Smoking is very much an integral part of the culture there. . .

English is taught in schools, colleges, and spoken widely,there are several factors for the communication issues one reason being, the generation gap, the first educated gen don't speak in English & Hindi well and also as everyone speaks Mizo/ Lushai/ Dialect that doesn't put pressure on the general populace to communicate in English😅 ( personal observation and opinion ) Sorry for the issues you've faced, hope you'll meet more people who can communicate in Hindi and English more in your next visit😊

You should go to Vangchhia in Champhai district. There are more than a 100 menhirs, proved to be a necropolis and a lost civilization. Also known as Kawtchhuah Ropui "The Great Entrance". The place also has one of India's oldest method of rainwater harvesting systems.

Communication is difficult because we use our local langguage more then other language like English and Hindi. But, most of us understand english but like ive said before we choke speaking english becase we barely used it.

BTW smoking is fun and quite addictive, but it's bad for your lungs, biscuit with cigarette, smokey! but fun is more important right! seems like everything fun and enjoyable are either not good for your health or prohibited or somehow against common religious belief. WTF! If you really want to live, you have to die a little, meaning you needed to trade some of your expected life time for a few minutes of fun, which eventually may not be a good transaction, whatever. IMAO, Language is not really the barrier, use gesture, sign language or whatever. The trick is to become lively, live as the local, dance around, mingle a lot and be loud. Hope you enjoy your stay in Mizoram. BTW ask around, seek a tour guide or someone lively, a friend, may be, (but not a dull boring dead one) to show you around the places, Champhai have lots of famous and historically important places. NB: Don't asked for a beautiful spot, ask for a tourist spot, spot where people from the outside usually goes, they could show you tons.

Because there's no need/not mandatory for speaking English and Hindi due to the homogenousity of the population, the general Mizos are not used to listening and speaking in other languages but thisbis changing with the new generations mainly from primary and middle school levels. Though it will take a bit more time.
