    I have a vintage Kenmore. Opened up the gear box, didn't know it had one, yellow ear wax looking grease. Gonna have my husband clean it off and repack. Thanks for the video. The only one I've seen.

    Thank you for the great video! My machine started complaining last night, so I dropped oil in all the little holes, but this morning it is still making a squeaky sound every now and then. I'm going in there to see what I can see!

    Thank you so much for your videos! They are extremely helpful and your style is perfect. Own a consew 206rb-1 thanks to your recommendation. Was wondering if you knew what the “button” in the center of the top does? Appears to stop the lower shaft from being turned when depressed.

    Loved the videos...thanks..do you know where I can get a gear box for my SewLine SL106? Mine got damaged in shipping and I could not return ..so I patched up the box, but it looks suspicious when in fact it's fine, just broken and patched to allow me to keep the grease around the gears. Thanks for any directions on finding the part. I have goggled and can't seem to find and there does not seem to be a SewLine manufacturing company to contact. Thanks

    As always THANK YOU for your detailed instructions. I just purchased the 206RB-1 and now I am able to do this myself. Would denatured alcohol be OK to used to clean the outside of the machine as well.?

    I'd suggest (1) sewing machine oil + elbow grease, or (2) mineral spirits. Singer recommended bathing a machine in Varsol to release grease and oils from 400-series domestic machines. Does not destroy the paint. Modern equivalent is kerosene or mineral spirits. Great to use in Eagle-like oiler cans. Wear eye protection and have good ventilation.

    Do you have tips on how raise the presser foot to allow more material to go under the machine?

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Are you sure the foot is not already at its maximum? 1/2" give or take a 16th is all you can expect depending on your model. See if you can find a service manual online, they are probably available for free.

    That looks like some good grease.... may we ask the source of it? I have been using a full synthetic and I am not sure what to make of it.

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    7 жыл бұрын

    I got this from my local farm and home supply. Auto parts stores will carry this too. Generally full synthetic is pretty good stuff too. I think any of these will be a lot better than the original spuge that they use.

    Is lithium grease bad for industrial sewing machines? Ive read conflicting reviews and I want to get the right grease for my consew 206 rb.

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    7 жыл бұрын

    I don't know that it is conflict, so much as it is a matter of degree or relativity if you will. I will state a few tenants that I believe to be true on the subject of sewing machine gear grease and you can make up your own mind. Clean grease is better than dirty grease. Fresh grease is better than old dried grease. Some grease is better than no grease. Some grease is better than other grease but that does not mean other grease is bad. Hope that helps. Do you happen to know anything about what type of grease to use on plastic gears on a domestic machine? Or how to know if they should even be greased or not?

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    7 жыл бұрын

    I am not the person to ask about plastic gears. Plastic gears are a primary reason that I chose to purchase the older sewing machines since they don't have any plastic gears. I'm not sure who to send you to either. Probably just plain old sewing machine oil would be fine.

    Most types of lithium grease should be save for plastic gears. Don't use anything petroleum based. Silicon grease will be safe also, but it tends to dry out and get sticky quite fast. You can also ask in a hobby shop, there are a lot of plastic gears in RC models.

    I'm trying to understand the manufacture point of view about choosing gear box rather than using a regular belt to transfer the energy from shaft to shaft, what do you think is better Alexander ?

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Both are good. I think that the gears are more expensive to produce and you will never break a belt and have to replace it if you have a gear box type machine. I do not hesitate to buy either one.

    I want to do this on my machine, but I know that I'll drop the screw inside the machine at least 4 times. I'll also loose some skin on my knuckles at some point, but that won't bother me because a couple drops of blood will probably give my machine some extra mojo.

    How often do the gear boxes have to cleaned and regreased?

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    6 жыл бұрын

    About every 50 years or so. Ha Ha, funny right? I am not really sure, that is to say I have never read a recommended time. I have done this on 80 year old machines that had the original grease in them. Once I do one I don't expect to redo it in my life time. What I do when deciding is to evaluate the age of the machine, its cleanliness and apparent level of use. If I suspect that it may need to be done then I open up the box and inspect the grease to determine if it should be done or not. That is the process that I have shown here.

    Home machines are great for what they are. When you are ready for more power then think Industrial. Motors are rated in HP rather than amps.

    In general you should wear gloves when using denatured alcohol. The most common denaturing agent is methanol, which is not the best to have on your skin.

    Its bad practice to use denatured ethanol with bare hands. Commonly this is denatured with 5% methanol. (enough said), If you must, use SDA 3C ethanol with uses isopropanol. this is usually not what you get at home depot etc.
