INDIAN SCOUT TALLER SUSPENSION

This video discusses adding longer shocks to the back of an Indian Scout and matching change for the front forks. With these changes, dragging in the corners is eliminated.

Clever bloke. You need to patent this front fork suspension air ride system and market it. Thanks for the vid. Good job

One additional note, any local machine shop could make the custom bolts and fork caps for a nominal fee.

Finally. I love Scout's styling, motor and size to death, but here, where I live (Ukraine) suspension just doesn't work. Back-end is very harsh and bottoms out at bumps in corners, that forces to loose traction and will to ride. I also found that front fork was too soft for my task (or size ;-) so I passed the deal and didn't buy it. I just dreamed it to have just a inch more travel front and back. Very clever solution.

Genius idea! Thanks for sharing 👍 I'm going to have to do this. Can I remove the stock caps and drill and tap straight down from the top?

Thank you! On 2018 and later you can not drill straight down from the top. There is a rod from the suspension cartridge that threads into the cap in the center. Good luck!

Great info. Considering picking up a used scout rogue when pandemic prices come down and I wanted more travel for a better ride and better ground clearance. I'm thinking of going with heavier progressive springs in front then reducing the fork oil level and going to a 0w oil. I reduce oil level by ~ 2 oz in each fork on my 2012 NC700X and wow the improvement in softness of the ride is amazing. Would be glad to go to a local machine shop for the bolts. Also, what about using a sleeve bearing go to from 12mm ID to 1/2" OD?

Thanks for writing. Yes, there are many ways to skin the front fork. I used to race motocross and do observed trials, so have tried most of them. Good luck with that. I checked out sleeves early on, but sleeves are problematic. 1/2" is 0.500" while 12mm is 0.4724" which means the wall of a sleeve would be 0.0138", less than a 1/64th of an inch wall thickness. Which is why I made bolts. Even if a sleeve with that thin of a wall could be made, suspension forces would hammer it out. Bolts are easy.

So smart. Actually had forgotten about the air cap trick, did that 30 yrs ago on a dirt bike fork. Lot of bikes could use that hack!

Great video. The box in the video shows that you purchased the 12 inch shock version from Drag Specialities and not the 12.5 inch shock from them. In the video you mentioned looking for a 12.5 inch shock. Why is that? Thanks in advance for your help.

The shock I purchased is adjustable in length. The shortest length is 12", and I found 12 3/8" length was the longest I could run without forcing the swing arm down into the frame. A 12/5" shock would work, but it would cause the swing arm to just barely contact the frame when the motorcycle is sitting by itself, no rider.

Me again… I was thinking that instead of making new bolts, I would swap out the bushings for some 12mm inner diameter ones… Would you pls be so kind as to tell me the width of the upper and lower bushing as they are different. Then I will try to locate some before I purchase the shocks. Much obliged.

For the rear, have you seen the K-tech Razors for the scout? Adjustable length and fit for the scout. Dunno if this would've worked. Also, I'm looking at other front fork suspension options to increase ride height as well. Glad to know someone made a video about INCREASING ride height instead of all the forum posts about trying to lower the bike even further to the ground. As a young newbie to motorcycles I've always scanned around to see what mods looked neat and bookmarked them, but one question I tried to find a consensus on is what happens if you put a "rear" tire up front, even if the rear tire up front would match the front rim. I see conflicting answers going from how your bike will catastrophically fail and kill you in a blaze of glory, to guys posting pics of their bikes with a rear tire up front with decent wear after thousands of miles of use and them saying there's no problem at all.

Thank you! K-Tech is clearly out of my budget. I have no ideas about changing tire size on the front. But after 60 years of making things and modifying things, I have found that most of the nay-sayers have no actual relevant experience, and I mostly ignore them. Half the things I make work are poo-pooed by those that have no experience. Do your research, make your decision carefully, and be happy!
