Indian Street Food "Chaat" Basics for Foreigners
If you want to eat authentic Indian street food then you need to know what "Chaat" is! Chaatwalas (savoury snack sellers) line the streets in India serving all sorts of different spicy, sour, and sweet snacks which are known as Chaat, Chat, or in Hindi चाट. I'll explain exactly what it is while we eat Dahi Puri, Palak Patta Chaat, and Tamatar Chaat at two famous restaurants in the home of Chaat - Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
When it comes to whether it's safe to eat at these restaurants for foreigners, I think it's safe. It's much safer than eating from a street food cart. Water is the real sure-fire Delhi Belly ingredient and none of the dishes we ate have water - only yoghurt. So don't order Pani Puri (spicy water-filled shells) unless you know the water is clean!
If you're really worried, you can eat Chaat and other Indian street foods at Halidrams or Bikanerwala which are very clean Indian restaurant chains across North India. Their chaat is a little watered down in taste, that's all. But it's still yummy there, and I usually eat there.

On the first of my four trips to India I fell in love with Chaats. The perfect street food for travellers. Not too heavy or spicy and the flavour combinations are out of this world. And of course there is the street theatre of the hawker. Most chaats involve a large number of ingredients. Thanks for this video

I agree with you about Chaat. My coworkers sold it like Indian Rice Krispies and I loved it.
I love making different Indian food at home. I got a few recipes from the local Indian immigrants in my town, and now I can make pretty good Masala over rice
You guys should totally set up food tours of UP, Gujarat, Delhi, etc. I know there are other ones but I feel like I'm getting the Rock-recommendation from you. I've never been to UP or Gujarat but if I ever do go (once COVID is done) I'd totally be up for trying them out! 🤤
I was completely drooling after the end pf the video.
There is a small restaurant called Mumbai Chaat in Auckland', not sure if you tried them during your last visit. My son in law is from Ludhiana and he introduced me to the samosa chaat at a diwali festival here in Auckland and then we found Mumbai Chaat in Sandringham. I loved experiencing the explosion of flavours in my mouth - super delicious! I love you and your wifes work - Simply Beautiful :) - Lots of love from New Zealand

I had Paani Puri for the first time from a food truck in Christchurch a couple of years ago. Because I love good food, especially Indian food I had only heard of it and was curious. It was as if I had known this taste from another time. It was an explosion of flavours and crunch and soft and tamarind sour and mint chutney sweet, and every bite slightly different, depending what mixture of sauces had landed on it. Chaat is life! Kia Ora from New Zealand, I'm off to my local Indian market to buy some tamarind to make chutney/chaatni(?)!
Love from Varanasi
