long-standing sense of connection between all the friends that comprise this tight circle, as well as a wide-ranging set of feelings as each friend comes to terms with Sid's coming passing.
A film that focuses on friendship, solidarity and community rests its success upon an ensemble of great performances, and here it is lead by actor George MacKay, star of Sam Mendes's Oscar-nominated film 1917. MacKay came to fame gaining accolades for his compelling portrayal of a soldier facing extreme situations, and in this short, he faces another extreme situation involving life and death. Though the character and dramatic dilemma are different, the performance is just as richly sensitive, empathetic and deeply human.
The visuals, too, have a warmth to them, focusing on a mellow-hued naturalism and a lived-in look in the settings. The visual beauty emphasizes the richness and fullness of Sid's short but shining life: the beauty of the natural surroundings he's lived in, the comfort of his home and the fire that will make the sacred objects of Sid's life into a permanent memory in the world. By the time the fire sends the memories of him into the atmosphere to live forever, we understand in an intimate way just what makes life so beautiful and worth celebrating, both for Sid and for our own lives.
INFINITE is a rare film that is unabashed in its tackling of life's sacred transitions, yoking its broadmindedness and heartfelt nature of the main character's own arc. It is straightforward and unafraid of emotion, which is particularly remarkable for a film about friendships between men, and the deep bonds of affection between them.
But INFINITE avoids sentimentality, mostly because it does not sugarcoat the sadness and sorrow inherent in Sid's situation. He faces it with grace, good humor, deep acceptance and bravery, and helps his friends come to terms with it as well. In many ways, that's what rituals are for: they're not just to memorialize those who are passing -- but to help their spirit live on with those left behind. The ending ritual closes the film on these aching yet hopeful notes, with equal parts exuberance, tenderness and love -- everything that makes life so worthy of celebrating in the first place.

The beauty of it lies in Sid's unshakeable desire to oulive his mortal body through burning what he holds dear to his heart to infinity. The idea of burning is so symbolic. A phoenix burns into his own rebirth. The moment they were dancing around the fire is a moment of rebirth but at the same time a memento mori. The acting is marvellous. The way George's eyes speak his excitement, then his fear, then his liveliness, then his infinitude makes one's breath tremble. I cannot say that I didn't cry. It is unbecoming not to shed a tear in front of such heartwarming but gut-wrenching piece of art!

It's such a beautiful feeling to have somebody like these people in your life. Who would, not only do anything for you when you're all good and healthy but, also, when you're dying and they know it yet still did what he asked for, just to make him happy; one more time. People who have such kind of people are so blessed and so lucky.

I've heard this before but now that Im in middle age I can tell you without a doubt this is true. The thing I've always needed more than anything, the thing that is the hardest to find at the same time. Wish I knew this earlier in life and I wish they had told us all this more. *True* friends are harder to find than rubies and just as precious. Lovers, family, life partners are easier to come by. But true friends don't "get" anything back and often provide more, what the others can't. There's no system for the dynamic, not long term at least! Value them and look for them!!

A typical example of when acting, directing, story, script and all the other elements come together in perfect harmony to create a film that stands out from the rest. An original and very moving concept that eats into the heart of friendship, love, loss and the quest for an everlasting memory. It's added brilliance is the simplicity in its execution. Tonally it could not have been pitched better.

This is such a sweet film, made me cry because of how hard this hits close to home, one of my best mates has terminal cancer. I've been visiting him every week since the hospital became his home. We have lots of talks about life and memories we have of school and the countless times we got kicked out of lessons. I wish we could have done something like this before he got worse, he can barely move nowadays and it's breaking my heart. His doctors don't expect him to make it through the next two months. I'm gonna miss him when he sadly does take his last breath.

Every young person should have to watch this in school so they are explained to-how precious love, friends, family, home, and vocation (purpose) are and to really, truly cherish the bond of friendship you have made with other souls in this world. Sadly, not everyone learns this lesson. This short film touches home for me and my husband-we have both lost many beautiful friends, but we too have memories of nights round the fire with them. Thank God. So, everybody, take an inventory of your life, and then invite those close to you over for an evening of reminiscing and then sear it into your heart and mind forever. @@mdtowhidurrahman9005 I probably will come back, but it's really slow, trust and faith to rebuild take time, and once it has been slaughter that deep he can leave in an instant, but for now this last years is the most peaceful I had in 10 years, it make me realise the turmoil of issues I was in, it's nice to have a break.

Wow, 😭, I've been watching for a while and I love your short films. This one pulled at my heartstrings and if I had an ounce of his positivity in the midst of chaos, I'd be a better person for it. The short film has definitely inspired me to be better. Thank you 🤲🏾🌟🙏🏽

It’s not like this. My friend died young, had been ill for some time before the cause was determined by which time he could barely leave his bed. We spread his ashes in the sea at one of our regular surf spots while his surfboard burnt on the beach. We got in trouble because of the fire and black smoke, not that we cared.

dude its subjective, just because your experience isn't like it doesn't mean everyone else's isn't too, of course its dramatised, its a fictional film

I'm so sorry for your loss man, but just know that in more ways than not, it was just like that. There may not have been music, or smiles and fun... But what was there was a memory, something you will never let go and always remember someone by. Even though it was after he passed, I guarantee he was right beside y'all the whole time. Rest in peace to your friend, and have an amazing day.

Mit Seraffej I agree. In films terminally ill people are never really ill. In real life by the time you are diagnosed as having a short time to live you are already gravely ill.

@@pygiana16 That's not always true either. There are plenty of people who are feeling totally fine, or maybe just a bit under the weather, but still get diagnosed with a terminal illness. They may find out that they've only a couple months to live before they even begin to feel ill.
