Just received a compost bin as a gift and happy to find your positive review. Have been struggling with the plastic bin/bucket situation for years and seems this will solve the problem. Yay! Happy new year!

I just started composting and it was great that smell was not my problem. However, I saw a swarm of fruit flies and some larvae/eggs on the charcoal filter. Could you explain/help me what went wrong? I have a half of the bin piled for 3 weeks so I wonder if I had to empty it sooner or something.

they say the filters last about 2-3 months although probably longer if you are emptying the scraps out frequently. I have just put degradable bags to put inside the bin as I can then lift them out and place directly in my council green bin which is emptied every two weeks here in Australia. I have no plans for a compost bin/pile in the yard but know that every thing that grows can go in our green bin which even means egg shells, bones, dairy etc

How long does it take for the food scraps to turn into topsoil? Can you put animal scraps or just plant based foods?

How long does it take for it to become just dirt or pure compost? What do you do with any liquid build up? And what do you do with it once it’s done? I live in an apartment with no outdoor area & there seem to be no places to accept the compost once it’s collected.

Tesla Cannon this is just storage for your scraps until you take them to your compost bin it’s not a composter. They do make indoor composters but they are a little pricey.

I ordered one on Ebay. Unfortunately, it only came with a black plastic mesh replaceable filter. Additionally, it's impossible for me to open the stainless steel base that holds the supposedly charcoal filter to clean it. I've contacted the seller with no response.

My question is , does the food decompose in that same bin, so that when i take it out its already compost???

  • @Zachry86

That is not the point of this thing. This is just for temporary storage indoor between the times you empty it into your outdoor composter. There are defintively indoor composters of different kinds (worm, bokashi etc.) But that is something way different.

Hello, my problem is, I dont have a backyard to do my compost in. I dont want to throw my organics to waste, but I dont have space to make compost that attract bugs, odors etc. I dont want just a bin to contain my waste for a while until y take it to a big compost pile. W hat I need is a way to make compost without bugs etc. Can I make compost on a closed bin? Withoust bugs. Someplace where I just dump my waste and it produces compost by itself hehe. Help!

I recommend using compost worms for kitchen scraps. Vermiculture or using a worm bin will break down the food and generally not smell. It also has the advantage of being a "cold" composting method so the bin doesn't get hot.

If you are iphone user, others recommended an app called 'ShareWaste'. You can find someone who could accept your compost pile near you.

The bottom will leak in 3-6 months due to acid build up. This is a known problem for all the stainless steel compost bins on Amazon.

I thought you need to add starter bacteria to begin with. Then you layer the starter on each layer that you put scraps in.

I purchased one of these. It's useless. While it claims to be airtight, it isn't because the filters aren't fitted. I had larvae embedded in the filters as well as in the food scraps. It was disgusting.
