Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny Being Devoid of Logic

Фильм және анимация

A video essay/analysis diving into all the dumb scenes and moments from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. This is almost on the same level as Kingdom and the Crystal Skull for sheer stupidity.

The thing that really gets me is that it's not like you can't show indy running around, beating up nazis and doing all the things he used to do, you just need to show how he is aware his age is catching up on him. Literally all you would need to do is have him find clever ways of getting away that aren't running and fighting and show him getting tired a little more often, it's that simple.

I think this movie suffered from the problem a lot of legacy sequels suffer from: simply doing what the previous films did without realizing WHY they did it. Like with Voller keeping Indy alive. Obviously, Belloq and Donovan also kept Indy alive during the climax, so we have to do that again. But why did they keep him alive? Belloq was an arrogant old rival of Indy's who wanted Indy to see him finally surpass him and Donovan used Indy as a guinea pig to get to the grail. I guess you could argue for Voller doing the same thing as Belloq, but they share so little screentime and they've clearly only ever interacted ONCE in the past that it makes no sense. Indy has been a nuisance for him the entire time. Taking a prisoner who has shown himself to be an escape artist on a PLANE GOING BACK IN TIME is so dumb and clearly just them forcing Indy into the climax.

The whole "Pipe to the head" scenario really baffles me. I was already taken out of the movie by the hanging scene and alltough I enjoyed the opening for the most part, I couldn't suspend my disbelief on this. It would've also been so easy to avoid: The goal of the writers is that Indy hands Voller the artefact, but Voller can't look into the bag while he has the heroes at point blank, because if he did, he would've noticed that Indy tried to trick him. So the metal pipe comes in to knock him of the train. Alright, so I think you could pretty much keep everything from this scene, even the pipe saving the day. But the moment Indy's friend warns him about the pipe, let Voller see it too, panic and jump off the train before the pipe hits him. Same outcome, same scenario, same assets, but his survival would've been far more believable.

I feel so much the opposite. I genuinely don't get half the criticisms for dial of destiny, much less any of this videos nitpicks. Did no one watch the original trilogy? Indy is constantly getting along by sheer dumb luck and taking a beating. He's clever but he's not like- outsmarting people left and right. He's often kidnapped in the films. It's just so baffling how this fifth movie recontextualizes all these Indy movie tropes and builds something new and people still hate it? I don't know.

I have a theory now hear me out if you have seen Dial of Destiny... This line represents time, the back is 213 BC and the far right is 1969 A.D. It turns out that Archimedes had programmed the dial to take them to him all along, thus preventing its usefulness for going to any other era. Remember when they opened the tomb of archimedes? And then there was that watch? I think voller already died, in this turn of events would have looped them in to kill him again. This means Indiana Jones already was in 213 BC. History repeated itself in 213 BC, Archimedes came across that watch of Voller in 213 BC kept it until 1969 when it was recovered by Indiana Jones. Clocks will never have been a thing in a thousand years, and what if that tomb of Archimedes didn't have Archimedes in it. It was Voller's skeleton. But the romans or apprentices didn't want to give away Archimedes true burial place. I believe people who known Archimedes hid his body from grave robbers but before he died he made a tomb and hid the dial from the world inside that tomb and hid Vollers body with it. Somewhere in this point of time, Voller in 1944 found the Dial only for Indy to acquire it that same year on the train to Poland. Later in present 1969, Indy along with Helena Shaw find the tomb of Archimedes which was found in a cave and in those hands of a skeleton was the dial and a watch that Voller had until his death in 213 BC until it was taken by Archimedes and met Indy and at that time when Indy left Archimedes was left with two bodies and a airplane and a watch. So my guess is that he hid Voller's body and assembled the dial before his own death in 212 BC; And he himself was buried in a unmarked grave. Only for the present Voller failing to realize he made a critical mistake in Time Travel and accepting his fate only for it to loop back into 1969. So in other words, Voller became a part of history itself, He wanted to make history but he became History. I noticed it first by seeing the skull on the entombed body. It looked very familiar and then Voller popped up and then I saw he had the same facial structure as the skull. When Voller put on the watch while in the van I started to see where this was going. Archimedes has a completely different structure. The tomb was also designed by Archimedes (one can obviously tell by his fascination of water displacement). Voller was considered a savior for scaring off the Romans so it's not hard to believe he would get a proper burial for his "heroics" and since Archimedes found the (present day)dial next to him and the plane it isn't too far off to think Archimedes would bury half of the (BC) dial, not just to hide it, but also in honor of their savior. The frieze on the sarcophagus also depicted a Phoenix with propellers, which is the plane that Voller came in. So it may not be Archimedes tomb at all, but the tomb of "the man of the Iron Phoenix". Voller has been looking for the dial most of his life. So if this indeed is his tomb then he has had half of the dial for centuries in his own hands without even knowing.

