I'm from India and I can see that this happened somewhere in north india where a lot of people are not very educated, arrogant and not well behaved. But im sure this is not the case if he travels towards the south or to places like kashmir. Even in the north there are many nice people, but the chances of you meeting a complete bigot like these is very high. One of the reasons that these people are so arrogant to people of dark skin is that the indian society has something called caste system (among hindu community) where you are looked down upon by which caste you belong to. Usually the people who are from lower caste are dark skinned and always ill treated.

If you are from India then you would know that Jati rankings aren't related to one's complexion. And that darker hued Indians (in the south) tend to be the richest and highest performing Indians. The supposed "low caste" (I don't agree with the concept of lower and higher) tend to be lighter hued and live in places such as Punjab in the north.

This is the reason for significant varna mobility and fluidity across time. "Caste" was an English word that was created and imposed on the east. Many different things were thrown into it. Including varna, jati, gotra, guilds, alumni associations, genders (there are many traditional genders), religions (there are tens of thousands of religions) Tribe would have been a better word than "caste" for "Jati".

As an Indian I feel ashamed & humiliated. It is true that our light skinned Northerners have an aversion towards dark skinned southerners this may be because of being ruled by fair skinned invaders in the past. The government should take strict action on such behaviour especially while interacting with foreigners.

Here in the west they act the same for me at this point. Whenever I see these people my heart shuts down and I am a very loving person.
