INDIAN MADE SMITHS SPEEDOMETER (From ebay)

Ойын-сауық

I bought this as a temporary measure while I'm getting my pre war Smiths Chronometric serviced. I wanted a functioning speedo that didn't look too out of place on my 80 year old bike, and this looks the part, and was also the cheapest speedo of any type on ebay, at only £14.99. Now I know full well that you get what you pay for, and this isn't for the long term, but it will be interesting to see just how long it takes to shake it to death on my old Ariel single. I wont post a link to the ebay seller because there are dozens of them, mostly in India, but a few Indian traders have stocks in the UK for immediate shipping. UPDATE.....On testing this using the correct 2-1 ratio drive gearbox, it reads 40mph when I'm doing 30mph and the oddometer has added an extra mile to a 4 mile round trip. Hitchcock also sell this same speedometer at 4 times the price, and claim no responsibility for any innacuracy. This probably means they know they are crap but are happy to sell them anyway. These are obviously not Chronometric and are just a cheap magnetic drive, but the magnets are all magnetised to a different strength, so every unit will read a different speed, some are close enough, while others are wildly inaccurate.

Thanks for posting this. I have had a little experience of these Indian made instruments. I fitted a historic single seat racing car with a rev counter made out in India and costing £15.00 Ten years later, it was still working perfectly and accurate to +/- about 50 rpm. You do get what you pay for but these things are a modestly priced pretty good alternative to the genuine Smiths item.

Amazing. The only things that are really cheap and sometimes even (mind bogglingly) of better quality are the Soviet made things. Some are rubbish but if it was for military they can be wonderful things and made in large numbers.

I'm still waiting for the drive cable to arrive. But I'll post up a video with it next to my gps to compare the accuracy 👍 UPDATE..... Yes it's crap. Very innacurate at most speeds and the needle is very slow to return to zero. At an indicated 40mph it is actually 30mph when side by side with a gps speedo.

Maybe you should mention that the Indian made one isn't a chronometric, but a cheap magnetic one. Most of them will not make the first year of service...

The seller sites all say these are replicas and for £15 nobody would think these were Chronometric, but yes the magnets are very badly magnetised and every single instrument records different speeds, and they do fall to pieces very quickly.

They also do one with a dial/needle that replicates 1950's smiths chronometric , fitted one to my Royal Enfield superstar , looked nice and visually same as chronometric on my Matchless G3ls (obviously not chronometric but looks the part ) . Matchless is chronometric