    - 0:16 Yes, the ENTIRE Indiana Jones franchise has ridiculous scenes. It's part of the old pulp era, cliff hanger, desperate moments of how the hell can the hero get out of this scenarios. It's just for fun. Remember, Indiana Jones is supposed to be a comedy/ridiculous situation hero adventure. No more. No less. Only Raiders had most of the movie worthy of all time film-making quality. Raiders considered one of the greats of cinema. That bomb scene hanging is directly from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Look up the scene from that movie. Same set up, and instead of a bomber planes bomb, it's a canon ball fired from an artillery gun. - 1:03 Yep, you're right on that one. Not one of the officers getting into the staff car notices a body on the ground right outside the vehicle. Mangold should've just had him do this like in an dark alleyway. Side of the building where the officers would come out. Or even show Indy dragging body into an allyway, THEN the officers come out. Mangold effed up that one. - Ok, you're dumb with the motorcycle scene. If you watch Indy movies he has the luck of the gods. And if you watch many action movies, especially modern ones, they ALL have this. Pay attention to pulp type writing. Same with the anti-aircraft gun. These aren't gaffs. This is pulp fiction adventure type writing. All action movies have this. Jeez man. Do you think movies DON'T have coincidental moments? - Yes, the gun with the nazi on the train, I agree with you on that. Easily remedied, he pulls out the gun, the tunnel comes up, he has to duck quickly, then drops gun. Mangold again messes up this scene. - Yes again, I agree. Voller getting hit square in the face was stupid. Either show him with a massive scar in 1969. Again, Mangold messed up. BUT, I believe there was some rewrite on this that's why it's so out of place with showing Voller without a big scar. I thought they were going to do the time travel thing, loop time that Voller goes back and survives that hit. I believe they had some rewrites and this first 20 minute action adventure scenes were locked in. Since they cost so much money with the deep-fake on Ford. - The civilian killing is the writers saying, they NEED Voller because of his NASA space program genius. And are willing to overlook it and blame Indy. It shows the CIA are really terrible. Mangold jabbing the government? Not sure. But that's what they're saying. - Yep, the CIA capturing Indy is weak writing. Again, weakly (like the civilian killing writing) saying they need his info on the Dial, since Voller is promising the CIA more advance technology he can mine from this. They don't know he's going to betray them. It needed to be more fleshed out. Weak writing I agree. - No, the police were feed that info from the CIA to frame Indy. They want him to find the location of the Dial so a regular policeman could pick him up. - You don't call cabs back then. It's 1969. No Lyft or Uber. - Yes, getting on the plane, should have shown him getting out of the USA more stealthy. Bad writing. - The Helena boyfriend was meant to be a set up in case people somehow loved Helena's character, they were going to have the continued adventures of Indy with her. They're giving a backstory here. This is Kathleen Kennedy's doing. But one, Helena is NOT an attractive femme-fatale. No one is gonna' see this. And two, no one wants a female Indiana Jones. They only want the original Ford. So bad on Kennedy to have them write this backstory in. - Yes, VERY, TOO LONG chase scene in Morocco. Got boring. I agree. - No, going down the stairs is ridiculous but remember it's a pulp adventure movie. BUT, it's not ridiculous for the Tuk Tuk to keep going after that. They were all made of metal back then. Metal frame etc. They should've shown them crashing into like a laundry stall, lots of heavy clothing to brace them. But not a terrible scene. - It's not unusual for people to open up about big personal things to strangers, etc. It was his moment to let someone hear it. Not a bad scene. Best acted of the movie. - You have to stop the contrived thing in movies. ALL movies have this. - Yes, I agree with the diver but I think the guy choking I think they're saying got shot too underwater? I have to watch again. I thought one of Voller's men shot into the water. - Yep, Mangold blocking is what's the biggest problem in the movie. Spielberg has some of the best blocking of all time. Mangold's set ups aren't very clear storytelling in this flick anyway. - Right with the car again in Italy. - They're saying Indy and Helena knew the area better than Voller. That's not a bad set up. - You forgot the kid didn't know how to swim yet he held his breath that long. If you've never swam, that long in the water, that kid might've drowned on needed some mouth to mouth with water in his lungs if he got to shore. - Right, they should've switched Helena kidnapped instead of Indy. Like they need Helena to decipher more. - Yes, the kid knowing how to fly is not done well. They tried to make it like he's Shortround knowing how to drive. Alot easier to drive than fly,/takeoff especially in the rain. They tried to show it in the auction with him learning on a table top being coached by a drunk pilot at the bar. - The Bomber alot bigger target PLUS they said it was the dragon. So the Romans targeted that plane the most. - In the storyline, he's supposed to be 70 years old. Not 80. Just an FYI. Real life Ford is 80+. Indy here was born in 1899.

