Industrial Style Double Coat Hook - Welding project
Ойын-сауық
In this video, I make an Industrial Style Double Coat Hook, using a rebar rod to give it the real industrial decor look. It was a good welding project for me, I did not heat the steel for bending I just used two short bits of pipe that slid over the rebar to get the leverage for the bend.
The steel plate is 3mm thick, 160mm long, and 75mm wide.
The Rebar is 13mm rebar
The main tools used, were a MIG welder, an angle grinder, and a Drill.
I am making a double coat hook to screw to the wall with 4 screws, and then we can hang our clothes on the hooks.

I like your corners - simple and clean! Just a tip for those who want rounded corners without measuring... trace the arc with a suitable sized coin or washer, and then grind down the flat bar to the mark with a flap disk.

As far as I used for various purposes like.itscalled coat and hat Wall 🧱 hangers not necessarily Wall but where convenient for... first you hang your coat and then your hat.. because I return to use them again it's put on your hat and then your coat and future customer put on your gloves 🧤🧤 if do so. Usually the custom is put on your coat and then your hat and then walking stick 🏒🏒 and then a muffler if you can have one...i saw somewhere decently avoidable... the ushers saying.. it's optional able of use...

What I am using is the old galvo water pipe, but yes I would think Bunnings would sell it, it may be a bit thinner now days (just guessing) But should still do the job, it doesn't have to be round, square tubing can also do the job. Hope that helps, wish you the best on your project.

Hey Mr. C, today I bent a piece of Rebar (an old one) and it broke. Just snapped. Was it junk? Are there different grades? Ever had this happen? Thanks Sir, I'm going to follow some of your designs.
@GavinClarkdiy
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan, yes there are different grades of rebar, some are high-tensile and are much harder to work with. I have just used the standard rebar that you would buy at most hardware stores that are used on houses the code on my 1/2 inch rebar is "D 500N" you would find a code as raised lettering somewhere on the rebar. Unless you use heat in my opinion, rebar is harder to work with than normal steel and does at times crack or break. First, unless you see the flame in any of my videos I have not heated or treated the rebar/steel in any way, it is straight of the shelf at the store. If I have bent rebar at a mark I try to never rebend at that mark again in another direction, I can bend it further in the same direction but not sideways it may crack, if you bend it too far and need to bend it back you will see what I mean. Bend it slowly and wider bends put less stress on the rebar. It took me a while to get used to working with it COLD, just have a play without trying to make anything and you will soon know how it works and what makes it crack or break, and the limits you have to work around to make something with it, if you are still having trouble heat is your friend. I hope that helps a bit, wear your safety gear.
Is your metal work bench attached/anchored or is it just really heavy?

@@GavinClarkdiy Thank you for the reply. I'll keep working it, because it is too good to let go. I really like the look of it. I am also experimenting with steel rod and that seems to be much more bendable. I did speak with my metal supplier and they said that rebar is often made of junky metals, kind of the sausage of metal manufacturing if you get my meaning. The "hot dog" of the metal world. The pieces I have are marked "4 S" and have one grade line. So, this indicates 1/2 inch and carbon steel. I'll take your advice! Thanks!
@GavinClarkdiy
2 жыл бұрын
Your supplier is saying similar things to what I have heard, and I totally agree with you about the steel rod, it is heaps better than rebar and nowhere near as brittle, I love working with that. I am glad you will keep going on this, I wish you the best.

Sorry I thought you were talking about this one, I have decided not to comment on finishes, As what climate you are in, is it inside-outside, lots of rain, ice, do you want long term and rarely touch, or a wax with a wipe over every year. That is why I have no opinion, Please ask someone in your area what you should use, I feel this is a better way to find out. Thank you for your comment.

Why not heat and bend the rebar to save yourself some "ugga duggas"?
@GavinClarkdiy
3 жыл бұрын
Well basically I don't have the gear to heat it, yes I could get it if I really needed it. But I guess I also look at it as exercise if I stop doing stuff that makes me strain a bit, eg bending lifting etc. If I make everything easy, I will overall get weaker and soon won't be able to do things, Then like a lot of people I would feel the need to go to the gym and strain there. Thank you for your good comment you are right, but I am happy doing what I do and am very aware of my limits (I think anyway). Thank you for your comment.
