Indigenous Origins of American/Canadian City Names

A lot of the names of cities, states, provinces, and territories in Canada
and the United States actually come from words found in indigenous languages,
like Ojibwe, Mohawk, Massachuset, and others. This video will tell you the
meaning of the names of cities, like Toronto, Ottawa, Chicago, provinces like Ontario, Québec, and states like Ohio and Michigan.
This video is part of a mini-series to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD) and Indigenous Heritage Month in Canada. #NIPD #NIPD2020

Hi! I’m Canadian and live near Lake Simcoe, north of Toronto. Lake Simcoe is Zhooniyanggichigamin (Tradepost lake) in Ojibwe. The river that runs through my town is called “Black River”, but a lot of the signs say “Maskinonge” (which is actually pronounced “mashikinong”). Cool video!

That's awesome! It's cool how indigenous languages are so present in our everyday life in Canada, but many Canadians don't realize how super cool and unique indigenous languages are spoken in Canada. :)

The name "Texas" comes from the Caddo word "taysha", meaning "friend". The Spanish spelled it "Texas", adding their plural S to make it "friends". The X used to be pronounced in medieval Spanish like "sh" in English.

Mohawk (Kanienʼkéha) and Wendat/Wyandot are both Iroquoian languages, so it's possible that a similar word exists in both. It's also possible that the Mohawk and Wendat both gave the word to different groups of settlers (since their territories are in different areas of the province). Hard to say for sure, but just a guess! 😄

Why don't they just write these names using the the native written language instead of English? Then they could be true to native cultures.
