They definitely didn't want another Marion, so set it a year earlier (Marion's still in Nepal at this point) and have the love interest be completely opposite. Also, Willie does have a character arc during the movie, even punching a thuggee herself in the mine cart! People shouldn't hate Willie for being an "Indoor Girl" - and yes, the fish out of water aspect lends to a lot of great comedy. I never hated Willie, but loved her gumption, growth, and comedy.

    Temple of Doom has gradually become my favorite of the Indy movies. The main reason is because Indy has the best character arc in this film. He starts off as being a selfish guy looking for fortune, then turns into a hero. When he first robs the Sankara stones is when he begins to care about the children. He hears their cries and turns to help. The stones have a positive effect on his character. Great film, great trilogy.

    They dumped the fuel to crash the plane in the movie. However, when a plane knows it's going to crash they try and fine unpopulated areas to do so then dump as much fuel as they can so the plain doesn't become a bomb. You would also dump fuel from an engine to try and put out a fire as well. Oh, also landing weight is lighter than take off weight. If you had to emergency land and needed to be lighter for that emergency landing strip, you'd dump fuel in that situation as well so you wouldn't run out of runway.

  • @michaelw8262

    @michaelw8262

    And just for additional detail, the fuel tanks in a plane are in the wings, so unlike most cars where the gas tank and engine are as far apart as possible, in planes they are usually right next to each other.

    it is actually not true that pilots try to find unpopulated area. they try to find nearest airport, and if that's not possible, nearest flat open field. and pilots dump fuel on residential areas all the time (well, not all the time, but happens more often then you think). for example, Delta Airplane Dumps Jet Fuel on Los Angeles Schools Jan 17, 2020

  • @pen1208

    @@davidjacobs8558 yeah not true as far as dumping fuel "all the time" over people. Not even "often". Only if absolutely necessary. Like your example. It's implied I meant if an airport isn't available. Lol. Open fields aren't populated are they? That's why their called "open" fields. The point is, pilots look for the path of least resistance. Clearly the closest airport, that's implied. If not, then least unpopulated/least populated areas. You can get as specific as wanted once you get lower on the tier.

  • @davidjacobs8558

    @davidjacobs8558

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@pen1208 well, the problem is, most major airports are pretty close to residential areas. for example, LAX. surrounded by residential area, except for the west side, which is pacific ocean. And pilots dump their fuel minutes before they attemp the landing, so it ends up on top of the residential area, as previous case shows. if the airplane is high enough, the fuel will evaporate way before it hits the ground, so usually fuel dumping is not really a problem, even if it was done on residential area.

    So a few fun facts. The old shaman who sends Indy on the quest initially didn't speak any English at all, so Spielberg is actually reading the lines to him off screen and he's repeating what he hears to say them. The buff cultist who Indy fights on the conveyor belt and who winds up getting crushed is the same stunt actor who played the German mechanic fixing the plane in Raiders. He also appears in Last Crusade in a cameo role outside of the zeppelin when it is launching. As far as Universal needing to have a minecart style ride...they're actually making one. As part of the new theme park currently under construction in Orlando, "Epic Universe", a Donkey Kong themed roller coaster is in the works and is designed in such a way as to mimic the game's feature of leaping from track to track in the minecart. It should be open in a few years. Finally the closeup shots of the gators at the end were filmed at Gatorland in Orlando, not far from where Universal is located.

    This is in fact my favorite movie of all time. In a sense, defending Willie, she is just a performer who happened to live this adventure. You can't really blame her. However, towards the end she really warmed up to the adventure as you can see that helped uncuffing the children, shadow boxing along with Indiana, and during the cart part even acting herself. With a character as first-world as her this was very believable. I 100% understand the complains on her but upon rewatching I really like her character a lot. Edit: Funny that you mentioned Zorro 2 at the end, and I totally agree. The child really was my only complain on that movie. Edit2: Since the first movie showed the Arc of the Covenant one can assume that this one featuring Kali and the supernatural elements in this feel very demonic. Which would make sense in a world where the Arc is also a supernatural thing.

    13:22: it was a Prequel and I feel it’s kinda establishing that Indiana was a bit more of a fortune hunter at that point. He wanted “fortune and glory” and was tbh a playboy. That’s my personal rationalization for him being with Willie. But after seeing the power of the stones, he learns to be who he is later in the series (Raiders and Last Crusade). Fun fact too: Steven Spielberg was at a rough patch in his life. Divorce with Amy Irving. George also wasn’t doing well. I have heard that this influenced how they made this film both in how dark it is and in terms of how weird the romance is I notice you guys tend to not like kids in movies in shows. But most of the time I have no problems

    So nothing Jen said about Willie is wrong, but in defense of the character: This is a prequel and we already know that Indy will be single in a year because he's single in Raiders. So the love interest in this movie has to be of a nature that you don't ever ask "What happened to Willie Scott?" They broke up because, ultimately, they weren't compatible and that's obvious from the movie. In order to get around this problem, they made Willie into what's called "The Load." This is a character whose mere presence is a problem for the hero, but whom the hero can't simply abandon (or shoot). She doesn't contribute anything but difficulties and that's supposed to be funny. Once you embrace the idea that you're *supposed* to hate Willie she's a lot more tolerable. I find Willie a funny character in the buttmonkey sense. And I can believe Indy found something he liked about her...body. Also, and this comes out more in the novelization where you get more of Willie's background, she's actually a really smart cookie and tough gal, it's just that she's a character who belongs in a noir detective story who gets caught up in a jungle adventures with cults and is totally out of her element. But in the novel you learn she grew up in a farm in Oklahoma in dire poverty, and clawed her way up into this life of glamour where she's headlining shows is swanky Hong Kong nightclubs, living her dream life, when this complete asshole named Indiana Jones enters her life and completely ruins everything. Like really try to see things from her POV and you realize this movie is like the absolute fucking worst week she'll ever have and it's all Indy's fault. You'd whine too. Also, Short Round is literally the best Kid Sidekick in cinematic history. Kid Sidekicks are almost always horrible and tedious, but Short Round has exactly the right amount of sass and spunk, balanced by some good dramatic scenes that really make it clear he worships Indy. I actually think Willie suffers as a character because they give Short Round so many great scenes.

    The big guy Indy fights is Pat Roach, he actually plays the German mechanic he fights in the first film, as well as the guy who nearly choked him to death in the bar in raiders. There’s also a deleted scene in last crusade where they fought again as Spielberg loved the gag and idea of Indy always fighting a massive tall dude and liked having it be the same actor, as a reference to the old serials.

I was suprised to see Jen take the dinner scene so well, I still remember everyone in my movie theatre flipping out in the 80's (at a time when people watched politely a film, unlike today when people participate in a movie showing). Jen hating on Willie's character was hilarious.

    The reasons that planes are able to dump fuel is for emergency landings. 1) So, if they crash there will be less fuel for possible fires or an explosion. 2) If a plane has to do an emergency landing at an airport closer than their intended destination due to weather or some other issue, they dump the fuel to get rid of the access weight to make the landing easier.

    They were going for a James Bond feel with Indiana Jones at this time. To the point they wanted a different love interest per film. Also, as a note, Temple of Doom is actually a prequel since it's set a year before Raiders. I don't know if it's a consensus, but some did dislike Short Round as much as Willie. So I'm always happy to see positive reception. Temple of Doom tends to be the black sheep of the first three films. Kate Capshaw (Willie) married Steven Spielberg, so at least they can say they got to meet their future spouse during this film. I personally don't hate Willie, but I don't prefer her as his love interest either
