She was something of an inspiration to me, in England, in the 1970s.
For a bit of context: The footage shown is from 1977. In 1977, the fastest supercomputer was Cray-1, which could perform over a hundred million calculations per second. According to Moore's Law, the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles every two years, which means that computers have become exponentially faster. Today, your smartphone can perform billions of calculations per second. The Fugaku supercomputer in Japan, the current fastest supercomputer in the world, can perform over 400 quadrillion calculations per second. Still, none of these come even within one tenth of one percent of the sheer magnitude of the computation speed of Shakuntala Devi.
Great video! Love Mathematics and Sakuntala Devi! Love from India Toby!

I'll be honest, with population of 1 billion people there are probably so many people with intelligence/raw talent like her, but they can't pursue it, cuz most of the time this is not rewarding in our weird education system, competitive exams (which are mostly just about competition) or they're just not economically rewarding.... Probably the saddest part about our education system
Love from I🙄ndia for making such awesome videos I have watched every video of you and I loved every of them 😘❤️
Fantastic, Toby, excellent! ... thank you. She developed highly advanced methods to simplify arithmetic ... she has genesis levels of pattern matching ability to develop these! FYI, I heard of someone in the 1900s who could multiple 2 100 digit plus numbers in his head. Two incredible feats here... first, to remember the first two 100 plus digit numbers in his head, second to multiple them in his head! I believe they randomly read those two numbers to him once and then he multiplied them. His ability to do this decreased over time ... he was the strongest at this in his late teens to mid 20s. Toff looked lovely !!!
Thanks for this video
Amazing, some people are really just that smart. I deal with numbers at work all the time but not in accounting and yes, I still use a calculator if I need to. I think trying to add, multiply etc numbers in your head is good to keep the mind sharp.
I loved the part about birthdays and subtracting 7! Is it like a way of making stuff into base 7?. It feels like a level in a programming game like exa punks or somethings so cool.

the calendar is well defined system of counting. it makes 100% sense that one could apply some rules or be able to figure out a system for counting backward and forwards within this system of numbers.
That's so lovely ❤️🙏
I love your channel! I would love to see you featured on the Numberphile channel, that would be amazing
A fellow schoolmate at my old secondary school could do this instantly. He used to sit in front of me in arithmetic class. He would lean back on the back two legs of his seat... and I would ask him a question, that he would then immediately give the correct answer to. We couldn’t get a pupil with a calculator to do it any faster. When I had Facebook and Twitter accounts I wrote about this. This was about two or three years ago. These amazing classroom multiplications took place thirty five years ago. * * * Interconnections of life, each encouraging the other, are indeed truly brilliant. God bless

at you end, you mention that some criticize her for not being a mathematician. i completely agree with you, Tobi (sp?). she has *every* trait of a mathematician, and i find it sad that people are blind to recognize people for what they really really are. but this is sadly very common among us humans to put too restrictive a 'definition' on something like what is a true mathematician. i think you said it so well, why she is truly a mathematician. so true!
