India's Biggest Transgender Marriage - Full Documentary

Koovagam, Tamil Nadu: Koovagam hosts India's biggest transgender festival. As per the 2011 census of India, more than 5 lakh transgenders are living in India. Most of the transgender's livelihood is mainly dependent upon three things begging, offering blessings on auspicious occasions, and Prostitution. When living in such harsh realities Koovagam festival offers transgenders happiness and hope. Through this festival, Hindu religion and tradition have provided transgenders a special place in a society where they are being celebrated and cherished and they challenge the mainstream narrative of the male and female binary in society.
Thousand and lakhs of transgenders from India and outside India gather in Koovagam during 18 days long Koovagam Kuttandavar festival, where they also get a chance of getting married. In this episode, Firstly I will attend the unique beauty pageant contest of transgenders which is known as miss Koovagam. This contest has many similarities to miss India, and Miss World. After this, I will go to Koovagam to attend the unique marriage of Transgender where thousands of transgender get married to lord aravan, Arjun's son.(Story from Mahabharata). The next day as per the Mahabharata story, Aravan will be sacrificed. So every transgender will mourn at common place. They get widowed in one day

In the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Arjuna assumed the name Brihannala when he was disguised as a female dance teacher in Virata's kingdom during the Pandavas' period of exile. In the Mahabharata, when Ila, the daughter of Chandra (the moon god), transformed into a man every alternate month, her male name was Sudyumna. During the female phase, she retained the name Ila. This transformation was the result of a curse placed upon her by Lord Shiva. Shikhandi was born as the daughter of King Drupada, the ruler of Panchala. However, upon her birth, it was prophesied that she would be the cause of her father's enemy's death. Fearing this, her father sought to raise her as a son. As Shikhandi grew older, she was engaged to marry a princess named Amba. However, Amba had been previously rejected by Bhishma, an avowed celibate, which caused her great anguish. Amba sought revenge and performed severe penance to Lord Shiva, who granted her a boon that she would be the cause of Bhishma's death in a future life.Amba was reborn as Shikhandi, now a male, and played a significant role in the Kurukshetra war.

I love how Hindu can always see the divine in everything! Most Hindu Buddhist and Sikh people I've encountered are very good people and very kind! I hope more things can open for trans people and the LGBTQIA people in India, because there is nothing wrong with them they are people too, and they deserve humanity and love! If I wasn't a follower of African spirituality I would be a Hindu, as some of my ancestors are from India.

The fact is that eunuchs and the "transgender" community in Asia has been celebrated for thousands of years. But modern cultures and modern understandings have led to so much rife and abuse, especially homophobic abuse. I know a few cases of transgender humans seeking asylum because they were abused by police for the offence of homosexual indecency. India doesn't get a cookie for suddenly being able to finally legalize homosexuality in their country, that so openly celebrates all forms of human life, but it's still very interesting to listen/watch. Edit: And they still haven't tried to legalize same sex marriage, still a lot of work to do.

Instead of using random quotes from the Bible, perhaps we can, as they say, put ourselves in someone else's shoes. Empathy toward your fellow human and understanding is the teaching of Jesus. People that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. This simply means we are all sinners and have absolutely no right to judge anyone unless you think you are God himself. It is not for you or I as an individual under the beautiful umbrella of God to judge anyone... that is for the Almighty to decide. And the Almighty loves everyone...judgement of others is Hell on its own... think about it. And these beautiful people have the same right to live the way they choose as you do...the right given by God... not you, not me. Treat others as you want to be treated. This isn't just the message of Jesus. This is an ancient message handed down from several ancient religions and cultures. Think about this...Do you want to be hounded, beaten, and judged about your life and your beliefs? No? Then what gives you the right? Think about it. May God bless and keep these brave and beautiful trans gender souls. Hell is being mistreated, misunderstood ❤️ but Hell is also causing mistreatment and misunderstanding. May God bless all of us sinners, and may He have mercy on ALL of us, including you and me. Love yourself and love others as God loves you... with patience and understanding...that is all there is.

Correct! 😀 If you love Jesus you also love people and animals too. You have empathy. Jesus is stronger and more courageous than all of us combined. He could hate all people if he wanted but he loves people, understands them because he's suffered everything we've suffered. You never know what someone else has been through, what they've felt, experienced, what their genetics are, their family backgrounds, their problems. Each time you really get to know someone you'll be amazed how much More there is under what you see. I believe every person is here with specific problems to work through and specific talents to enjoy and share with others. Only God knows what they are. If you want to condemn someone condemn yourself first. What's wrong with you that you aren't willing to see the good in someone? If you think someone's wrong but they're humble, kind, generous, accepting and actively helping the people around them, sharing what little food and clothing they have, sharing their shelter, carrying buckets of water day after day after day so others can drink, cooking food for them, staying up with them at night during sickness, cheering them up, making them laugh, drying their tears... If you want to condemn someone what can you learn from them to make yourself better? Jesus says be like a child. That's because children see the kindness in people above all else, like animals do too. Besides it's good for your own soul. What a relief to know we don't have to judge anyone! Jesus can do that on his own time. He's said so. All we have to do is love people. Which means we get to enjoy them as they are without worrying about it. If you want to save someone be the best you. Save yourself first. Learn from others, listen to others, care about others, enjoy other people and you'll each be able to share what's good in you with the other. Hate doesn't have a reason to exist.

I enjoyed this documentary, I just wished it was more English subtitles available throughout it. It would've been a little easier ti understand everything. Like I'm curious to why they were crying and hugging towards the end of the documentary? P.S. Also is India the most populated country & why everyone at the festival were like walking zombies. As if they have never even seen a camera/microphone? Bless their hearts 🥰

They were crying in the end because the god they were married to was dead. So, they became his widowed. Now, widowhood in India is considered to be inauspicious. With widowhood comes, losing lots of things including loss of colour in once life. In India, married women are suppose to wear color full sarees and bangles. she can wear Bindis (Red dot on your fore head) and vermilion powder on her forehead and talli (which is the sign of being married). Once you get widow, you lose all those things and you cant wear them again in your life time till your remarry. So, losing of colour in our life is what they mourn.

Gender dysphoria care should be inclusive of affirming, addiction and trauma care. The spiritual pilgrimage was good but selling and having sex at the venue of an important once-a year SPIRITUAL event is confusing.

After having watched 5 or 6 documentaries about transgender life in India what I'm fairly certain of is that these people have an extremely difficult time finding gainful employment . Their society at large does NOT want to hire them , so , they resort to prostitution as a means to keep food in their bellies . If you remember , that was the first response given by the person he was interviewing about the activities behind the temple . Until you know what it's like to NOT have enough money to EAT REGULARLY , please DON'T JUDGE !!!
