    the way the Ark in this movie works is inside the Ark is the dust of the Ten commandments from when Moses smashed the tablet and it also holds God's Judgement Commandment Death Army that has the ability to look into one's soul and see if the person/persons have broken any of the 10 unforgivable sins decreed by God...and it's been said that the window to a person's soul is through their eyes so as long as their eyes are closed, they are free from Judgement from God's Commandment Death Army

    When George Lucas made Star Wars everyone was so convinced it would be a flop, even Lucas himself. So instead of going to the Star Wars premier he instead flew to Hawaii with his friend Steven Spielberg to chill out. While they were there they came up with the story for Indiana Jones.

    Actually George Lucas had the idea for Indiana Jones before he made Star Wars. He and another filmmaker Phillip Kaufman (1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1983's The Right Stuff) who was Lucas' first choice to direct the film but then Kaufman left after two weeks of working on the film, then George did Star Wars and while waiting for the grosses to start coming in for Star Wars (and wanting to get away from the opening) he joined up with Steven Spielberg in Hawaii and Lucas asked Spielberg what his next project is and Spielberg said that he had been trying to get the attention of the James Bond producers for a long time because he wanted to do a James bond film, then George pitched Raiders of The Lost Ark to him. Steve agreed on the spot on the condition of the main characters name is changed as the name was originally going to be Indiana Smith. Lucas then suggested 'Okay what about "indiana Jones"?' Then steve was like 'Okay I'm in.'

    Particularly in regards to Indiana's characterization - which is a lot more callous and he is - frankly - somewhat of an ASS. Also - if you had problems with the snakes? You may want to keep a sick bag next to the chair for... a certain other type of creepy crawlie infestation. I personally cannot handle that scene, myself. I can handle a lot of things. But I can't handle THAT. EEEAUUURGH... Blech! In fact, parts of Temple of Doom verge into outright HORROR. It was - in fact - THE film that made the MPAA create the "PG-13" rating due to the intensity that almost, but not quite, reached R-Rated level.

  • @logandarklighter

    @logandarklighter

    I saw that episode - a favorite. But I had a further idea - and it comes in two parts: ONE - The darts activate rather slowly in the film. There's like a full one-second delay between the pad depress and the dart shooting out. So I thought - maybe what has happened here is that the temple is OLD. And it has barely had any visitors. The pad/dart combo has to be a complex mechanism. Maybe the inner workings of it are corroded or grown into with tree roots. That would explain the slow activation time. Originally they acted MUCH faster. TWO - What if the darts were timed such that they were meant to kill anyone APPROACHING the idol. But that same timing would work AGAINST them hitting anyone going the other way? A combination of both factors could be what saved Indy!

    Here’s something for symbolism and perspective in the last scene of the movie. The Ark was buried under the desert in a temple for thousands of years. You could not find it without a map. The movie ended with a non-described box, in a giant warehouse, down a unknown row or column and placed in a spot that could only be found by a map. It is once again lost in a desert of boxes.

    Easter eggs were definitely a thing even at the time "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was made. In fact, there's a famous one when Indy and Sallah first discover the Ark and are lifting the big stone lid off of its resting place. As they're lifting it out, you'll notice that there are small columns surrounding them, covered in hieroglyphs. On the column to Indy's right, one of the hieroglyphs looks like R2-D2 and C-3PO. Similarly, when Indy is running from the Hovitos at the beginning of the movie and yelling at Jock to start the plane, you can see that the registration number on Jock's plane is OB-CPO, a slightly obscured shout-out to Obi-wan Kenobi and C-3PO. There are some others Star Wars easter eggs in the Indiana Jones sequels as well but, since I don't think you've reacted to them yet, I won't spoil them here. Let's just say that there are enough Star Wars easter eggs in the Indiana Jones movies that there's actually a fan theory that all of Indiana Jones's adventures are just dreams that Han Solo is having while frozen in carbonite. The Indiana Jones movies also have some shout-outs to James Bond. And the num-chuk/coat hangar scene with the Nazi in Marion's bar is actually a callback to a gag Spielberg did in one of his earlier movies ("1941"). Oh! And several of the characters throughout the Indiana Jones movies are named after the filmmakers' pets, including George Lucas's dog, Steven Spielberg's dog, and the dog of screenwriters Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz. Fun side note to that one: George Lucas's dog was also the inspiration for Chewbacca in Star Wars. And, finally, this isn't really an easter egg but is maybe a fun fact depending on what kind of TV you watched growing up: Indy's rival archaeologist in this movie, Belloq, is played by Paul Freeman who went on to play the villain, Ivan Ooze, in the Power Rangers.

