In this Her Stories interview with Korina Emmerich, the designer and activist describes her experience growing up as a Native person in a white society. She shares how she came to love fashion, deciding at an early age that she was going to be an artist who used fashion as her medium.
Emmerich utilizes colors inspired by Native American pow wow regalia. One of the biggest points Emmerich likes to make as a designer is to talk about how designers can use Indigenous references in their work without being culturally appropriating
"I think it's also important to think about how to use traditional Indigenous elements in modern-day fashion and keeping it modern," she says.
Emmerich explains how when she first got started, she was hesitant to embrace her culture and Indigenous fashion into her design but it is now a huge part of what she does today.
Through her work, Korina Emmerich is empowering young Native women and providing representation for young Indigenous women in the modern fashion world.

Remember folks: it's cultural *appreciation* , not appropriation 😘
My mom was a local dress maker on our reservation. All her dresses were stricly for ceremonies, pow wows and special occasions.
I LOVE WHEN INDIGENOUS MODELS ARE USED ♥️♥️♥️👏👏👏
I still don't get why Native Americans ain't respected as much as they should but again what do i know i'm just a South African...
You’re very sincere and passionate about your work, your culture and your purpose. Prayers and blessings! 🙏❤️✌️

The Puyallup tribal motion adjacent to Tacoma Washington nice job covering this story.
The real American woman. Health, wealth and happiness to you. I wish you power life, sun and more power.
A great inspiration to everyone and beautiful fashion with great cultural meaning.
Blessings are comming for natives and Glory is brightly emerging from them. Some races and cultures has been held down so long that all they can do now is to rise and for them the crowd will go Apeshit
I didn't like her that much when she was in project runway because she was very mean and ill mannered, but now 7 years later she looks much more mature and inspiring
I love the colours and the designs. I wish I could wear some of them. I also love the vibrant colours and designs of native African cultures, and Asian cultures even historical costumes. But the social atmosphere now makes wearing any of these impossible. Can we change this? Or is it impossible, and I will never be able to wear any of them?

@You Mad? I may well be but England is the place of no historical flamboyant costume. It was all borrowed from France in the 18th century, Spain in the 15th and 16th centuries, We even had Norman input from the Vikings and the Normans. I'm not sure I want to dress in blue wode.
Such beautiful work! It's so inspiring what you are doing. Keep up the great work for the indigenous people! ♥️🙏🦅🙏♥️
She has a beautiful soul, i love her clothing! Where can we buy her clothing?

wonder if that would have mattered had she been a man.
Really models were Indigenous? 🤔 this designer looks like a friend of mine, she's Native and Dutch...Would be nice to hear these designers acknowledge their white or non-Indigenous ancestary. Nice clothing and good to see that this designer sews her clothing 👌
Doesn’t she look like a liv tyler sister

No she looks like Korina.
I would also ask all white & non native people to not wear your clothes It becomes cultural appropriation if whites wear her clothes According to Kori owns words !!!!!

Go ahead it's nice to see that as long as it isn't in a disrespectful way like how some people make a mask but not know what it's for.

I feel like Project Runway went out of their way to humiliate this woman for her beliefs.
All her designs look the same
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
If she is so interested in bringing back native culture, she should have brought some other indigenous people to wear her clothes.. Just saying..
These are not indigenous original people period
5 dollar indian.
