    The Bismarck was a battleship of the German Navy (Kriegsmarine) and formed the Bismarck class with her sister ship Tirpitz. At the time of her commissioning in August 1940 under the command of Captain Ernst Lindemann, she was considered the largest and most powerful battleship in the world.

    This song is about a real battle that happened. The Bismarck, Germany's navy's flagship at the start of world war two, got a lucky hit on Britain's flagship, the Hood, killing 1418 men in an instant, ripped asunder by a mighty explosion, burnt, drowned - only three of Hood's crew survived. The Royal Navy then began a legendary and very dramatic hunt for the Bismarck, eventually crippling the ship's rudder and bringing her down in a prolonged slugging match where an entire task force just pounded Bismarck into a bloody, burning wreck. Out of a crew of 2200 men, only 114 survived, 2086 souls were lost in violence and fire. Epic, yes - but this story also chronicles the deaths of literally *thousands* of souls, all for ... what, really? Sabaton keeps history alive, so that we don't forget its lessons and tragedies.

    Hello, well written with a small correction. The Bismarck had no "luck" against the Hood. The HMS Hood was clearly inferior to the Bismarck in terms of armament and armor. The "luck" was on the side of the Royal Navy that the torpedo of the double-decker bombers destroyed the steering gear of the Bismarck and the battleship could only sail in circles and not flee from the superior British fleet.

    @@bubblegum0912 that can be about it I have unfortunately no information. However, the HMS Hood was simply too poorly armored so that the 38cm main armament could simply penetrate it in the steep fire. The HMS Hood was just from another time and the Bismarck was far superior to her in almost all respects.

    @@konradcurze5746 Yeah you're right, HMS hood was outdated. I guess we can only speculate what the conditions were inside the shop prior to the explosion. No doubt it was a Bismarck shell that started the chain of events, who knows might solely be the shell and a direct hit on the magazine's that cause it. Either way, Rest in peace all those sailors lost, on both sides of the battle.

    Check out the Sabaton History Channel's feature on this. The Kriegsmarine is the German Navy, and Bismarck was their flagship. If she (some say he, although this wasn't normal practice and never has been) was free to roam the Atlantic and get among the convoys in WW2, the battle of the Atlantic (and with it, WW2) would have been lost. The video for this is a masterpiece itself - the pocket compass you see in this is actually a replica, the original having been passed to the son of the last surviving veteran of the Bismarck sinking, who is I believe the fisherman at the start of the video.

    The Battle of the Atlantic would have been harder, but the Allies still would have won, the Royal Navy and later the USN simply had too many ships, especially carriers, for the Kriegsmarine to win in the end. Bismarck was crippled by squadron of biplanes, imagine what Devastators or Avengers would have done to it.

  • @phillee2814

    @phillee2814

    @@Philosopher419 The swordfish heroically managed to score a very lucky hit in the only spot in which Bismarck was vulnerable, and did so largely by being too low and slow for the anti-aircraft guns to effectively range on them, making the only effective fire completely manual. Aircraft types such as you describe were exactly what the AAA and its fire-control systems were designed to combat, and they would probably have been highly effective at doing so, even if they could have found her without their carriers being blown from under them once their bombs had glanced off her heavy armour and they'd been followed within range of home. Remember, the Battle of the Atlantic was a very close run thing, so would a battleship have been the tipping force? Churchill thought so.

    The Kriegsmarine was the name for the german Navy under Nazi rule. The Bismarck was the most feared Battleship of the Altlantic Theatre of War. Because it was capable of raiding Transports without sinking them, since it had not only Battleship Caliber Guns but also an array of Secondary armament of smaller Caliber, perfect for that job. Giving it the capability of prolonging it´s operational time by stealing food and Fuel from ships destined for England to help fight the Nazis.

    A brief history. The Bismarck sank the H.M.S. Hood, the best and supposedly unsinkable ship in the British Navy. It sank so fast that very few were able to get off before it did. This angered the British so much they ordered a hit on the Bismarck, sink her at any cost, and the hunt began. When they finally caught the Bismarck it sank even faster than the H.M.S. Hood, so almost no one made it off before it did.