    Raiders owes a lot to the writing of H. Rider Haggard in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Haggard created the model of the Great White Hunter in books like King Solomon's Mines, She, and many others. Raiders relies heavily on practical and optical effects, coming as it did before CGI would take over. One particular stunt, with Indy traversing under a German truck, is a recreation of a classic created by stuntman Yakima Cannot for the 1939 John Wayne film Stagecoach. Both versions of the stunt are amazing.

In the cinema the whole place erupted with laughter. With the snakes many of the snakes used were harmless tree snakes however the king cobra was real however there was a thin piece of glass barely visible between Ford & the snake. Such a great moment. The stunt with the truck with a stuntman going underneath was probably one of the most daring & incredible stunts ever caught on film. Finally I am still bewildered to how that final scene was done with the ark. If CGI was around back then that is easily explained however we are talking about 1981 & to perfect a scene like that is something quite special. Practical & special effects will always be preferred by me than what is used today in film. Thanks

    This is my favourite movie of all time. I've seen it dozens of times and I love seeing the reaction of younger people who see it for the first time. This movie has it all and it Spielberg loved the older swashbuckling movies from older times and many movies have borrowed from Indiana Jones like the Mummy, National Treasure, and others. I cannot wait for Dial of Destiny, it looks fantastic.

    A little clarification. The Ark of the Covenant was what the ancient Hebrews used to carry the original Ten Commandments around in. )The same that were brought down from the mount by Moses). These original Ten Commandments were etched on stone tablets. This is why when they opened the ark expecting to find them, all they found was sand since the tablets had already turned to sand from the erosion of time.

    LOL, if you react that way to seeing spiders on someone's back (I too admit it freaks me out), I cannot wait to see your faces seeing the next movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Do you know about the fan theories that the Indiana Jones movies all take place in Han Solo's imagination while he's still frozen in carbonite? Indy 3 or Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade is probably my favorite of the franchise, and then the next sequel after that is probably the worst movie of the franchise, LOL! It is not that part 4 is so horrible and it does have its moments, but it feels so out of place and Indy just looks and feels so different too as a character. Did you know there were also the young Indiana Jones chronicles show? Disney & Lucasfilm did announce an Indiana Jones 5 movie I cannot wait to see. Did you see how Chris Pratt said he will not be Indiana Jones out of respect for Harrison Ford? That was really cool of him. Though, at the same time, I could see Pratt playing Indy in a movie.

    To me, it's still just "Raiders of the Lost Ark". This was Alfred Molina's first credited movie roll. The call letters on the seaplane at the beginning of the movie was OB-CPO and images of C-3PO and R2-D2 can be seen among the hieroglyphs on one of the walls of The Well of the Souls. The line "It's not the years, honey, it's the milage" was ad-libbed by Ford. Spielberg and Melissa Matheson, Harrison Ford's wife, wrote the script to E.T. during breaks in the filming.

The fx are Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic (and Lucas sound) same as Star Wars and most fancy fx movies of the very late 70s and throughout the 80s. You can see how much the Ark opening looks like the end of Close Encounters, for instance, and the Ark spirits look like Ghostbusters

    Technically, you didn't hear any Star Wars sound effects. The sound for the film was done by Ben Burtt, who also did the Star Wars films. He went out in the field to acquire all his own sound recordings, instead of using the same stock of sound effects that movies had been using for decades. He actually used many of the recordings he made for Star Wars, but not the actual same sounds. Things were usually altered somewhat, or combined with other sounds he recorded to get the sound he wanted. So, while you didn't hear any Star Wars blasters in Indian Jones, you heard a number of the same elements that were used to make up those effects.

    Somebody wrote something about how this movie is really about Indy finding his own religious faith. In the beginning he teases Marcus about his concerns, saying "You're talking about the bogeyman," indicating that he thinks the Ark is a tremendous historical find, but nothing to do with an actual God. By the end, he's afraid it might be the real deal, so, relying on his knowledge of mythology and religious belief, he tells Marian to shut her eyes, because he knows that they are not allowed to look upon this artifact.