It's completely fine to use science fiction and fantasy elements in your story that follow the internal logic that the film establishes. Although I wouldn't classify a refrigerator as one of those things lol. Time travel existing is fine. That was never an issue I really brought up that much and if anything I said I enjoyed that section of the movie the most. The only things I critiqued were their explanation of the time travel mechanic being shoddy and they kind of created a paradox (as most time travel movies do). They also could have easily fixed the paradox by having Archimedes already be done with the Antikythera so that him seeing it finished and functional wouldn't influence him. But again, those weren't major issues as I mostly brushed them off in the video.

I was surprised to see you say the time travel ending makes sense. It makes the least sense of anything in the movie. What was Archimedes plan? They say something about him wanting help. What help? They're at war. What is a time traveller coming in through a hole in the sky going to do? And what was the deal with the whole "continental drift" thing? Indy says Voller got his math wrong. It doesn't seem that way, since Helena says the dial was a false deck that was always going to lead them back to Archimedes no matter what. If they got their math wrong shouldn't they have ended up at some other time period, in that case, rather than exactly where Archimedes intended? Which is it? Did they get their math wrong and that's why they end up in Ancient Greece, or did Archimedes rig the dial? And if it's the former, how is it the case that Archimedes built the dial to "get help"? Did he anticipate that two thousand years later some nazis would be bad at math? Also, continental drift is slow. Over the past two thousand years Greece has moved about the length of an Olympic swimming pool. I mean they never bother to explain how the dial works so maybe that's enough to be the difference between going to WW2 or the Battle of Syracuse, but it sure doesn't feel well thought out to me. This script is absolute gibberish. It's like they never bothered to figure this stuff out, and the result is a climax that feels empty because it has no internal logic. Terrible screenwriting.

Yeah I have the same doubt of how the dial works, did they ended up there because of a wrong calculation or because Archimedes wanted it that way no matter what, making the continental drift commentary pointless?

There's something about Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny that feels like every idea is overcooked from too many writers and too many rewrites. Remember that subplot in Crystal Skull where Indy was suspected of being a communist? Or that FBI dude in DoD who was walking on crutches? What was all that about? Both these movies feel like they're stitched together with compromises that never got to actually be developed properly, so what you're left with is this unsatisfying mess of "a little bit of everything" from each incarnation of the script to keep all of the producers happy.

People seem to really romance the last 30 minutes of the Raiders. The Germans steal the ark and take Marion for the second or third time, while Indy hops a ride on the outside of a submarine that never goes below the surface for 100s of miles, is then captured with clearly an empty threat, and is cuffed to a light post, closing his eyes as ghosts do the work.

Sigh. Do I really need to say it? Okay. It's really pretty simple. Indiana Jones movies (ALL of them) are PULP ADVENTURE FILMS in the PULP ADVENTURE TRADITION. The improbability of their set pieces, escapes, and premises are a conservative 90% of their charm. Oh, and read this quickly, because the KZread algorithm will drive it straight down the rankings almost immediately because it sounds vaguely negative or dismissive.

