Indigenous Names of the Caribbean Islands

The Caribbean islands was inhabited by the Amerindians for some 4000 years before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. Therefore, of course, they had their own names for the islands.
There were 2 distinct groups.
1) The Arawak’s - Also known as Taino.
2) The Caribs - Also known as the Kalinago
Cuba - Some authors think it was names after the town of Cuba in the Beja in Portugal, but I am almost sure it is a derivation of the indigenous name, Cubao, its way to close for it to be a coincidence. Although the meaning is not sure Cubao may be translated to “Where the fertile land is abundant”.
Jamaica - This one is easy because I think most persons know that the indigenous name for Jamaica is Xaymaca, which of course, Jamaica is derived from. The meaning of Xaymaca is “land of wood and water or land of Springs”
Hispaniola - for those that don’t know, Hispaniola is the name if the whole Island that includes the nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. So, the original names might have been Ayiti or Kiskeya, Ayiti of course became Haiti. Ayiti means rough earth or mountainous land. Kiskeya means Mother of all lands.
Puerto Rico - Which means rich Port in Spanish. Indengous name was Boriken which itself means “land of the Valiant and noble Lord”.
Anguilla - which means eel is some form of early Spanish was named Malliouhana by the Taino natives it means Arrow Shaped Sea Serpent because of its shape.
St. Martin - This refers to the entire island, not the different parts as you know St. Martin is shared by the Netherlands and French. The island is named after Saint Martin of Tours because Christopher Columbus named on St. Martin’s Day. 11 November. The original indigenous names where Soualiga or Oualichi which means “land of Salt”.
St. Kitts - Which has a formal name of Saint Christopher Island, Ingenious name was Liamuiga which means “fertile land”
Nevis - Which is derived for the Spanish phrase “Nuestra Senora d las Nieves” meaning Our lady of the Snow”. The Carib name was Oualie, meaning “land of beautiful waters”.
Montserrat - named after the Virgin of Montserrat of Montserrat mountain near Barcelona in Catalonia in Spain. Its Carib name is Alliouagana, which means “land of prickly Bush”.
Barbuda - Which most lightly means “bearded” original Carib name was Wa’omoni meaning “land of Herons or Large birds”
Antigua - ancient in Spanish - original indigenous name is Waladi which mean “land of Fish Oil”
Guadeloupe - named after the Virgin Mary, venerated in the Spanish town of Guadalupe. With the indigenous name being Karuhera. Means “island of beautiful water”
Dominica - named after the Latin word for Sunday after the day Christopher Columbus spotted the island. The Caribs named it Wai'tukubuli which means “Tall as Her Body”
Martinique - The name evolved from the original name giving to it Martinica to Madinina Which mean “island of flowers”. There are claims that Madinina is the Carib name of the island but there is evidence it was also called Jouanacaëra meaning ‘the island of Iguanas
St. Lucia - names after Saint Lucy of Syracuse. The Carib name was Hewanorra meaning “land of the Iguanas
St. Vincent - so named because it is said Columbo “discovered” it on 22 January, the feast day of Saint Vincent of Saragossa. The Carib name is Hairouna meaning “land of the blessed.”
Grenada - Not totally sure the original of name Grenada, one theory is it names after the town of Granada in Spain. The indigenous name is Chamerhogue, but I could not find the meaning of this word.
Barbados - Derived from the Spanish word Los Barbados, meaning “the bearded ones”. The indigenous name is Ichirouganaim with possible translations meaning Red land with white teeth” or just “teeth” about the coral Reefs.
Tobago - Which has no other recorded name other than that of Tobago which means tobacco pipe. It can be indigenous as the word for Tobacco has roots in native Taino/Carib languages.
Trinidad - So named because the full Spanish name was “Isla de la Trinidad” which means the island of the Trinity”. The original Indigenous name was said to be Iëre meaning “land of the Hummingbird” but it has been accepted that that was a corruption of the Awarak work Kairi which mean simple “island”.

The Arawak and the Caribs are the same people and often lived among each other, it's disrespectful to say we are not peaceful. You're letting me down not getting the perspective of a real Carib/Arawak (We're still here). In history, we've been commonly confused with the Kalinago who were war-like Indians of the South Americas. Honestly, thanks to them we survived Columbuse's ambush. No one tribe is better than the other and it's about time we set the record straight between us. You can reference the book Kabethchino by John Peter Bennett ( An Arawak) and Richard Hart. No, the Taino don't make the whole Arawak Nation and it is wrong that they are the only ones getting that recognition as the nation is an umbrella to multiple tribes, not just Porto Ricans.

I really enjoyed learning the indigenous names and I wholeheartedly agree with you that it should be taught at school. We usually skim through it and go to when the Europeans came and it's ridiculous because descendants exist and still do live in the Caribbean. In Barbados we have so much evidence that they used to live here. This is a big part of our history. Thank you for sharing.

Incredibly informative, but as an addition to Hairoun (St. Vincent), the exiled original people the Kalinagoes or Garifunas who where exiled to South America after the fall of their leader Chatoyer...still to this day, refer to SVG by the name preserved through the still spoken indigenous language, as Yurimen. There is evidence of this by an old map circulating over the WEB, that shows the islands and all the original indigenous names. Keep the videos coming, it’s important to know “Ourstory” which often time corrects “History”.

I guess ka(i) means hand and kona means angle. Kakona appears to refer to hands in the worshipping/greeting position. Please correct me if I am mistaken. Or perhaps it refers to hand kept in the blessing position, as an elder would do to a child.

Beautiful video 💯 I'm Amerindian from the states purely. However when I vacationed in St.Martin I had an overwhelming feeling of the past people. I just knew in that moment it was the ancestors Soualiga looking at me. It was spooky for a moment because this feeling woke me at 3am which I never awake in my sleep. It's a feeling I can't explain and feeling some people won't relate to whatsoever

Thanks for sharing. I was wondering how the indigenous Arawak, taino got there, its great to know they came from Central America, and other parts, i also seen a recent video where indigenous African traveled the islands of Central America and America and also traded with goods, and gave gifts to each other and teach each other things. Christopher Columbus was the last to discover our ancestors already owned, lived in these beautiful islands peaceful. He didn’t discover anything at all, but we all know they the true devils. Thanks for sharing. I feel like as time goes by more and more the truth is waking us up, and the spirits of the indigenous will be more at peace on the land when people know its original name, please share more videos like this. I enjoyed it, as a truth seeker, and a first generation Ayiti American. Thanks for this dude. Most of my family are from Grenada and Trinidad so I found this really insightful. I think in the future I’ll be calling them by their original names from now on.

Good vid and info. Thanks But as Haitian (Ayiti/Kiskeya) i wonder why you came with mentioning every country/state apart but make no distinction between Haiti and Dominican Republic. Seems arbitrary to choose the name Hispaniola instead, especially as it was also called Saint-Domingue, Haiti etc. The name 'his-spaniola"'literally means 'Little Spain', a name the indigenous Amerindian people surely did not know before their demise. shalawam

Thanks for watching! All other country/states mentioned all have different names for each island, eg Trinidad and Tobago etc. Haiti and The Dominican Republic share the same island and its the island names i wanted to highlight. I did speak to both nations sharing the same island. Hispaniola is "colonial" name with Ayiti/Kiskeya being the original, indigenous names for the island. Thanks for your interest and hope this helps you understand my approach.

Regardless! Haitians and Dominicans should be proud of our country! We should be proud for the island we occupy! Blessed to be Caribbean!
