Industry 4.0 • A Brief History

Technology is changing the landscape of supply chain at a breakneck pace, and organizations that are able to stay ahead of the curve often enjoy a significant advantage over their industry competitors. Digitization, cloud computing, big data, Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence are all major factors in shaping operational strategy. These manufacturing innovations have given rise to a trend dubbed Industry 4.0.
John Stroup, President and CEO of Belden Inc., paid a visit to The Boeing Center at Washington University's Olin Business School to share his wealth of knowledge, and to give a brief history of Industry 4.0, aka the Smart Factory. He explained that Industry 4.0, a term coined in Germany, is the fourth major iteration in manufacturing processes.

I just found this presentation on June 2019 placed on the LINKEDIN network. I suppose the speech by John Stroup took place a few days before placing it to youtube, means some time around the end of June 2017. BELDEN inc. CEO spoke at the Washington University's Olin Business School delivering to the audience product information wrapped into the buzz word INDUSTRY 4.0. This is maybe the reason why he forgot complete and did not know that for two years already the INDUSTRY 5.0 exists correcting the issue delivered by INDUSTRY 4.0 he promotes.

I have already worked in a 40 year old mill, where all the machines were interconnected. They had old photo cells as sensors, flaps, etc and were highly reliable. What 4.0 your are talking about ?

The downside is that all those people who are no longer needed in the industry when they pay for the Internet of Things, they no longer have the resources to buy real things and end up being forced to just buy the ads.

Disagree, very greatly. This is the standard private capitalism; to benefit the few, at the expense of the whole. It is anti-open-source. It is anti-"Third Industrial Revolution", with its low marginal costs.

Industry 4.0 is democratizing innovation and empowering the rebuilding of the middle class. Manufacturing jobs are what we need in the United States in order for there to be a strong middle-class. We know that the lack of a middle class today is at the root of many social issues we are experience today.