I'm onna say it: this movie could have been amazing, and you wouldn't even have changed anything about the story. Just replace phoebe with short-round and that kid with marion, and it would've been a gold mine.. this chinese boy comes to class, answers all of indy's questions. He thinks a bit strange like he knows him somehow. Cut to the bar scene he's like: you look familiar, have I met you before? Shorty's like: dr. Jones it's me.. what short-round? Now short-round steals the dial of indy because he came in dept to voller, did not know what to do, so he painfully betrays his old friend. Because indy cares about him he goes after shorty, try and help him out. At the auction he bumps into marion who took a liking to the boy. They have a difficult scuffeling because the loss of their son and don't know how to handle it. In the end short-round helps them both back on their feet.. Just imagine how the audience would cheer if it was short-round going after the plane on the bike to save indy..

Whatever fault the movie had, the logic of the time travel was pretty solid. If you accept Time Fissures as possible. The 2 anachronisms you find at Archimedes's tomb are explained in the end. I have no idea if the continental drift was known 2,000 years ago, but if not, it's a good reason for calculation going off.

Antikythera is an island in Greece. The ancient computer found in the waters off of Antikythera is the Antikythera Mechanism. It is called a mechanism because up until about the last 10 years, it was unclear what it helped calculate and certainly how it did so. It should be referred to as "the mechanism" not the island, you wouldn't refer to the atom bomb as "the manhattan". It is not that much of a coincidence divers would know where the mechanism was found because it was very well known that most the of Greece's ancient national treasures were found there in 1900. If you ever visit the Parthenon museum, these statues are what you will be looking at.

14:13 I mean, that was a classic shot of Indy attacking someone too big for him - like the mechanic in 'Raiders' 'How did tutktuk survive' - and how did a lifeboat survive fall from the plane, sliding rocky terrain towards the cliff and could still be used on water (back in Indy2) ? Indy reparining the tutktuk gave it a step towards realism. 16:43 - again - stealing the car in 'Last Crusade' would have the same issue. 16:57 because Teddy heard the clues, that's why he's useful to them - and he did help them - that's how they know to look for the cave. Btw, extra ponits for the dialogue with Archimedes - he and Indy used ancient Greek, while Helena joined the conversation in New Greek (a totally different form of the language) hence Archimedes' baffled look in here (22:46) I have to say, I really enjoyed the movie.

A big missed chance. Goddamn. Ths thing is actually that the movie its not bad by any mean. Obviously would be perfect by taking helena out. Having dynamics with the kid, making him more likable, Banderas if not the villain could be in it as the second sidekick that dies along with sallah on hid last adventure(surviving, duh), indy being a smart ass feeling young but taking his age seriously. The bad guys having more scenes with indy, building that tension for the final fist fight on the beach where they landed before soldiers and spears get to them (making a tense fight with stakes) Marion and freaking shia coming at the end to the hospital for indy being a family again and finally making indy accept his retirement, ,(a meaning, a redemption, an emotion!!!!) Is that so fucking hard? (That's what she said)

  • @The_Curious_Cat

As much as I enjoyed the movie (much more then the Crystal Skull one), this one has some serious weird scenes that make no sense... Indy getting into the car in the beginning and getting the driver out was a really "wtf" considering there was Nazis all over the place. And then when he decides to change course, the officers on the back seat just scream? They usually carry side arms and if not, they know how to punch and choke someone from behind lol. Instead they just shout letting Indy do whatever he wants. And the scene where they show his face on national television, as a wanted man, goes nowhere. It's pointless. It has zero impact on the story. He can go to the airport, board a plane, go to some other country with zero police chasing him. Indy doesn't even care that he's showing his face everywhere, even after seeing that he's a wanted man. Yes back then everything was more relaxed, but still. They would be on alert at the airport for wanted people. They would have some cooperation with other countries police to know where Indy might be. They might not find him, but they would search for him. But again, the scene is pointless because nothing happens, no consequence on Indy or the story from him being wanted for murder.

Dissapointing end of this franchise. I had the impression, that i had seen every scene before in one of the other Indy movies. So many scenes to feature Indiana Jones, but not really nescessary to help the plot. Well, Ford would have been crazy to deny the money. But i noticed a good thing too: i liked Gimli's cameo appearance.
